Yankees' Cody Bellinger for Mets' Mark Vientos Trade Floated as 'Deal to Be Had'
The New York Yankees won their series against the Atlanta Braves with a victory on Sunday, but some of their biggest concerns going into the All-Star break seem to be lingering.
Primarily, the Yankees fell victim to some poor base running in the series when Jorbit Vivas was thrown out by Braves outfielder Ronald Acuna in a highlight throw that propelled a harsh loss for the Bombers on Friday. The Yankees have been urged to land an upgrade for Vivas at the trade deadline, and that play has only strengthened calls for a new infielder.
And as the Yankees canvas their options for an external addition, The Athletic's Jim Bowden has floated an interesting trade idea that would involve the New York Mets.
"Maybe there's even a deal to be had with the crosstown Mets, who could offer Mark Vientos for Jasson Dominguez or Cody Bellinger or perhaps Brett Baty for Trent Grisham," Bowden wrote. "There just aren't a lot of sellers at this trade deadline, so GMs will have to get creative; GM Brian Cashman has a long track record of doing that."

If Cashman really does want to get creative in a deal with the Mets, a trade that would swap Bellinger for Vientos could be the most intriguing option floated by Bowden. Bellinger has been excellent for the Yankees since joining via trade this past winter, but he has a $25 million player option for next year and could be preparing to opt out.
Meanwhile, Vientos seems to have taken a step back for the Mets this season but enjoyed a strong campaign at third base last year and has another year of pre-arbitration ahead.
If the Yankees feel like he can be their third base solution for years to come and the Mets are looking for more of a win-now upgrade in the outfield, a startling crosstown trade like this could ultimately make sense for both sides.

Yankees' Luis Gil allows 5 runs in first rehab start at Triple-A level
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — New York Yankees injured right-hander Luis Gil allowed four hits and five runs in 3 1/3 innings in a rehab start with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Wednesday. Gil allowed a home run to the first batter he faced, outfielder Robert Hassell III, in his outing against Rochester, the Nationals' top minor league team. Gil walked three and struck out four. He threw 67 pitches, 44 strikes. Gil strained a lat in spring training and has not pitched in the majors this season. The 2024 AL Rookie of the Year was 15-7 with a 3.50 ERA with 171 strikeouts in 151 2/3 innings last season. Gil made two rehab outings at Double-A Somerset, one on July 13 and a second July 18, before moving up to Triple-A. There's a possibility his next start comes in the majors. 'Definitely getting there,' New York manager Aaron Boone said Wednesday before the Yankees' game in Toronto. It's been a good build up for him. We get through this one and see where we're at.' ___ AP MLB: The Associated Press

Pete Alonso hits 3-run homer to power Mets to sweep of Angels
Pete Alonso hit a three-run homer to power the New York Mets to a 6-3 win and series sweep of the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday. Alonso, mired in a 2-for-34 slump dating back to July 10, homered two batters after Francisco Lindor broke a career-long 0-for-31 drought with an RBI single. Brandon Nimmo hit his 14th career leadoff homer and Lindor added another RBI single in the fourth for the Mets, who swept a series for the fifth time this season. Sean Manaea (1-1), making his third appearance and second start after battling oblique and elbow injuries, allowed one run and struck out five over five innings. Edwin Díaz got the final four outs for his 21st save. Mike Trout homered in the third — the 396th home run and 999th RBI of his career — for the Angels, who were swept for the seventh time. Luis Rengifo (forceout) and Chris Taylor (double) collected RBIs in the seventh. Left-hander Jake Eder (0-1), the last of three Angels pitchers on a bullpen day, gave up five runs in a career-high six innings. Alonso's first homer since July 8 was the 248th of his career, pulling him within four of Darryl Strawberry for the all-time franchise lead. Trout is aiming to become the second active player with 400 homers and the ninth with 1,000 RBIs. The Mets travel west for a six-game road trip starting Friday, when RHP Clay Holmes (8-5, 3.48 ERA) opens a three-game series against RHP Logan Webb (9-7, 3.08 ERA) and the San Francisco Giants. Angels LHP Yusei Kikuchi (4-6, 3.13 ERA) starts Thursday, when the Angels return home for a four-game series against the Seattle Mariners and RHP Logan Evans (3-3, 3.81 ERA).
