Defence sector holds promise for start-ups, MSMEs and entrepreneurs, says ex-chief of Confederation of Indian Industry
A new ecosystem is emerging for the defence sector as private industry participation increases, said R. Nandini, former chairperson of the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Southern Region, in Coimbatore on Friday (June 27, 2025). Speaking at the inauguration of The Hindu businessline MSME Growth Conclave – Coimbatore 2025, she said that micro, small and medium-scale enterprises (MSMEs) are at a pivotal moment and are navigating through a complicated international scenario. With regard to the defence sector, there is a shift in government policy and a fundamental change in the mindset of entrepreneurs too, she said. Start-ups, the MSMEs and technology innovators are contributing to national security and defence production. Coimbatore plays a significant role in this as it has its strengths in engineering, manufacturing, and high precision industries. These units are in an advantageous position to contribute and benefit from this transition of the defence sector, she added. Coimbatore has a history of strong collaboration with Germany and this should be showcased globally, she added. Raghuvir Srinivasan, Editor of The Hindu businessline, said the fifth edition of the MSME conclave, which is organised in Bengaluru annually, has expanded this year to Coimbatore. The event had panel discussions on 'Delivering a Big Bang (on defence supplies)' and 'Navigating Global Trade Disruptions'. Ajay Srivastava, founder of the Global Trade Research Initiative, in a fireside chat with Aarathi Krishnan, Consulting Editor of The Hindu businessline, spoke on free trade agreements, the impact of U.S. President Donald Trump's posts on social media, and the trade happening between the U.S. and India. The conclave, powered by Janatics and HDFC Bank, had SSVM Institutions Coimbatore, City Union Bank, Radiance Realty, SIDBI, South Indian Bank, Tally, Milky Mist, Indian Overseas Bank, and Union Bank of India as Associate Partners and Lexus as the Luxury Partner.

Mizoram receives one of lowest shares of CSR funds in India: CM Lalduhoma
Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Friday said the state receives one of the lowest shares of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds from companies in the country. He attributed the low inflow of funds to the limited number of registered CSR implementing agencies in the state. "Even though there are numerous companies operating in India and are obligated under law to implement Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, Mizoram continues to receive one of the lowest shares of CSR funds in the country," the chief minister said. Lalduhoma was addressing the valedictory function of a three-day capacity building workshop for NGOs and implementing agencies in Aizawl. The event was organised jointly by Mizoram CSR cell and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII). The chief minister said that CSR funds have the potential to significantly contribute to developmental works, citing the Serchhip district hospital building as an example, where over Rs 21 crore was harnessed through CSR. Emphasising the need for more registered implementing agencies in the state to get more such funds, he said that a dedicated CSR cell was established in the CMO to increase the number of registered agencies and guide them in mobilising them. Lalduhoma also urged societies, NGOs, and hospitals to register as implementing agencies and assured them that the CSR Cell would continue to assist them. The event was attended by the chief minister's adviser (finance and planning) and MLA TBC Lalvenchhunga, who is also the chairman of CSR cell.

‘Young Indians Parliament 2.0' held
Trichy: Young Indians (Yi), Trichy Chapter, under the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), conducted the Young Indians Parliament 2.0 – chapter level round at Shrimati Indira Gandhi College on Friday. More than 300 students from across the region participated in it. The event promoted civic awareness, leadership qualities, and democratic values among school and college students through a simulated parliamentary experience. The inaugural session was launched by DMK Rajya Sabha member 'Tiruchi' Siva. He interacted with the students and explained about the history of the Indian Parliament, the structure and types of parliamentary proceedings, and key differences between the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. The MP also elaborated on how bills are introduced and passed, the functioning of Zero Hour, and the distinction between policies and laws. An interactive session was also conducted where the MP responded to leadership and policy-related queries from students. CII said the valedictory session will be addended by Trichy MP Durai Vaiko.

Coimbatore City Police, Young Indians conduct awareness programme on drugs
Coimbatore City Police and Young Indians (CII) joined hands to mark International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on June 26 with an event at Thomas Park, Race Course. A. Saravana Sundar IPS, City Police Commissioner, took part. More than 200 students from various colleges across the city came together to stand united against substance abuse and spread the message of drug-free life. Caroline Rajan, Co-Chair, Yi Health, said 'Namakku Vendam' was one of the earnest efforts to prevent society from the harms of drugs. Saumya Gayathri, Chair, Yi-Yuva, said Yi in collaboration with Yuva - a college students' network, conducted 13 events, reaching out to nearly 8,000 students. Neil Kikani, Chair- Yi Coimbatore, spoke about the importance of safeguarding our neighbourhood, friends and the city from drug abuse. Mr. Saravana Sundar that drug abuse could hinder the productivity of youth, the strength of labour and the growth of our nation. The Commissioner administered an International Day Against Drug Abuse pledge to the participants. Students from Dr. NGP Arts and Science College, KPR College of Arts, Science and Research, Sri Ramakrishna College of Arts and Science performed on the theme 'Namaku Vendam – Say No to Drugs'.

CII holds Muharram peace conference
The CII on Thursday hosted its annual National Ulema and Mashaikh Peace Conference in connection with the sacred month of Muharram reaffirming its commitment to peace, unity, and inter-sectarian harmony under the framework of the "Paigham-e-Pakistan" national narrative. During the conference, the Ulema and Mashaikh unanimously endorsed a code of conduct emphasising that every sect has the right to preach its beliefs, while hate speech, incitement, and taking the law into one's own hands would not be tolerated. The scholars agreed that the authority to declare any individual an apostate (Takfir) lies solely with the courts.
