Clemson staffers throw shade after top defensive line recruit picks SEC school

Clemson football lost out on a big-time recruit Saturday when four-star defensive lineman Bryce Perry-Wright committed to Texas A&M over the Tigers. Shortly after Perry-Wright committed, some Clemson staffers threw some not-so-subtle shade at his decision — and one comment in particular. Advertisement Perry-Wright, the No. 38 player in the Class of 2026, is the cousin of former Clemson star Grady Jarrett and the nephew of current Tigers defensive end Armon Mason. He's from Buford, Georgia and once called Clemson his 'dream school.' But after a long and winding recruitment process, Perry-Wright picked Texas A&M instead, announcing for the SEC's Aggies over finalists Clemson, Texas and Miami. 247Sports posted a story at 5:04 p.m. Saturday recapping Perry-Wright's commitment, which included this quote from him on Texas A&M: 'It's kind of D-Line University now.' He later repeated that comment on a 247Sports live stream. Clemson staffer Da'Quan Bowers saw those comments and quickly took to X (formerly Twitter) to push back against Perry-Wright's assertion that Texas A&M was better than Clemson at producing NFL defensive linemen. Advertisement 'Ain't but one DLU! Check the records #ALLIN' Bowers posted at 5:06 p.m. Saturday. That post from Bowers, a former All-American Clemson defensive end who's in his third season on staff, drew a number of positive reactions from Clemson fans and was also reposted by Tigers defensive coordinator Tom Allen on Saturday. College coaches, per NCAA rules, aren't allowed to publicly mention recruits by name until they're signed. But social media makes it easy for coaches to toe the line. Clemson staffers haven't been shy in recent years about making such statements when a recruit goes elsewhere. A number of staffers shared similar sentiments when four-star quarterback Blake Hebert flipped from Clemson to Notre Dame last fall. A scroll through recent NFL drafts show Clemson and Texas A&M are pretty close in those metrics. The Tigers under coach Dabo Swinney have had 15 players listed as a DT, DE, DL and/or OLB drafted since 2015, and Texas A&M has had 12. Advertisement Clemson's also had nine defensive lineman selected in the first two rounds of a draft dating back to 2015. But the Aggies had three alone in 2025 — Shemar Stewart, Nic Scourton and Shemar Turner — and all were selected among the draft's top 62 picks. Adding to Perry-Wright's comment was just how close he seemed to becoming a Tiger. Clemson was viewed as the clubhouse leader for the star defensive lineman at various points in his recruitment, including in final weeks before Texas A&M's push. Perry-Wright (6-foot-2, 260 pounds) ranks as the No. 3 defensive lineman and No. 38 overall recruit nationally in the 247Sports Composite. He is a five-star in some networks' rankings. Without Perry-Wright's commitment, Clemson still has the country's No. 9 overall recruiting Class for 2026. The group includes 20 commits and 14 four-stars.

Texas A&M Football Favored To Land Coveted Five-Star Edge Rusher From Class of 2026 Bryce Perry-Wright

Texas A&M Football Favored To Land Coveted Five-Star Edge Rusher From Class of 2026 Bryce Perry-Wright originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Texas A&M football is in the running for a crew of four- and five-star recruits heading into July. After a successful recruitment month in June, momentum is certainly on the Aggies' side. Advertisement One of the highest-rated defenders from the class of 2026 is set to make his announcement on July 5. For Texas A&M, it might be its chance to land a five-star edge rusher. Texas A&M football head coach Mike Lysaker-Imagn Images Bryce Perry-Wright is the No. 3 defensive lineman in the country and No. 38 overall recruit. He's No. 5 among student-athletes in Georgia. Even with his decision date rapidly approaching, Perry-Wright hasn't cut his list of four teams down. At the moment, Clemson, Miami, and Texas are in the race alongside Texas A&M. Once again the Aggies find themselves battling the Longhorns for a recruit. The two schools have gone back-and-forth throughout this recruitment cycle, but Texas A&M is starting to pick up some speed on its in-state rival. Advertisement However, it seems that head coach Mike Elko's biggest competitor in this battle is Clemson. 247Sports Crystal Ball® Predictions currently have the Tigers unanimously favored for the five-star edge. However, the Aggies know that unanimous projections don't always win in the end. Rivals' Steve Wiltfong already seems to think Texas A&M is starting to sway Perry-Wright over to College Station. Wiltfong's prediction was posted on X. In the past he's been correct about the Aggies, predicting they'd land Landon Rink, Deondrae Tiger, Ahston Bethel-Roman, and Deyjhon Pettaway. Wiltfong has a 91.21 accuracy rate, so it's not a long-shot for Perry-Wright to choose the Aggies. If Perry-Wright commits to Texas A&M, he'll join four-star Jermaine Kinsler, Jordan Carter, and Samu Moala in the class of 2026 as the committed defensive linemen. He'll be a weapon on the Aggies' defense and has "game-wrecking potential" as 247Sports' Grady Jarrett wrote in Perry-Wright's scouting report. It also read: "[Perry-Wright is a] quick-twitched, pocket-pusher with impressive get-off and body control that has created negative plays since he was a freshman . . . Lacks the ideal mass and measurables, but makes up for it with his mobility and energy. Excellent snap anticipation tends to give him an advantage while lively hands allow him to maneuver his way into the backfield and finish the job. Has attacked from multiple alignments while working primarily out of an odd front at the prep level . . . he has what it takes to be effective on stunts and games. Overall, should be viewed as an active interior defensive lineman that can shoot gaps and generate a rush." Advertisement Texas A&M is also hoping to land five-star Lamar Brown. Brown will announce his decision five days later on July 10. The Aggies will have to beat out Miami, LSU, and, once again, Texas, for this five-star recruit. Texas A&M Shockingly Lands Five-Star Defensive Lineman Bryce Perry-Wright Over Clemson

Texas A&M Shockingly Lands Five-Star Defensive Lineman Bryce Perry-Wright Over Clemson originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Texas A&M had some traction to land a five-star recruit once again, and the Aggies finished the job — once again. First it was Brandon Arrington, then Tristian Givens, and now another elite defenseman is heading to College Station. Advertisement Texas A&M football head coach Mike Elko. Maria Lysaker-Imagn Images Bryce Perry-Wright is a five-star defensive lineman from Buford, Ga. and is the No. 38 overall recruit from the class of 2026. He's also the No. 3 defensive lineman and No. 5 student-athlete out of Georgia. The rising senior was unanimously projected by 247Sports to commit to Clemson. He was also considering Miami and Texas in his decision, and he visited Texas A&M and its in-state rival over the last two weekends of official visit season. However, Perry-Wright announced that the Aggies were the best fit for him. As a junior in 2024, he recorded 57 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, and nine sacks. He was consistent between his sophomore and junior years, but had slightly more production in his latest season. Advertisement According to 247Sports' Grady Jarrett, Perry-Wright is: "A quick-twitched, pocket-pusher with impressive get-off and body control that has created negative plays since he was a [high school] freshman . . . Lacks the ideal mass and measurables, but makes up for it with his mobility and energy. Excellent snap anticipation tends to give him an advantage while lively hands allow him to maneuver his way into the backfield and finish the job." Jarret also wrote that the transition from high school to NCAA should not be too jarring for the rising senior and his abilities will transfer over just fine, likely playing on the interior. Perry-Wright will be an effective player for the Aggies and has "game-wrecking potential." The latest commit joins fellow five-stars Arrington and Givens, both of whom were recruited as defensemen. Head coach Mike Elko's defense for the years to come, needless to say, will be a force to be reckoned with. Clemson football 2026 target, 4-star DL Bryce Perry-Wright announces commitment

The Clemson Tigers and coach Dabo Swinney had long been considered the favorite to land elite four-star defensive lineman Bryce Perry-Wright in the 2026 recruiting cycle. But on Saturday, Perry-Wright announced he was committing elsewhere. The 6-foot-2, 250-pound lineman is headed to College Station to play for Texas A&M after a late push by the Aggies this week. Advertisement Perry-Wright announced his decision in a live stream on 247Sports' YouTube channel. The Texas Longhorns and Miami Hurricanes were the other finalists for Perry-Wright. It's a disappointing loss for Clemson on the recruiting trail after a hot stretch in June when the Tigers added five commitments: four-star defensive lineman Keshawn Stancil (Clayton, North Carolina), four-star EDGE Dre Quinn (Buford, Georgia), three-star defensive lineman JR Hardrick (South Pittsburg, Tennessee), and four-star offensive linemen Leo Delaney and Carter Scruggs. Perry-Wright is the nation's No. 2 defensive lineman in 247Sports' player ratings for the 2026 class and is ranked as the No. 32 overall recruit. Rivals ranks him the No. 5 lineman and the No. 33 overall recruit. Perry-Wright had received a crystal ball prediction to sign with Clemson in late March, but Rivals recruiting expert Steve Wiltfong logged a prediction on Wednesday that the Peach State native would flip to Texas A&M. Blue-chip OL sets commitment date, Longhorns in top four

Texas has multiple offensive linemen committed for the 2026 cycle. On July 4, they have a great opportunity to add one of the top players not only at his position but in the entire country. That's when five-star Felix Ojo will make his decision between Texas, Ohio State, Florida, and Michigan per Hayes Fawcett. Back in May, Texas got the only crystal ball prediction for Ojo. As things currently stand, the Longhorns have the No. 12 recruiting class. However, with five-star defensive lineman Bryce Perry-Wright as a high possibility also, snagging Ojo as well would likely get them into the top 10. Advertisement Florida and Ohio State hosted Ojo for official visits in May. He took one to Michigan in June, but his final visit from his list of top contenders went to Texas a week later on June 13. Ojo is the nation's No. 7 overall player and the No. 2 offensive tackle according to 247Sports composite rankings. They also have the 6-foot-6, 275-pounder as the No. 1 prospect in the state of Texas. The Longhorns were both last month adding commitments with seven. They haven't had one since June 22 when four-star edge Richard Wesley made his pledge. Being able to get Ojo would get the recruitment trail rolling again.
