Village responds to ‘speed trap' accusations from Columbus

BRICE, Ohio (WCMH) — The Village of Brice responded to accusations from Columbus City Council President Shannon Hardin that the village is acting as a 'speed trap' and putting a strain on the court system. Hardin criticized the village on social media this month over its use of automated traffic cameras to enforce the speed limit. His criticism comes six months after he was ticketed there for speeding. Hardin was ticketed for driving 30 mph in a 20 mph school zone, according to the traffic citation, and was ordered to pay a $236 fine — $111 of that went to court costs, with the village collecting the remaining $125. Groveport Madison school board members sued after appearing at committee meeting Hardin said the village of 93 people is operating as 'little more than a speed trap,' accusing the police department of using its automated cameras like slot machines to collect revenue for the municipality. 'Despite the Village of Brice's modest size, over 7,500 vehicles per day travel through the Brice Road school zone,' the village said in a statement. 'Speeding through our school zone is a voluntary activity, and the citizens of Brice expect their public safety representatives to mitigate and deter the speeding activity.' The village said that the speed limit signs are highly visible, and there are signs that the school zone is photo-enforced. Brice also said its speeding fines are 'relatively modest' compared to other school zone fines in Ohio, but said the Franklin County Municipal Court's fee is almost five times higher than other courts. The village suspended its use of the automated cameras in mid-2021 but resumed the program last fall. Since then, Hardin said the village has taken in nearly half a million dollars in speeding fines, something he said is putting a disproportionate burden on the Franklin County Municipal Court. Lori Tyack, the Franklin County Municipal Court Clerk, agreed with Hardin. Tyack said 4,680 citations have been filed with the clerk's office since the start of 2025, which has 'caused a drain on office resources by requiring deputy clerks to focus on the processing of these citations instead of their assigned tasks.' Additional funding has been requested for staff 'specifically designated to process the Village of Brice citations,' Tyack said. 'The Village would argue that the safety of our children should not be described as 'a loophole' as previously reported, and we would invite everyone driving through our community to do so with care and consideration,' the village said. A 2022 news release from the Ohio Auditor of State said Brice did not have 'adequate controls to ensure traffic citations issued and fines ultimately collected from automated speed enforcement cameras were in proper order.' The release said the village would include increased reporting requirements in its third-party contracts with the administrators. As of Thursday morning, the village had not responded to an NBC4 email with follow-up questions on whether the increased reporting requirements were implemented when the program resumed. New Brice Flavour Drops, MINNIE Shows Up — Coincidence? We Think Not!

Subscribe to our FREE Okay, so hear us out. What if it's not just the weather, the food, or the fans that keep bringing MINNIE of the K-pop girl group i-dle back to Malaysia… what if it's a wholesome, crunchy snack made from brown, red, and black rice? This past weekend, things got super loud at 1 Utama's Oval Concourse when ecoBrown's launched the latest flavour in their Brice Flavoured Wholegrain Rice Puff snack line, Himalayan Salt . To mark the occasion, they brought in none other than MINNIE herself, turning a product launch into a full-blown fan gathering. Crowds queued from as early as 7am, waving lightsticks, holding handmade banners (some even in Thai and Korean), and chanting her name across four levels of the mall. MINNIE, clearly moved by the love, said, 'I'm so surprised… some fans even came straight from the airport to here! I really appreciate your love.' She opened the event with a cheerful, 'Saya sayang semua! Ayang angat!' and the crowd just melted. Brice X MINNIE: A Match Made in Snack Heaven If you've been anywhere near the healthy snack aisle lately, you've probably seen Brice — the guilt-free, baked rice snack that's won over taste buds with flavours like Spicy Cheese, Seaweed, and Truffle. Now, Himalayan Salt joins the lineup, bringing that perfect balance of savoury crunch and wellness perks. Made from a blend of brown, red, and black rice, Brice is rich in Vitamins B6, B3, and E. It's baked, not fried — which means you get all the flavour with none of the greasy fingers. Or as MINNIE puts it: 'Tasty but healthy.' In fact, she admitted, 'I want to eat a lot. But I tell myself to control. If possible, I like to eat a lot.' (Relatable, tbh 🫣) And Himalayan Salt isn't just any salt. It's prized for its minerals and beauty-boosting properties, making this flavour a top pick for those who want to snack and slay. According to Vynce Lim, Head of Marketing at ecoBrown's parent company SW Food, the launch was about more than just taste. 'With Brice, you will enjoy the satisfaction of having a light snack while maintaining a healthy body,' she shared. More than that, she said the snacks were about creating 'special moments for friends, loved ones, and loyal customers.' 'Snack Brice While Listening To My Album' The launch wasn't just about the product, it was a mini showcase too! MINNIE sang a snippet of her solo track Valentine's Dream, busted out a few dance moves, and even teased fans with this line: 'Snack Brice while listening to my album.' (Marketing queen behaviour 💅) She also gave a cheeky suggestion for Brice's next line of new flavours 'Som tam? Durian? Let's go for durian!' Honestly? We'd snack on that. Fans didn't leave empty-handed either, as people were grabbing baskets of Brice, snapping pics at activity booths, and soaking up every second of the K-pop chaos. Will MINNIE Be Back? All signs point to yes! MINNIE spoke fondly of Malaysia, saying the weather reminds her of home and that the iconic 'Malaysia Truly Asia' jingle has 'stick in my head,' since she was a child, she laughed. 'I'd love to come to Malaysia more often. Please wait for me and i-dle. Hopefully next year. Can you wait for us?' —- MINNIE. She also added, 'I wanna go visit Kota Kinabalu,' which sent Sabahan fans into a frenzy. 'The photos look so good — the sea looks clear, peaceful. I really want to go someday,' she said, adding that she hopes to visit Malaysia more often. So… could Brice be the real reason she keeps coming back? We're not saying it is, but we're also not, not saying it. 😗 So, are y'all ready to snack smart like MINNIE? The new Brice Himalayan Salt Flavoured Wholegrain Rice Puff is available now in 40g and 100g packs at Jaya Grocer, Mydin, Lotus's, AEON, and most major supermarkets near you. Two new aircrafts to appear at International Ayr Show this year

The two air forces will be appearing this September. Both the French Air and Space Force and Belgian Air Force are set to appear at the International Ayr Show – Festival of Flight this September. Organisers are "excited" to confirm the French aerobatic team known as Équipe de Voltige de l'Armée de l'Air (EVAA) as the first of the international aerial displays for the airshow, and a new display for 2025. ‌ The breath-taking aerobatic display will showcase the talent of this team of highly qualified elite military pilots, including the current word aerobatic champion. ‌ The EVAA operate the Extra EA-330SC high performance aircraft capable of complex aerial manoeuvres. The two aircraft joining the airshow in Ayr will be flown by world class pilots, affectionately known as 'Souche' and 'Brice', who will deliver a two-ship display program featuring their own thrilling individual sections. This year, for the first time, there will be a static display of the Belgian Air Force Augusta 109BA Hirundo on Ayr's Low Green, allowing festival goers an up-close look at this impressive helicopter. The Augusta has been used in roles such as armed reconnaissance, observation, tactical support, medical evacuation and for anti-tank missions. As part of this unique attraction, the public will be able to meet the crew to learn about what they do and find out more about the aircraft. Leader of South Ayrshire Council, Councillor Brian Connolly said: "It's fantastic to be able to announce two new aircraft for this year's airshow – and two international acts at that! The crowds are sure to be thoroughly impressed by the highly technical display put on by the expert pilots from the French aerobatic team, and I'm certainly looking forward to it." Depute Leader of South Ayrshire Council and Portfolio Holder for Tourism, Culture and Rural Affairs, Councillor Alec Clark said: "Excitement is building for the International Ayr Show – Festival of Flight, so it's wonderful to be able to announce that two brand new aircraft are on the bill this year. I'm sure locals and visitors alike will be flocking to the Low Green to catch a glimpse of the Augusta up close and meet the crew!" ‌ CEO of The Skylab, Geoff Coxon, said: "I'm absolutely delighted to have the Belgian Air Force attend our airshow. We are aware that as a seaside display, we do not have the ability to get aircraft on the ground so the public can get access to the aircraft as other airshows are able to do. And as the airport is too far away to have a static event whilst the airshow is happening, we decided to almost bring the airport to Low Green so everyone will be able meet and chat to the Augusta helicopter crew. "It is a privilege, and honour, to have the French Air & Space Force join us this year, and we are one of only two displays that EVAA will attend in the UK in 2025. It illustrates how our airshow is now regarded as one of the best In the UK where international teams want to come and display." The event will take place on Friday, September 5 and Saturday, September 6 at Ayr's shorefront - with activities and attractions throughout the Low Green.
