Lewis Capaldi soars up charts to number 1 after sensational Glastonbury comeback
Following an incredibly emotional return to music from his two-year hiatus, beloved pop star Lewis Capaldi has claimed another number one single. The Someone You Loved hitmaker, 28, walked out to a mammoth crowd at Glastonbury last weekend after weeks of speculation that he was due to play a secret set. While he delighted the sea of adoring fans with his biggest hits, he also played his new tune, Survive, which features deeply personal lyrics about his time out of the spotlight. Gut-wrenchingly honest lines include, 'Most nights, I fear that I'm not enough' and 'I'm gonna get up and live until the day that I die'. And it seems the ballad has resonated with everyone, as it's become Lewis's sixth number one on the UK Official Singles Chart, sitting proudly alongside Bruises, Before You Go, and Pointless. But that's not all, because the song has secured the biggest opening week of his career so far. Shifting 68,500 chart units in its opening week, including over four million streams, Survive surpasses Lewis's previous 56,000-unit best, 2022's Forget Me, to secure the feat. To add to that, Survive secures the biggest opening week of any chart-topping single in 2025 thus far, overtaking Sabrina Carpenter's Manchild, which managed 62,400 chart units. Speaking to Official Charts after his phenomenal comeback, Lewis said: 'Survive is this week's UK number one, and I want to say a massive thank you to everybody who's been streaming it, downloading it—it really means the world.' He added sweetly: 'I've been away for a little while, and to come back to this outpouring of love and support has been absolutely incredible. 'I can't thank everybody enough for all the kind words since Glastonbury—and now this! It's been the best week of my life.' 'I hope you all continue to enjoy the song; it means a lot to me.' Joining Lewis in Official Charts victory this week is fellow Glasto performer Lorde, who has secured her first number one album with Virgin, which she declared 'absolutely insane'. Meanwhile, having soundtracked the UK's heatwave, Michigan DJ and producer MK, also known as Marc Kinchen, holds strong at number two with Chrystal collab Dior, and Olivia Dean has lifted three places to its best slot at 15. Lewis has been soft-launching his return to public life in recent months with various appearances and surprise gigs, but his Glasto set was the first major show he's played since 2023. That year, hearts broke across the nation as he grew tearful, relying on the audience to finish his songs due to vocal struggles and a flare-up of his Tourette's syndrome. Lewis apologised profusely at the time, admitting he felt 'annoyed' with himself, before making the tough decision to cancel all commitments and work on his physical and mental health. He said that it was 'obvious' things couldn't continue as they were, explaining that he still needed to 'adjust' to the impact Tourette's was having on his life, having been diagnosed with the condition in September 2022. The Scottish songwriter delved further into life with Tourette's in his 2023 NTA-winning documentary Lewis Capaldi: How I'm Feeling Now, in which he also discussed the pressures of fame and his rapid rise to stardom. Since his comeback, Lewis has proven he's definitely here to stay, having also announced an arena tour to kick off later this year. More Trending He'll be playing 10 shows across the UK and Ireland, starting in Sheffield on September 7 and concluding on September 29 in Dublin. When sharing the tour news, Lewis wrote on Instagram in his typical comedic style: 'about time I got back to work… hope to see you out there'. After fans quizzed him on the possibility of adding more dates, he confirmed that this will be a limited run of gigs; however, there appears to be every reason to hope for more in 2026. 'will be my only shows in the uk, ireland or europe this year! would love to see ya there', he wrote. Got a story?
