Cause of death: Beach Boys singer Brian Wilson reportedly died of respiratory arrest
Brian Wilson's cause of death has come to light, two weeks after the musician best known for shaping the sound of the Beach Boys died at age 82. Wilson died June 11 reportedly of respiratory arrest, according to his death certificate obtained and published Thursday by TMZ. The death certificate shows Wilson also died of sepsis and cystitis (inflammation of the urinary bladder). He also suffered multiple health issues — neurogenerative disorder, obstructive sleep apnea, chronic respiratory failure and chronic kidney disease — before his death. Wilson died more than a year after it was revealed he was placed under a conservatorship due to declining cognitive health in May 2024. For decades, Wilson battled mental health issues and drug addiction. A representative for Wilson did not immediately respond to The Times' request for comment on Thursday. Wilson's family announced the musician's death in a somber post shared to Facebook, Instagram and his website. 'We are at a loss for words right now.' The cause of death was not revealed at the time. His loved ones continued: 'Please respect our privacy at this time as our family is grieving. We realize we are sharing our grief with the world.' As news of Wilson's death spread, other music luminaries including Elton John, the Rolling Stones' Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood, Bruce Springsteen, and Mick Fleetwood paid tribute on social media. California Gov. Gavin Newsom also honored Wilson and his role in creating the California sound with hits including 'Surfer Girl,' 'California Girls' and 'Wouldn't It Be Nice.' 'Wilson fundamentally changed modern music, helping make the Beach Boys not only the defining American band of their era, but also the California band to this day,' Newsom said in a statement. 'He captured the mystique and magic of California, carrying it around the world and across generations.' Wilson's death certificate also reveals that he was laid to rest a week after his death at Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Memorial Park and Mortuary. Wilson died more than a year after his wife Melinda's death in January 2024. She was 77. He is survived by six children, including daughters Carnie and Wendy, who made up two-thirds of the Grammy-nominated pop vocal group Wilson Philips. He is also preceded in death by his brother Dennis, who drowned in 1983 while diving in Marina Del Rey, and Carl, his other brother, who died of lung cancer in 1998. Former obituaries editor Steve Marble contributed to this report.

News of Brian Wilson's death left bandmate Mike Love speechless, says honorary Beach Boy John Stamos
John Stamos was by Beach Boys founding member Mike Love's side when news of bandmate Brian Wilson's death on Wednesday was made public. The 'Full House' star was also the messenger who delivered the heartbreaking news to Love, Wilson's cousin-turned-longtime collaborator. 'I said, 'Mike, your cousin passed away,' and his face went blank,' Stamos, an honorary Beach Boys member, recalled to the New York Post. 'And we sat in the car for two and a half hours or so ... he didn't say one word.' Wilson, the genius behind the Beach Boys, died Wednesday at age 82. The singer's family announced his death on social media and his website, writing in a statement, 'We are at a loss for words right now.' A cause of death was not revealed, but Wilson was diagnosed with dementia and placed under a conservatorship in May 2024. Wilson, who co-founded the Beach Boys in 1961 with brothers Dennis and Carl and cousin Love, also battled mental health issues and drug addiction for decades. Stamos, 61, relived the somber moment on Thursday ahead of the Songwriters Hall of Fame induction ceremony in New York, where Love was among the newest group of inductees that included George Clinton, Rodney 'Darkchild' Jerkins and the Doobie Brothers. Though Love remained speechless after learning of Wilson's death, Stamos said, 'I knew how he was feeling.' The actor, who has performed with the Beach Boys over several decades, also spoke to the Post about Love, 84, and Wilson's relationship, noting 'they made beautiful music together.' During the Songwriters Hall of Fame ceremony, Stamos introduced Love, who paid tribute to Wilson, as 'my brother in music.' His sentiments on Thursday added to his social media tribute to Wilson on Wednesday. 'Brian Wilson wasn't just the heart of The Beach Boys—he was the soul of our sound,' Love wrote as he reminisced on the group's early days and Wilson's lasting contributions to music. Love added in his tribute: 'Our journey together was filled with moments of brilliance, heartbreak, laughter, complexity and most of all, LOVE . Like all families, we had our ups and downs. But through it all, we never stopped loving each other, and I never stopped being in awe of what he could do when he sat at a piano or his spontaneity in the studio.' Stamos was among the high-profile figures who paid tribute to Wilson on social media. Elton John, the Rolling Stones' Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood, Mick Fleetwood, Bruce Springsteen, Nancy Sinatra and California Gov. Gavin Newsom also honored Wilson. 'Wilson fundamentally changed modern music, helping make the Beach Boys not only the defining American band of their era, but also the California band to this day,' Newsom said in a statement. 'He captured the mystique and magic of California, carrying it around the world and across generations.' The Beach Boys established a quintessentially California sound with popular tracks including 'Surfer Girl,' 'California Girls' and 'Wouldn't It Be Nice.' Wilson is survived by six children, including daughters Carnie and Wendy, who made up two-thirds of the Grammy-nominated pop vocal group Wilson Phillips with the Mamas and the Papas scion Chynna Phillips. He is preceded in death by his wife, Melinda, who died in January 2024. His brother Dennis drowned in 1983 while diving in Marina Del Rey, and Carl, his other brother, died of lung cancer in 1998.

Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Love and more pay tribute to Brian Wilson
Billie Joe Armstrong has shared a previously unreleased cover of the Beach Boys ' 'I Get Around' in honor of the late Brian Wilson. The Green Day frontman shared the just-over-two-minute clip on Instagram, explaining that he recorded his rendition of the 1964 song a few years ago, but 'never got to share it.' 'One of my all time favorite songs ever,' Armstrong wrote on the post, which was shared Wednesday, June 11, the same day Wilson died at 82 years old. Wilson's family confirmed the news on social media but did not disclose his cause of death. Wilson was a founding member of Beach Boys, serving as the group's main songwriter, arranger and producer, and was responsible for hits such as 'California Girls' and 'God Only Knows.' 'We are at a loss for words right now,' a statement from Wilson's family shared on social media read. 'Please respect our privacy at this time, as our family is grieving. We realize that we are sharing our grief with the world.' The Hawthorne (Los Angeles County) native had been living under a conservatorship since May 2024 after his wife and longtime manager, Melinda Ledbetter Wilson, died. He was suffering from a major neurocognitive disorder that left him unable to care for himself or recognize some of his children. He had six children, two of whom — Carnie and Wendy — went on to form the '90s pop trio Wilson Phillips. Wilson's former Beach Boys bandmate and biological cousin Mike Love gave him a special shoutout during his speech at the Songwriters Hall of Fame ceremony on Thursday, June 12. Love was inducted along with South Bay rockers the Doobie Brothers, George Clinton, Ashley Gorley, Rodney 'Darkchild' Jerkins and Tony Macaulay. 'I especially must thank my cousin Brian Wilson,' he said while onstage at the event hosted at the Marriott Marquis Hotel in New York. 'My first cousin by blood but brother in music, together we set the stage for some of the most successful music collaborations of all times.' Earlier in the day, Beatles musician Paul McCartney expressed his own appreciation for the late musician online. 'Brian had that mysterious sense of musical genius that made his songs so achingly special,' he wrote on Instagram. 'The notes he heard in his head and passed to us were simple and brilliant at the same time.' Elton John also praised Wilson's artistry on Instagram, calling him a 'musical genius' and noting that he had 'the biggest influence' on his songwriting. Bruce Springsteen echoed the sentiment, describing Wilson as 'the most musically inventive voice in all of pop' on the social media platform. Metallica frontman James Hetfield said in an interview with the Associated Press on Thursday that Wilson is 'one of the most amazing songwriters on the planet,' citing him as a 'huge inspiration.' Even President Donald Trump, who has picked fights with several American musicians over the past few months, including Springsteen, shared a special tribute to the star. "Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys was a true Musical genius, right up there with the greatest, EVER," Trump posted

It was a moment of bittersweet vibrations. That was the mood when the Beach Boys frontman Mike Love was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame on Thursday night. Love was inducted by 'Full House' actor John Stamos, who has been an honorary Beach Boy playing drums and guitar with the band for 40 years. Celebrating Love's role in creating 'the sound of a generation' in the '60s, Stamos saluted him as 'a composer whose melodies shaped millions of dreams, including all of us in this room.' 'The man we're honoring tonight didn't just write songs. He painted a Technicolor tableau of the American dream, surfboards, radios, convertibles, speeches, babes, heartbreaks and harmonies,' he continued. 'He made the whole world want to be us, sun-kissed, carefree, full of promise and optimism. His lyrics were cinematic, set to the soundtracks of fellow Songwriters Hall of Fame inductee, Brian Wilson.' 'I was with Mike, I got off the plane, and I got the text,' he exclusively told The Post on the red carpet. 'I was like, I said, 'Mike, your cousin passed away,' and his face went blank.'
