Foo Fighters Are Back With First Song Since 2023 to Celebrate 30th Anniversary

Foo Fighters have returned with their first song since 2023, releasing 'Today's Song' on Wednesday to commemorate the rock band's 30th anniversary. Along with the song, Dave Grohl also shared an extensive letter and audio recording for fans, where Grohl thanked drummer Josh Freese, who was let go from the group back in May, and paid tribute to the band's former longtime drummer Taylor Hawkins, who died back in 2022. 'Moments of beautiful victory, and moments of painful defeat. We have mended broken bones and broken hearts. But we have followed this road together, with each other, for each other, no matter what. Because in life, you just can't go it alone.' 'It should go without saying that without the boundless energy of William Goldsmith, the seasoned wisdom of Franz Stahl and the thunderous wizardry of Josh Freese, this story would be incomplete,' Grohl continued. 'So we extend our heartfelt gratitude for the time, music and memories that we shared with each of them over the years. Thank you, gentlemen.' 'Today's Song' is the band's first song since their 2023 album But Here We Are, and it comes following a turbulent few years for Foo Fighters. Hawkins' death devastated the band and their fan base as they lost their longest-tenured drummer. Grohl also drew significant press himself last year after revealing that he had a child outside of his marriage. And then there was Freese's dismissal two months ago. Of Hawkins, Grohl wrote, 'Your name is spoken every day, sometimes with tears, sometimes with a smile, but you are still in everything we do, everywhere we go, forever.' 'The enormity of your beautiful soul is only rivaled by the infinite longing we feel in your absence,' Grohl wrote. 'We all miss you beyond words. Foo Fighters will forever include Taylor Hawkins in every note that we play, until we do finally reach our destination.' Aside from the new song, Foo Fighters are hitting the road for some international dates later this fall, playing in Jakarta, Indonesia, on Oct. 2, Singapore on Oct. 4, Tokyo on Oct. 7, Osaka, Japan, on Oct. 10 and Mexico City on Nov. 14. The letter is available to read in full on the band's website, and the audio of the letter is available below. Legendary band Foo Fighters returned with 'Today's Song' ever since their 2023 album 'But Here We Are'. Foo Fighters released the new track on the occasion of the band's 30th anniversary. In a lengthy note to accompany the release, Dave Grohl pays tribute to former band members including the recently fired drummer Josh Freese, founding drummer William Goldsmith, guitarist Franz Stahl and, most poignantly, the late drummer Taylor Hawkins , who died in 2022, as per Deadline. In a portion of the letter addressed to Hawkins, Grohl, who apparently plays drums on the new song, writes, "Your name is spoken every day, sometimes with tears, sometimes with a smile, but you are still in everything we do, everywhere we go, forever. The enormity of your beautiful soul is only rivaled by the infinite longing we feel in your absence. We all miss you beyond words. Foo Fighters will forever include Taylor Hawkins in every note that we play, until we do finally reach our destination. " The new song, described in a press release as the band's "opening salvo of its next chapter," arrives 30 years since the release of Foo Fighters self-titled debut album and is the first new music since Grohl announced last year that he had fathered a daughter outside of his marriage and asked for his family for forgiveness.

Yes, Dave Grohl largely recorded the first Foo Fighters album by himself. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad After the death of Kurt Cobain and the end of Nirvana, Grohl went into Robert Lang Studios in Seattle in 1994. He spent about a week recording what would become the self-titled Foo Fighters debut album. On this album, he played all the instruments (drums, bass, guitar) and sang all the vocals himself. The only exception was a guest guitar part on the song 'X-Static' played by Greg Dulli of The Afghan Whigs, who happened to be in the studio at the time. Grohl initially recorded the album as a cathartic personal project, not intending it to be a major release. He even chose the name 'Foo Fighters' to hide his identity. However, when the demo tapes garnered significant record label interest, he then recruited a full band to perform the songs live, thus forming the Foo Fighters as we know them today. Who were the original members of Foo Fighters? The first full band line-up of Foo Fighters saw Dave Grohl rope in former Germs and Nirvana guitarist Pat Smear, alongside the rhythm section of Nate Mendel and William Goldsmith, formerly of Sunny Day Real Estate. Smear temporarily left the band, first replaced by former Scream bandmate Franz Stahl, before Chris Shiflett finally took on the lead guitar role to complement Smear upon his return. Foo Fighters drop new single 'Today's Song' – an emotional reflection and recollection

Foo Fighters have dropped their latest track, "Today's Song," marking their first original music since the 2023 album But Here We Are. The release comes nearly two years after the band's last single and follows a challenging period for the group. It is their first music since the death of drummer Taylor Hawkins in 2022 and the departure of drummer Josh Freese earlier this year. "Today's Song" features a typically anthemic Foo Fighters sound, with frontman Dave Grohl reflecting on personal struggles and existential angst. Grohl sings, 'I woke today screaming for change,' capturing the band's journey of reinvention. The track is accompanied by artwork from Grohl's daughter, Harper. Grohl also shared a heartfelt message acknowledging the contributions of past band members, including Freese, who was replaced after Hawkins' death. Freese, who was let go in May, expressed disappointment over the split but stated he was "not angry." The band's lineup remains unchanged, with Grohl on vocals and guitar, alongside Nate Mendel, Pat Smear, Chris Shiflett, and Rami Jaffee. However, the drummer for the new single has not been revealed. Grohl's message also touched on the loss of Hawkins, stating, "Your name is spoken every day, sometimes with tears, sometimes with a smile, but you are still in everything we do." In a statement, Grohl referenced recent personal challenges, including his infidelity scandal, and explained that life's difficulties often signal the need for change and growth. The band plans to return to live performances this October, with several shows scheduled in Asia and Mexico. Earlier this week, the band released a cover of Minor Threat's 'I Don't Wanna Hear It,' recorded in 1995 with new vocals added this year.

Foo Fighters drop first new music since Dave Grohl scandal, celebrating 30 years as a band

Foo Fighters are releasing new music after a tumultuous few years. With their new single "Today's Song," the band is celebrating three decades as a group – their self-titled debut album was released on July 4, 1995. In a release, the track was dubbed an "opening salvo" for the band's "next chapter." Headed up by Dave Grohl, the rock collective has made an indelible mark on the genre, bringing reliably boot-stomping anthems to a loyal cadre of fans. In recent years, though, the group has suffered some upheaval, including the death of beloved drummer Taylor Hawkins in 2022, the unexpected firing of his replacement Josh Freese in May, and finally a paternity scandal that embroiled frontman Grohl. Dave Grohl announces he fathered a child outside of 21-year marriage, seeks 'forgiveness' In September, Grohl took to social media to share that he had fathered a child outside his marriage of 21 years. "I love my wife and my children, and I am doing everything I can to regain their trust and earn their forgiveness," he wrote on Instagram at the time. "We're grateful for your consideration toward all the children involved, as we move forward together." "Today's Song" marks the first musical release for Grohl since the revelation. The band's last full album, "But Here We Are," dropped in 2023. Whether the latest single preludes a fuller project remains to be seen. "Over the years, we've had moments of unbridled joy, and moments of devastating heartbreak. Moments of beautiful victory, and moments of painful defeat," Ghrol wrote in a statement announcing the single. "We have mended broken bones and broken hearts. But we have followed this road together, with each other, for each other, no matter what. Because in life, you just can't go it alone." Foo Fighters drummer Josh Freese 'booted' from the band: 'Shocked and disappointed' He added that "without the boundless energy of William Goldsmith, the seasoned wisdom of Franz Stahl, and the thunderous wizardry of Josh Freese, this story would be incomplete, so we extend our heartfelt gratitude for the time, music, and memories that we shared with each of them over the years. Thank you, gentlemen. Grohl used the statement to invoke the memory of Hawkins, who played drums and shared vocal lead for the band since shortly after its genesis. 'What an incredible talent': Taylor Hawkins, longtime Foo Fighters drummer, dead at 50 "And… Taylor," he wrote. "Your name is spoken every day, sometimes with tears, sometimes with a smile, but you are still in everything we do, everywhere we go, forever. "The enormity of your beautiful soul is only rivaled by the infinite longing we feel in your absence. We all miss you beyond words. Foo Fighters will forever include Taylor Hawkins in every note that we play, until we do finally reach our destination," he concluded. The band is headed out on an international mini-tour beginning in October with shows in Japan, Mexico and India.
