IndyCar driver Josef Newgarden crashed into Louis Foster, causing his own car to flip and land upside down before sliding down the track in a dramatic "shower of sparks."
The incident occurred after Foster lost control of his car and came into Newgarden's path during the Bommarito Automotive Group 500 at World Wide Technology (WTT) Raceway in Madison, Illinois.
Footage from FOX IndyCar's broadcast shows how the halo saved Newgarden when the car slid down the road in an inverted position. The incident occurred when Foster lost control of his car and made contact with the wall, spinning out and coming down the track. Unfortunately, it was too late for Newgarden to avoid him due to a lack of space.

Both drivers received immediate assistance from the safety officials and were taken to the medical center. After he was released from the infield care center, Foster addressed the incident and Newgarden's condition. He said:
Josef Newgarden, driver of the #2 Shell Powering Progress Team Penske Chevrolet, looks on during practice prior to the 109th running of the Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on May 19, 2025 in Indianapolis,...
Josef Newgarden, driver of the #2 Shell Powering Progress Team Penske Chevrolet, looks on during practice prior to the 109th running of the Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway on May 19, 2025 in Indianapolis, Indiana. More"I got a bit of a wiggle ... got a bit too high and went into the marbles," Foster said. "I just couldn't stop the car from spinning and, obviously, a pretty scary impact with myself and Josef. I'm glad he is OK."
Newsweek Sports reported another dramatic crash involving Foster from early this month in Detroit. Foster suffered from a front right suspension failure on the fastest section of the circuit, leading him to lose control of his car and clip the barrier.
Unfortunately, the momentum meant he went straight into Felix Rosenqvist before sliding down the escape road. Rosenqvist's car was sent into the tire wall with significant force.
Foster released a statement on social media after the crash. He said:
"Firstly thank you to everyone for all the messages, I am ok. I've talked to Felix and I'm also very happy that he is ok. Massive thank you to the IndyCar medical team and IndyCar as a whole for continuing to put driver safety first.
"To explain what happened: on lap 83, approaching T3 at 180mph, my front right suspension failed. This was by far the biggest and scariest crash I've had in my career. I'm very thankful to be able to get out under my own power.
"We believe it was caused by a bolt failure on the mounting block, but more internal investigation is required to be sure.
"Biggest bummer is that we were on for our season best result, and we led multiple laps, up the front on our strategy. But this is racing, sometimes it doesn't love you back. See you all in two weeks."

Brickyard 400 sees slight attendance dip. Will NASCAR race return to IMS oval? What we know

INDIANAPOLIS — Unsurprisingly, ticket sales for Sunday's Brickyard 400 were down a couple thousand from NASCAR's event at Indianapolis Motor Speedway the year prior. An approximation from just over 70,000 in 2024 to just under 70,000 fans attended Sunday, according to an IMS spokesperson. Down on pit lane in the moments after Sunday's race won by Bubba Wallace that featured a pair of overtimes where the 23XI Racing driver was forced to fend off reigning race-winner Kyle Larson, IMS and IndyCar president Doug Boles guesstimated IMS would end up down 5,000 to 6,000 tickets from 2024 and land around 65,000, but he had yet to see the walk-up numbers, which weren't expected to be spectacular, given the intense heat index, coupled with the lingering weather concerns. The dip, though, comes after the monumental return to the oval for NASCAR in 2024 after three years away while simultaneously celebrating the Brickyard 400's 30th anniversary of its first running — a pair of milestones that, while not exactly having 100th Indy 500-level impacts, were believed to have notably helped the track achieve year-over-year growth for race day (when compared to 2019, the last year NASCAR ran on the oval with fans) for the first time since 2002. Last year's race topped 2018's Brickyard 400 attendance numbers, too, and approached — but didn't nearly reach — 2017 and 2016. In the vein of its approach to the post-2016 Indy 500 era of the Greatest Spectacle in Racing, Boles spoke last year of wanting to keep a significant amount of 'lift' from 2024 to 2025 and then use the latter as a foundation off of which to build from moving forward. He said Sunday he doesn't expect the race to be on anything but the oval track in 2026. 'We just have to keep building it,' he said, hence why it was so important to make a pair of cross-country commercial flights in the span of 36 hours in order to wear both of his hats this weekend. 'From an IndyCar standpoint, I think it just shows that I'm serious about it. By not going, it would have left some doubt, and (the Brickyard 400) is one of our two massive events we have (at IMS). 'I just felt like I needed to be here. NASCAR's been such an awesome partner of ours, so I just wanted to try and manage through both of those.'

Tiger Woods' Son Charlie Passing Up Title Defense For Bigger Stage

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Tiger Woods' son, Charlie, had little time to recover from the bruises he sustained at the US Junior Amateur. Just a week after missing the cut in Dallas, the younger Woods is back in another top-rated event. Curiously, Charlie Woods should have been defending his title in the South Florida PGA Junior Cup, the 2025 edition of which starts this Monday. However, the youngest son of the 18-time major winner will not be present at that tournament. The reason for his absence? Charlie is in Indiana to play in the Junior PGA Championship, beginning Tuesday at the Purdue University golf facilities. This is one of the premier junior golf events in the country, featuring tournaments for boys and girls simultaneously. Charlie Woods of the United States hits a tee shot on the fourth hole during the second round of the U.S. Junior Amateur at Trinity Forest Golf Club on July 22, 2025 in Dallas, Texas. Charlie Woods of the United States hits a tee shot on the fourth hole during the second round of the U.S. Junior Amateur at Trinity Forest Golf Club on July 22, 2025 in Dallas, will be Charlie's first appearance in this event, where his legendary father finished runner-up once during his illustrious junior golf career. The boys' Junior PGA Championship tournament will be played on Purdue University's Ackerman-Allen Course. The field features 156 players, including top-ranked golfers Miles Russell and Luke Colton. Recent US Junior Amateur champion Hamilton Coleman will not be present. The tournament will have a stroke-play format, similar to most professional events. The top 60 players plus ties will make the cut after 36 holes and play the final two rounds to determine the champion. A year ago, Baylor Larrabee won the event at the Congressional Country Club. He is currently on the UCLA golf team and cannot defend his title at Purdue because he is no longer age eligible. Junior PGA Championship Week The best junior golfers in the world have arrived @PurdueGolf to test their games on our 2 home courses. — Purdue W Golf (@PurdueWGolf) July 28, 2025 The girls' event will be played simultaneously on Purdue University's Kampen-Cosler Course. It will feature the same characteristics as the boys' tournament, and the No. 2-ranked player in the country, Asterisk Talley, leads the field. Charlie missed the cut in the US Junior Amateur after carding a terrible first-round 81 at Brook Hollow Golf Club. A day later, he improved significantly and carded a 74 at Trinity Forest, but his fate was already sealed, and he couldn't advance beyond the stroke-play phase. Just over a month earlier, he won his first American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) tournament, the Team TaylorMade Invitational. Is it going to be one of weekends? As much as I'd love for the championship fight to get tighter, Palou has exceled here. He didn't run away and hide a year ago, but he was clearly the best car from the jump. This year, Palou has won four of the five natural-terrain road-course races — and in the one he didn't (Mid-Ohio), his small silly mistake cost him the win. We haven't gotten a true Alex Palou beatdown of a weekend since the spring, and it feels like we're due. How will Team Penske fare this weekend? I certainly don't expect a win. I think there's an off-chance we get a podium from either Scott McLaughlin or Will Power. I still think we could get a Penske win before the season ends, but not here. Chip Ganassi Racing has won each of the last three trips to the track, and if I'm making predictions, there's no reason to expect that to change unless something odd happens. The Rookie of the Year race couldn't be tighter. Who has the edge between Louis Foster and Robert Shwartzman? Foster has had a better track record both in qualifying performance and consistency, so in a tie with four races to go, I'll give a slight edge to the Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing rookie, although I think this very much could be alive until the finale — at an oval, where Prema has gotten the bulk of their strong results this year.
