Boston Blue Twist! Blue Bloods Spinoff Recasts a Reagan Family Member (and in Turn Explains Danny's Big Move)
CBS' upcoming Blue Bloods offshoot has added another Reagan — though he will look a bit different when he shows up. A 'universe expansion' of the long-running family/crime drama, Boston Blue (airing Fridays at 10/9c this fall) finds Donnie Wahlberg's Danny Reagan taking a position with the Boston Police Department. There, he is paired with Detective Lena Silver (Star Trek: Discovery's Sonequa Martin-Green), the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family. Mika Amonsen — whose credits include TV's The Republic of Sarah and Hudson and Rex, as well as the 2023 slasher film Thanksgiving — has been cast in the series regular role of Sean Reagan, Danny's youngest son (of two). Sean of course was originally played across all 14 seasons of Blue Bloods by Andrew Terraciano, in what was practically Terraciano's only acting role. In Boston Blue, Sean has relocated to Boston to start his own new chapter, as a patrolman for the Boston PD — thus paving the way for his father's own major move. 'Sean committed himself to pursuing his family's legacy but wanted to do so on his own terms, which meant joining a department outside of his hometown,' the official character description reads. 'Danny's decision to stay in Boston gives this father-and-son duo a chance to reconnect on a deeper level.' The Boston Blue cast also includes Gloria Reuben (ER) as Mae Silver, family matriarch and Boston's District Attorney; Ernie Hudson (NBC's Quantum Leap reboot) as Lena's grandfather, Reverend Peters, a renowned pastor of a historic Baptist church in Boston; Maggie Lawson (Psych) as Boston PD Superintendent Sarah Silver, Lena's 'strong-willed' and 'decisive' stepsister; and Marcus Scribner (black-ish) as Jonah, Lena and Sarah's rookie cop brother. Boston Blue: Donnie Wahlberg Marks ‘A New Chapter' for Blue Bloods' Danny Reagan at First Table Read
Danny Reagan's story is ready to resume. Nearly seven months after CBS' long-running Blue Bloods aired its series finale, franchise vet Donnie Wahlberg RSVP'd for the first table read for Boston Blue, the 'universe expansion' announced back in February. More from TVLine Reasonable Doubt Season 3: Get Fall Premiere Date, First Photos Paramount, President Trump Reach $16 Million Settlement Over 60 Minutes Lawsuit Law & Order Toronto: Criminal Intent Sets Fall Premiere Date on The CW Wahlberg flew into Toronto, Ontario — Boston Blue's production base — the other night, sharing on Instagram, 'A new day. A new city. A new opportunity. A new adventure. The same gratitude.' The morning after, he snapped a pic from the first Boston Blue table read, where he was seated next to leading lady Sonequa Martin-Green (Star Trek: Discovery). 'A new chapter,' he wrote, adding a (Boston?) blue heart emoji. The offshoot's pilot is penned by showrunners Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis, and will be directed by Anthony Hemingway (whose myriad TV credits include Major Crimes, Shameless and Starz's Power Universe). Ordered to series on Feb. 18, Boston Blue finds Wahlberg's Detective Danny Reagan leaving New York City and his family to take a position with the Boston PD. There, he will be partnered with Martin-Green's Detective Lena Silver, the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family. The cast also includes Gloria Reuben (ER) as Mae Silver, family matriarch and Boston's District Attorney; Ernie Hudson (NBC's Quantum Leap reboot) as Lena's grandfather, Reverend Peters, a renowned pastor of a historic Baptist church in Boston; Maggie Lawson (Psych) as Boston PD Superintendent Sarah Silver, Lena's 'strong-willed' and 'decisive' stepsister; and Marcus Scribner (black-ish) as Jonah, Lena and Sarah's rookie cop brother. CBS Drops First Look at 'Blue Bloods' Spinoff 'Boston Blue'
The Blue Bloods spinoff, Boston Blue, is turning out to be one of the most highly anticipated shows of the 2025-2026 television season. Now, CBS is making sure fans get a tease of what is to come this fall. The network revealed on May 7 that the show will air on Friday nights at 10 p.m., following Sheriff Country at 8 p.m. and Fire Country at 9 p.m. It will be an all-Jerry Bruckheimer-produced block of shows. CBS also gave fans a look at what they can expect this fall with a 10-second clip starring Donnie Wahlberg, who reprises his role as Danny Reagan. "Donnie Wahlberg here," he said in the video. "Can't wait for you to see my new series, Boston Blue. Coming CBS fall." The clip shows a scenic look at the Massachusetts state capital and a snippet of Danny back in action but in a new city. It's just enough to hold viewers for a few months ahead of its premiere. The storyline for the series, via CBS, proves that Danny hasn't skipped a beat. "Donnie Wahlberg reprises his role as NYPD veteran Danny Reagan as he joins the Boston PD and partners with Detective Lena Peters (Sonequa Martin-Green), a rising star from a powerful law enforcement family. New city. New partner. Same commitment to justice," the logline reads. Martin-Green's casting was announced on May 7 and she's excited to be back working for CBS after a turn on Star Trek: Discovery as Michael Burnham for Paramount+. 'We love the Reagans. We have all loved the Reagans for so long,' Martin-Green said, via Variety. 'And I feel that we'll love the Peters too. I'm super excited for this partnership, and to be back in a CBS family — and in this family, your family. It means a lot, and I'm grateful for it. I think we're going to have a good time.' More of the cast will likely be revealed in the weeks ahead, but Wahlberg has promised Reagan family cameos already. "Danny's story will continue the Reagan family. You can't have Danny without Reagans — there'll be connective tissue," he confirmed. "But we're also going to get to discover a new family and carry on the tradition of telling their stories.'

Blue Bloods Offshoot Ordered to Series, Sending Donnie Wahlberg's Danny to a New City
CBS on Tuesday afternoon announced a series order for a 'Blue Bloods Universe expansion' starring series vet Donnie Wahlberg. Boston Blue, as the offshoot is tentatively titled, finds Wahlberg's Danny Reagan taking a position with the Boston PD. There, he will be partnered with Detective Lena Peters, the eldest daughter of a prominent law enforcement family. More from TVLine Tracker Solves Gina Picket Case in Midseason Premiere - Grade It CBS' Beyond the Gates Adds Soap Vets Jon Lindstrom and Cady McClain Watson's Morris Chestnut Teases the Good Doctor's Growing Suspicions as Season 1 Returns: 'He's Going to Question Shinwell Quite a Bit' - Watch The series is on track to debut during the 2025-26 TV season. Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis (both of The Blacklist and L.A.'s Finest, as well as Alert: MPU) will serve as showrunners and executive-produce alongside Wahlberg, Jerry Bruckheimer and KristieAnne Reed. According to Deadline, which first reported on Boston Blue, the series was not conceived as a Blue Bloods spin-off; the only offshoot pitched to be led by Wahlberg would have transplanted Danny in Texas. Rather, Sonnier and Margolis had developed a series that would follow a family of police officers in Boston whose eldest daughter is partnered with a new transfer from LAPD. The NYPD's Danny is now that transfer. CBS' Blue Bloods series finale averaged 6.7 million total viewers (according to VideoAmp Overnight data), which marked a Season 14 high for the family/cop drama (including the 10 episodes that aired February through May). The series' swan song wound up amassing a 35-day multi-platform audience of 11 million. Blue Bloods' fall run averaged 7.9 million total viewers (with Live+7 playback), down 15% from Season 14A but still good enough to rank No. 4 out of the broadcast dramas that aired this TV season.
