Guardians could trade Emmanuel Clase, Cade Smith for much-needed upgrade
While the Cleveland Guardians aren't likely to move on from Emmanuel Clase or Cade Smith at the MLB trade deadline, there is a scenario in which either could be moved. Jim Bowden of The Athletic proposed that the Guardians could move Clase or Smith to bolster their struggling offense, which has been the third-worst in baseball this season. "The Guardians need to rebuild their offense around future Hall of Famer Jose Ramirez," Bowden writes, "and they could use the back of their bullpen - either Emmanuel Clase or Cade Smith - to make it happen." Moving on from either reliever would take a lot for the Guardians to make such a decision. If Cleveland receives a strong offer, including a massive offensive piece, then the Guardians may consider moving on from one of their relievers. While not a perfect fit, since the Boston Red Sox don't need a reliever as much as they do a starter, a player like Jarren Duran could be enough for Cleveland to move one of their top relievers. MORE: Guardians trade negotiations 'frustrating' MLB teams ahead of deadline Adding offense is a massive priority, since their team's OPS is just .665, better than only the Chicago White Sox and the Pittsburgh Pirates. For a team which was supposed to compete for a postseason spot, it's been a major letdown. Instead of holding onto their two relievers, who are drawing significant interest around baseball, they could move them to land massive offensive upgrades. They could also just move one, and the other could stay as the team's closer. That way, the Guardians would still have at least one dominant closer on the roster, while also tapping into their highly valued bullpen to begin addressing their issues offensively. But, no matter what the Guardians do, whether Clase or Smith are traded or stay, the team desperately needs to add more firepower to the offense. Steven Kwan, Jose Ramirez, and Kyle Manzardo are the only Guardians players with an OPS above .700. Bowden mentioned that the Guardians could move either Clase or Smith for offensive upgrades. It would be a bold move, but with plenty of interest, there would surely be a solid offensive player the team could add if they pulled off such a trade. MORE MLB NEWS: Padres' A.J. Yankees, Dodgers Tabbed 'Best Fits' In Trade Deadline Deal For Star Pitcher
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Los Angeles Dodgers and New York Yankees met in the World Series last postseason, with the Dodgers triumphantly coming out on top. Now these two teams are working back to the postseason, and they'll likely be two of the more active teams in baseball at the trade deadline. Pair this with the fact that both teams need to add pitching, and there's a chance we see the Yankees and Dodgers battle in bidding wars before we see them meet in the World Series again. ESPN's Jeff Passan recently listed the Dodgers and Yankees as two of the best fits in a trade for Cleveland Guardians reliever Cade Smith. SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA - JUNE 21: Cade Smith #36 of the Cleveland Guardians pitching in the bottom of the seventh inning against the Athletics at Sutter Health Park on June 21, 2025 in Sacramento, California. SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA - JUNE 21: Cade Smith #36 of the Cleveland Guardians pitching in the bottom of the seventh inning against the Athletics at Sutter Health Park on June 21, 2025 in Sacramento, California. Justine Willard/Athletics/Getty Images "Smith has been arguably the best reliever in baseball since the beginning of the 2024 season, and with more than 13 strikeouts per nine innings, he could be the solution to many teams' late-inning woes," Passan wrote. "With four more years of control, he would also be a prohibitively expensive trade target for most teams, making a deal difficult to come by." Smith has quietly been one of the best pitchers in baseball for over a year now, but he hasn't gotten the same amount of attention as guys like Ryan Helsley, Tanner Scott, Devin Williams, and Emmanuel Clase. The Yankees don't need another closer in their bullpen, but adding a high-leverage guy like Smith would be a huge step in the right direction. The righty might be expensive to acquire, but he's just what the Yankees need. The same can be said for the Dodgers. They have the talent in the bullpen already. Adding another reliable arm would take a lot of the pressure off the guys like Scott, who are struggling. More MLB: Padres Blockbuster? MLB Insider Adds Fuel To Fire Of Trade Deadline Rumors

MLB Rumors: Big Update Emerges on Yankees and Mets Potential Trade for Pair of Impact Pitchers
Both the New York Yankees and New York Mets are on the hunt to improve their bullpens before the July 31st MLB trade deadline. A new report has offered a major update on a pair of big-time relief pitchers that are officially up for grabs. 'Guardians are listening on relievers, including stars Cade Smith and Emmanuel Clasé,' New York Post MLB insider Jon Heyman reported on Saturday. 'Prices are understandably high. They are seen as not too likely to trade either top pen guy, and with MLB's easiest closing schedule, they aren't even a certain seller.' There have been a lot of MLB rumors suggesting star closer Clase could be available before this month's trade deadline. However, heading into the MLB games today, the Guardians are just 4.5 games out of the final Wild Card spot. While they have struggled this year, they will get back two-time All-Star Shane Bieber next month. That is why Heyman isn't willing to call them sellers this month just yet. What adding Smith and/or Clase means for the Yankees and Mets Cade Smith is only in his second season in the big leagues, but the 26-year-old has emerged as one of the better relievers in the American League. He has a mid-90s fastball and a plus slider. He would be a very nice addition for either the Yankees or Mets, and he is under team control until 2029. Meaning he has the potential to be a future closer option for either club. However, Clase is the true prize of the Guardian's pen. He is a three-time All-Star who posted an absurd 0.61 ERA in 2024. While he isn't posting the same numbers this year, he still has a sub-3.00 ERA, 21 saves, and a 44-10 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He is under team control for three more seasons. Clase joining the Yankees would give them an impressive late-inning trio with Devin Williams and Luke Weaver. The Mets have an All-Star closer in Edwin Diaz. But he and Clase would be the best one-two punch from the pen in the entire league. MLB insider reports Guardians listening to trade offers on relievers
The MLB trade deadline is less than two weeks away, and the Cleveland Guardians are expected to be one of the most prominent teams as the deadline approaches. If they sell, there will be plenty of great options on the market. Their best assets, who are also the most realistic to be moved, reside in the bullpen. And according to Jon Heyman of The New York Post, the Guardians are listening to offers on the team's relievers. "Guardians are listening to relievers, including stars Smith and Clase." Heyman writes, "Prices are understandably high. They are seen as not too likely to trade either top pen guy, and with MLB's easiest closing schedule, they aren't even a certain seller." This report from Heyman paints the picture for the Guardians that, while they have assets teams would want, they aren't too keen to sell. Combined with their easy schedule, the Guardians might be in postseason contention by the time the deadline rolls around. Emmanuel Clase is one of the most sought-after trade targets this season. He's been great once again, with a 2.86 ERA and 44 strikeouts to go with 21 saves through 44 innings pitched this season. MORE: Guardians trade negotiations 'frustrating' MLB teams ahead of deadline Cade Smith is also a hot commodity, as his 3.07 ERA and 61 strikeouts in 41 innings would be very appealing to a team, especially since he's so cheap and under team control for a while (through 2029). Either would draw a huge return for the Guardians, and while Heyman reports the team is listening to offers, the expectation is neither will be moved at the deadline. Of the two, Clase is more likely to be traded. He'd draw more in return for Cleveland and has the All-Star, Cy Young candidate pedigree, as well as being signed through 2026 with options for $10 million in 2027 and 2028. However, regardless of who is more likely to be traded, the Guardians' willingness to listen to offers for both is noteworthy. If a team offers a deal too big to turn down, the Guardians could be parting ways with their long-time closer after five years in the Majors. MORE MLB NEWS: Padres' A.J.
