Yankees' Cody Bellinger for Mets' Mark Vientos Trade Floated as 'Deal to Be Had'
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. The New York Yankees won their series against the Atlanta Braves with a victory on Sunday, but some of their biggest concerns going into the All-Star break seem to be lingering. Primarily, the Yankees fell victim to some poor base running in the series when Jorbit Vivas was thrown out by Braves outfielder Ronald Acuna in a highlight throw that propelled a harsh loss for the Bombers on Friday. The Yankees have been urged to land an upgrade for Vivas at the trade deadline, and that play has only strengthened calls for a new infielder. And as the Yankees canvas their options for an external addition, The Athletic's Jim Bowden has floated an interesting trade idea that would involve the New York Mets. "Maybe there's even a deal to be had with the crosstown Mets, who could offer Mark Vientos for Jasson Dominguez or Cody Bellinger or perhaps Brett Baty for Trent Grisham," Bowden wrote. "There just aren't a lot of sellers at this trade deadline, so GMs will have to get creative; GM Brian Cashman has a long track record of doing that." (Photo) More Elsa/Getty If Cashman really does want to get creative in a deal with the Mets, a trade that would swap Bellinger for Vientos could be the most intriguing option floated by Bowden. Bellinger has been excellent for the Yankees since joining via trade this past winter, but he has a $25 million player option for next year and could be preparing to opt out. Meanwhile, Vientos seems to have taken a step back for the Mets this season but enjoyed a strong campaign at third base last year and has another year of pre-arbitration ahead. If the Yankees feel like he can be their third base solution for years to come and the Mets are looking for more of a win-now upgrade in the outfield, a startling crosstown trade like this could ultimately make sense for both sides. Phillies Trade Idea Sends Two Top-Ten Prospects For Cardinals' Ryan Helsley
Phillies Trade Idea Sends Two Top-Ten Prospects For Cardinals' Ryan Helsley originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Philadelphia Phillies need bullpen help, badly. With Jordan Romano being a massive disappointment this season, the team needs to add another reliever, especially a righty. Advertisement There might be a solid option at this year's MLB trade deadline. According to Jim Bowden of The Athletic, a trade idea for the Phillies could land St. Louis Cardinals All-Star closer Ryan Helsley for two prospects. "He's in his free-agent walk year, and the Cardinals are still within striking distance." Bowden writes. "A reasonable return in a trade with the Phillies could be second baseman Aroon Escobar and outfielder Griffin Burkholder." Helsley is in the final year of his deal and will be a free agent after this season. If the Phillies trade for him, it'd just be for the remainder of the year, just like what they did with Carlos Esteves a year ago. While they'd only get half a season out of him, Helsley would be a nice addition to the bullpen. This season, he has a 3.19 ERA in 31 innings pitched, with 18 saves, 35 strikeouts, and 13 walks. Advertisement Philadelphia Phillies manager Rob Thomson (59) celebrates a run scored in the first inning against the Colorado Rockies at Coors Chenoy-Imagn Images He's allowed a WHIP of 1.387, the second highest of his MLB career thus far, but he's still a solid reliever and would be a significant upgrade over Romano, who has a 7.44 ERA this season. The two players the Phillies are trading are both top ten prospects. Escobar is the sixth-ranked prospect in the organization, and recently, made his debut in the MLB top 100 prospects. He's been a steady riser in the Phillies' farm system, and the 20-year-old could be a significant piece in a deal, like this proposed one from Bowden. Burkholder, meanwhile, is a 19-year-old who was drafted in 2024 by the Phillies and has a .734 OPS in the minor leagues this season. Advertisement Both are valuable prospects, and losing both would sting. But the return, two-time All-Star Ryan Helsley, would be a huge addition to the bullpen. He'd help the Phillies make a World Series push and resolve the team's Romano issues. This trade idea from Bowden would have the Phillies landing an All-Star closer while sending away two young prospects who have a lot of potential. It'd sting to lose both, but the addition of Helsley could make up for it. MLB Pundit Believes Phillies Could Acquire $81 Million Cardinals Pitcher For This Return
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Philadelphia Phillies are keeping every option open on the table when it comes to adding relievers. One of those options is St. Louis Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley. Helsley has been a player whose name has been thrown around for several months since the season began. Now, MLB insider and former general manager Jim Bowden thinks the Cardinals could send him to Philadelphia. ST LOUIS, MISSOURI - JULY 8: Ryan Helsley #56 of the St. Louis Cardinals pitches against the Washington Nationals in the ninth inning at Busch Stadium on July 8, 2025 in St Louis, Missouri. ST LOUIS, MISSOURI - JULY 8: Ryan Helsley #56 of the St. Louis Cardinals pitches against the Washington Nationals in the ninth inning at Busch Stadium on July 8, 2025 in St Louis, Missouri."Helsley has a 3.30 ERA, a 3.79 FIP and 17 saves in 22 opportunities this season," wrote Bowden. "He's in his free-agent walk year and the Cardinals are still within striking distance." Here is the full trade Bowden predicted: Philadelphia Phillies acquire: RHP Ryan Helsley St. Louis Cardinals acquire: INF Aroon Escobar, OF Griffin Burkholder "MLB Pipeline ranks Escobar and Burkholder sixth and ninth, respectively, in the Phillies' system," added Bowden. Coughing up two top-10 prospects for a rental may seem like a large asking price, but high-end relievers are hard to come by at the deadline. Those who are selling them will certainly raise the price knowing other teams will be desperate and overpay. This would mark the second year in a row that the Phillies have had to go out and bring in a legitimate closer at the trade deadline. The Jordan Romano contract has been nothing but a disaster, and he reverts back to his early-season struggles just when you think he may turn a corner. If the Phillies are serious are pushing for a World Series this year, this is a trade they need to be willing to make when the time comes. Insider reveals Braves trade deadline goals
The Atlanta Braves are likely to be sellers at the trade deadline as the 2025 Major League Baseball season has been a disappointing one for the team. Atlanta is 40-51 and in fourth place in the NL East. With the playoffs unlikely, the Braves will likely be sellers ahead of the trade deadline on July 31. Ahead of the deadline, MLB insider Jim Bowden of The Athletic believes Atlanta needs to try and find their future shortstop at the deadline. Advertisement 'I don't believe the Braves need to be aggressive. However, finding a long-term solution at shortstop and acquiring more young pitching should be the goal,' Bowden wrote. Follow The Sporting News on WhatsApp The Braves' top trade chips are the likes of Chris Sale, Sean Murphy, and Marcell Ozuna. Yet, Bowden believes Atlanta may try to keep some top assets to be competitive next season. 'I think the Braves just need to get their starting pitching healthy for next year and only require a slight reboot at the deadline rather than a transformation,' Bowden added. 'Trading catcher Sean Murphy to open the door full-time for Drake Baldwin makes sense to me, as does dealing soon-to-be free agent Marcell Ozuna. The Braves are going to need Sale next year, so I wouldn't trade him. Of course, the Braves would have to at least listen to offers — in case someone wants to overpay.' Advertisement Atlanta has made the playoffs in seven straight years, but that streak appears to be over as the Braves are expected to be sellers ahead of July 31. Execs ‘overwhelmingly' believe this Red Sox star will be traded at deadline
With the trade deadline four weeks away, the Red Sox are still treading water in no man's land. At 43-45, they took this week's series with the Reds, but blew a three-run lead in the finale to squander a sweep. It's still unknown what path they'll take at the deadline, but according to The Athletic, executives around baseball think Craig Breslow is going to sell some pieces. Advertisement Jim Bowden surveyed more than 40 execs around the game, asking who the best players to be dealt later this month would be. He split the categories into starters, relievers and position players. When it came to relief pitchers, Boston's closer Aroldis Chapman (a likely All-Star) was No. 1 on the list. 'The execs overwhelmingly picked Chapman as the reliever most likely to be traded in July,' Bowden writes. 'He would be a difference-maker in any bullpen.' The 37-year-old closer is in the midst of a renaissance season, posting a 1.29 ERA and 0.771 WHIP. His 2.6 walks per nine innings is a career low, and on Wednesday he picked up his 350th career save, too. He's been lights out. Advertisement As for position players, Jarren Duran came in at No. 6, Wilyer Abreu was No. 10, and Alex Bregman was No. 13. With top prospect Roman Anthony's promotion and Masataka Yoshida rehabbing, the Red Sox have a logjam in their outfield, so it's not a surprise to see Duran and Abreu's names popping up in trade rumors. Bregman was a bit more eyebrow-raising though, especially after the Rafael Devers trade. 'This was another shocking name to me, but some execs believe the Red Sox could move on from Bregman at the trade deadline if they can't extend him by then,' Bowden writes. 'Bregman and his agent, Scott Boras, have told the Red Sox they are open to signing a long-term extension now. But if the two sides can't work out a deal, don't be surprised if Boston trades him to either the Tigers or Mariners at the trade deadline.'
