Sakbun announces support of Vigo schools facilities plan
Terre Haute Mayor Brandon Sakbun said Monday he supports the Vigo County School Corp.'s recently announced facilities reorganization plan. The first-term mayor praised it as a smart, data-driven student-focused step toward strengthening both education and the broader community. Sakbun commended the school corporation for its transparent and deliberate leadership, noting the plan has been shaped by thorough community input, data analysis and commitment to student success. 'They've listened to the community, analyzed the data and brought forward a plan that prepares us for the future,' Sakbun said in a news release. The quality of local schools plays a key role in shaping the city's economic development, workforce readiness and long-term growth, Sakbun said. School facilities must match the school corporation's excellence in educators and strong academic programs to meet modern expectations and ensure continued progress, he said. Recognizing this as a broader community responsibility, the mayor stressed that cities across Indiana are grappling with shifts in population, funding structures, and facility needs. 'This plan is strategic, responsible and what our community needs for our students now and in the future,' Sakbun said. 'Like many community members, I had some initial concerns, but I believe they have been thoughtfully addressed. 'The reality is that the school-age population in this community has decreased by almost 50% since the 1970s,' he continued. 'The proposed plan keeps the teacher-to-student ratio the same, adds additional academic and extracurricular programs, and modernizes facilities.' Sakbun, who graduated from Terre Haute South Vigo High School, said, 'While it pains me to see that the school I went to will change, I am excited to welcome new traditions.' The mayor asks residents to view video and information provided by the school district that provides information on funding and how legislation passed in 2009 is still creating challenges. That video can be seen at Sakbun also expressed confidence in Superintendent Chris Himsel and the school board and pledged to support the plan through infrastructure alignment, planning partnerships and public collaboration.

Local officials to host press conference on new homebuyer assistance plan
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)—The City of Terre Haute and other Vigo County officials, in partnership with Thrive West Central, will host a press conference to announce a new initiative to help Hoosier homebuyers. The initiative is being funded by Club 720 and the Hoosier Homes program. It will aim to make it easier to buy a home by making it more affordable and accessible through downpayment assistance, coaching, and other resources. The press conference on the program will be held on June 5 at 10 a.m. at the Thrive West Central – Training Center. City of Terre Haute announces new energy savings program
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV)— The City of Terre Haute has announced the Indiana Energy Saver Program to help low to moderate-income households. This will be a statewide initiative aimed at helping residents reduce their energy costs and upgrade their homes with energy efficiency in mind. The program will be administered by the Indiana Office of Energy Development and will be supported by nearly $182,000,000 in federal funding. One part of the program available to all Indiana households is the Home Efficiency Rebate (HOME). This will offer rebates for whole-home energy efficiency upgrades that achieve at least 20% energy savings. Eligible improvements include insulation, air sealing, ENERGY STAR-certified HVAC systems, water heaters, appliances, and lighting. Households that earn less than 80% of the area median income may even qualify for rebates covering up to 100% of project costs with up to $18,000 in rebates. Another main part of the initiative is the Home Appliance Rebate (HEAR). This program targets low- and moderate-income households that make less than 150% of the area median income. It provides rebates for purchasing and installing energy-efficient appliances and necessary electrical upgrades. Eligible items include heat pump water heaters, heat pump HVAC systems, heat pump clothes dryers, electric stoves, cooktops, ranges, ovens, and electrical system enhancements. Maximum rebates for this program can reach up to $14,000. Homeowners and renters in single-family or multifamily homes are eligible to apply. Those who do must provide proof of income and residency. Households that participate in certain federal assistance programs such as LIHEAP, Medicaid, SNAP, and SSI may automatically qualify. 'This is about more than saving money—it's about dignity, opportunity, and long-term sustainability,' said Mayor Brandon Sakbun. 'The Indiana Office of Energy Development has played a critical role in keeping this funding alive and helping local governments like ours ensure that every eligible household can access it. We're proud to work alongside them to put these resources to work in Terre Haute and beyond.' To apply, residents can click this link and complete the pre-screening process. A representative with the program will then conduct an energy assessment to identify improvements and develop a plan for you. Terre Haute is unveiling a new logo
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — Mayor Brandon Sakbun has announced Terre Haute is unveiling a new logo. This new logo will showcase more city history. Including, local main street monuments and characters. Sakbun said the logo will be implemented in increments, starting digitally and heading toward Terre Haute signage and vehicles. Terre Haute hoists new city flag ' We are lacking in some of those areas. You know, what is a Huatian? Right? What do we have to offer families if they're looking to move here or families if we're trying to get them to stay here? And part of that is a strong public presence, a professional look, and a professional brand and marketing materials, ' said Sakbun. Sakbun said it was time for the city to get a new face. 'We found it kind of internally as a team, the need to get a new logo. The need to get a new kind of face of the city. What does it look like when you see a city vehicle? When you see a city employee? ' said Sakbun. Wabash Valley honors the fallen on Memorial Day
TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTWO/WAWV) – The Wabash Valley honored the fallen Monday as hundreds of residents came out for local Memorial Day events. The ceremonies Monday included the annual service at Highland Lawn Cemetery in Terre Haute. Vigo County veteran organizations were in attendance along with members of the community to honor fallen veterans. 'It is a very difficult day. Taking the time to honor the fallen, celebrate with the families, the service organizations who are here,' said Terre Haute Mayor Brandon Sakbun. The mayor urged local families to experience the history of Memorial Day. 'I encourage, especially our younger families, take your kids out here. Bring them out so that way they see and understand what it means on Memorial Day, what the flags mean,' said Mayor Sakbun. People in attendance reflected on the bravery of the fallen. 'Willing to sacrifice your own life and to those that have, that you've fought alongside and they're no longer here, but yet we're able to continue our lives due to their sacrifice,' said Matthew Harvey, a retired member of the U.S. Army. The community remembered those lost, but never forgotten. 'Don't be afraid to carry the torch for the next generation,' said Harvey.
