Doral Academy rallies to advance to state softball final with walk-off in eighth inning
With the Class 6A state softball semifinal on the line on Friday, Doral Academy freshman Zoey Abdullah stood in the batter's box against Bloomingdale senior Natalie Cable, a UCLA recruit. Despite the fact that Cable has struck out more than 1,000 batters in her prep career, Abdullah got the job done, lofting a walk-off sacrifice fly in the eighth inning as Doral prevailed, 5-4, in Longwood. 'I don't usually celebrate much,' Doral coach Willie Viruet said, 'but I had to throw up a couple of fist pumps after this one.' Doral (30-1) will play the Pace Patriots (24-3) on Saturday at 2 p.m. for the state championship. A victory would give Doral its second state title and its first since 2021. But the Doral Firebirds, ranked No. 1 in the state and No. 4 in the nation, according to MaxPreps, almost didn't make it to Saturday's final. Doral fell behind 3-1 in the fourth inning despite the fact that two of the Firebirds' greatest former players were in the dugout on Friday, helping Viruet and his staff coach. Those two players are: Amanda 'Tuta' Ramirez, who just graduated from the University of Pittsburgh where she served that team's catcher; and Louisville pitcher Alyssa Zabala. 'There were a bunch more of our alumni sitting in the stands,' Viruet said. Perhaps all that support inspired Doral senior Sarah Breaux, a Clemson recruit who homered in the bottom of the fourth, cutting Bloomingdale's lead to 3-2. That was Breaux's 14th homer of the season, which is one behind team leader Anabela Abdullah, who is a Texas recruit and Zoey's older sister. Doral then trailed 4-2 entering the bottom of the sixth. But the Firebirds started a rally with a Breaux walk and single from Leyani Viruet, the coach's daughter. Both runners came home, including Viruet, who scored the tying run on an RBI single from Sara Utera. The game then went to extra innings, where the designated runner starts each frame at second base. So, with a speedy runner on second and no outs, Doral pitcher Meagan Villazon retired Cable on a pop-out in one of the game's biggest moments. Earlier in the game, Cable had slugged her 15th homer of the season on a Villazon curve. This time, Villazon won the battle. 'I was a little worried because I had missed my spot and she homered off me in her previous at-bat,' Villazon said. 'This time, I just tried to spin the ball as best I could. 'I got the result I wanted, and I was hyped.' Villazon got the next two batters, also on pop-outs, ending the threat. 'Meagan didn't have her best stuff today, but we battled the whole game,' Coach Viruet said. 'We didn't make any errors, and we defended the bunt well.' After escaping that jam, Doral started the bottom of the eight with Utera on second as the designated runner. Ashley Tremont got on base with an infield single, moving Utera to third. Then, after an unproductive out, Abdullah delivered against Cable, who finished with 10 strikeouts. Abdullah's fly ball to right-center was not hit that deep, though, causing an anxious moment or two. 'The ball hung there for a second,' Viruet said. 'Everything paused in my mind until I saw it was deep enough.' This was the first time all year that Doral played extra innings. And it was just Doral's second one-run game. Next up is Pace, which is ranked fourth in the state and 18th in the nation. Pace won the 6A state last year with Jayden Heavener, who is now pitching for LSU. This year, Pace relies on sophomore pitcher Hannah DeMarcus, who is 23-2 with a 0.29 ERA and 15 shutouts. In fact, Pace has shut out its past four opponents. Overall, this season, Pace has posted 18 shutouts and held opponents to just one run five times. Also, Pace has lost just two games all season to Florida schools. Doral, which is undefeated against Florida schools, will counter DeMarcus with Villazon, who is 25-1 with a 0.66 ERA. This will be the first meeting between Doral and Pace, according to Viruet. 'We've checked them out,' Viruet said when asked about scouting Pace. 'We do our homework. Coaching travel ball for more than 10 years helps. We've seen a lot of their kids. '(DeMarcus) is a competitor. They have elite pitching in that Pace program. But we are 'ride or die' with (Villazon).'

CBN holds monetary policy rate at 27.5% amid economic adjustments
Nigeria's Monetary Policy Rate (MPR), the nation's benchmark interest rate, has been kept at 27.5 percent by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) through its Monetary Policy Committee (MPC). The Central Bank of Nigeria maintained the Monetary Policy Rate at 27.5%. Governor Olayemi Cardoso highlighted unanimous support for the decision by the Monetary Policy Committee. Key macroeconomic improvements were noted, including narrowing exchange rate gaps and food inflation moderation. Following Tuesday's MPC's 300th meeting, CBN Governor Olayemi Cardoso revealed the decision at a press event in Abuja. The CBN governor noted that the committee's decision was unanimous, highlighting the necessity of exercising caution as Nigeria negotiates continuous economic changes. Before making any more changes, he said, the MPC thinks that keeping the interest rate at its current level will enable it to monitor and evaluate short-term economic trends. The committee decided to keep the liquidity ratio at 30% and the cash reserve ratio (CRR) at 50%. 'MPC noted the relative improvements in some key macroeconomic indicators expected to support the overall moderation in crisis in the near to medium term,' Cardoso said. 'These include the progressive narrowing of the gap between the Nigerian foreign exchange market, bureau de change (BDC) windows, the positive balance of payments position, and the easy price of PMS. The members also noted with satisfaction the progressive moderation in food inflation and, therefore, commended the government for implementing measures to increase food supply, as well as stepping up the fight against insecurity, especially in farming communities. The committee thus encouraged security agencies to sustain the momentum while the government provides necessary inputs to farmers to further boost food production.' However, according to the governor of the CBN, the committee recognized that there were underlying inflationary pressures, primarily caused by high electricity costs, ongoing need for foreign exchange, pressure, and other legacy structural elements, as seen on the Cable. 'The MPC noted new policies introduced by the federal government to boost local production, reduce foreign currency demand pressures, and thus lessen the pass-through to domestic crisis,' he said. 'Given the relative stability observed in the foreign exchange market, members urged the bank to sustain the implementation of the ongoing reforms to further boost market confidence,' he added. This decision underscores the committee's commitment to managing inflationary pressures while maintaining economic stability. The MPR is the principal instrument for regulating interest rates in the financial system, affecting loan costs, investment activity, and overall economic development.

Kerry family's story during laying of Transatlantic Cable to be explored in new Siamsa Tíre show
The Cable is a one-man show which explores how a family's emotional struggles mirror a world on the brink of a communication revolution in 1866, when the Transatlantic Cable was laid in Valentia Island. The Transatlantic Cable ran from Valentia Island to Newfoundland, spanning over 3,000 kilometres beneath the Atlantic Ocean, and revolutionised global communication by reducing message transmission across continents from weeks to mere minutes. The Cable is said to be a poignant exploration of loss, hope, and the universal longing for connection. The show is written and will be performed by Mike Kelly while it is co-produced by Siamsa Tíre and directed by the acclaimed Aidan Dooley, creator of Tom Crean: Antarctic Explorer. The show blends visual storytelling shaped by Mike Kelly with original music by Dave McGilton, lighting design by John Hurley, and the direction of Aidan Dooley. Audiences are promised a compelling narrative of personal and historical transformation set against one of Ireland's most dramatic landscapes. Writer and performer of the play Mike Kelly said the production is about more than a piece of history. 'It's about the way we reach for each other across distances, how technology transforms us, and the enduring ties of family and love,' Mike said. Director Aidan Dooley said returning to Siamsa Tíre with a story rooted in Kerry's soil and soul is incredibly meaningful. 'The Transatlantic Cable is a symbol of global connection, and this play brings that down to a deeply personal level — showing how progress and pain often walk hand in hand,' Aidan stated. More info The 2018 action thriller, The Night Comes for Us, has earned a stunning 92 per cent score on Rotten Tomatoes, showcasing it as an unbridled triumph of raw, gripping storytelling and sheer visceral intensity. Conceived initially as a script by writer-director Timo Tjahjanto, The Night Comes for Us then journeyed through adaptation as a graphic novel before finally manifesting as the edge-of-your-seat film experience that audiences can't get enough of. The movie reunites the iconic duo Joe Taslim and Iko Uwais of The Raid: Redemption fame, with The Night Comes for Us also featuring the talents of Julie Estelle, Sunny Pang, Zack Lee, and Shareefa Daanish. At its core, The Night Comes for Us thrusts viewers into a world of brutal combat, with gruesomely intense fight scenes that are bound to leave an impact thanks to the unparalleled gore. Robert Liefeld, co-creator of Deadpool and Cable, lavished praise on the film and its director as he took to X (formerly Twitter) to applaud the movie. He said: "Give Timo Tjahjanto ALL the money for Deadpool 3!!!!Holee mother of God, I have seen the future of action films and it is TIMO TJAHJANTO!! The Indonesian cinema is exerting a significant influence on action films globally. Give these filmmakers major comic book IP's to experiment with. Heck, even a stand alone Cable film under the direction of @Timobros would be groundbreaking." Despite criticism for the violence and gore depicted on screen, the action-packed film stunned critics universally, with one saying: "This is incredibly violent to the point of disturbing. Nonetheless, the fight scenes are some of the best I've ever seen. But this is a very dark and depressing story." Another critic's review of the film added: "The Night Comes For Us is a dynamite two hours and for those of us missing the action films of old, it's a breath of fresh air." Praise was also heaped upon the movie by another review, which acclaimed: "An utterly thrilling ride from the first second to the last, The Night Comes For Us is one of the best action movies of recent years." The film has left audiences on an adrenaline high, with a viewer sharing their excitement: "As a die-hard action fan, I went into this movie with high expectations-and it still managed to blow me away. The action sequences are intense, brutal, and beautifully choreographed. It's a full-on adrenaline rush from start to finish. This one's a must-watch for any action junkie." Regular re-watches are in order for some, as one audience member admiringly remarked: "I still come back and watch this film from time to time. I love the fight choreography. Even after watching it a few times, I still cringe on a few moments when I see blades go in places they shouldn't. This is right up there with The Raid films for me." One particular viewer suggested that Western cinema could take note from Indonesia, as they expressed: "Quick, gruesome, stylish which personifies Indonesian movies. Iko Uwais and Joe Taslim were awesome as usual and Hollywood should learn from them." One viewer was left utterly impressed by the film's spectacular display, exclaiming: "Absolutely fantastic movie. Some of the best action directing and some of the best action choreography I've ever seen. The relationship between Iko and Arian is incredibly tragic and compelling. Exceeded my expectations in every way."
