Horse racing tips: Thursday, June 12

There is plenty of attractive racing today in the UK and Ireland and it would be easy to get carried away with selections. Instead here are three solid picks by our expert. Calum Weill's selections: NAP: Deep Water Bay (4.33, Nottingham) @ 4/5 with William Hill ⭐⭐⭐⭐ Others: Dodge City (2.05, Newbury) @ 22/1 with William Hill ⭐⭐⭐ Snow Berry (2.15, Nottingham) @ 10/3 with William Hill ⭐⭐ Odds provided by William Hill and correct at the time of writing. Stars denote strength of selection (max 5). If you already have a William Hill account and are looking for a new bookmaker to use for this week's racing, check out more free bets from the best betting sites, reviewed by our experts. 2.05, Newbury – Class 4 novice (6f ½f) As is usually the case at this time of year we have limited evidence to go on in this two-year-old event. But there is one form line that stands out. Cape Orator and DODGE CITY finished sixth and 12th respectively on debut at this venue back in May, where the seventh, 10th and 11th have won since as well as the third, 14th and 16th finishing runner-up subsequently. Despite the extra half-furlong today, we will opt for the horse that in my opinion looks more suited to today's sharp conditions on breeding, which is Dodge City. While Brian Meehan's charge finished an additional 3.5 lengths back from his opponent today in that race, he met some trouble in running and the longer price makes plenty of appeal. 2.15, Nottingham – Class 6 handicap (5f) SNOW BERRY has been chalked up as favourite after a second-place finish last time out on her return to turf at Nottingham. The seven-year-old mare had a string of underwhelming efforts on artificial surfaces over the winter bringing her rating down 4lb below her previous winning mark. She should strip fitter for her last run – and up just 2lb, there is plenty to like about this choice. Selection: Snow Berry @ 10/3 with William Hill Go to site > 4.33, Nottingham – Class 6 handicap (1m 6f) Today's nap is the Sir Mark Prescott charge DEEP WATER BAY, who will be well found in the market and has opened up at even money. This very well-bred stayer, a son of New Bay out of Galileo mare Best Friend, achieved his mark of 59 over insufficient one-mile trips. His trainer has a remarkable ability to find more in a horse when upped in trip and this gelding duly obliged, winning over 1m 4f on handicap debut, making all to triumph assertively. He can continue that form up a further two furlongs today off just 6lb more when he is due to go up 7lb in total for his success. Selection: Deep Water Bay @ 4/5 with William Hill Calum Weill 2025 horse racing P/L (starting from May 5, 2025) Star ratings explained ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - confident selection ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - strong fancy ⭐⭐⭐ - fair claims ⭐⭐ - tentative choice ⭐ - minimum confidence If you want to find more odds and offers, take a look at our list of the best betting sites and free bets Check out our list of the best casino bonuses in the UK

Horse racing tips: Friday, May 23

Just like yesterday, today's NAP comes from the opening race at Haydock and is supplemented by two selections at Goodwood, where the BetGoodwin Festival Stakes is the highlight of the card. Calum Weill's selections: Odds provided by William Hill and correct at the time of writing. Stars denote strength of selection (max 5). If you already have a William Hill account and are looking for a new bookmaker to use for this week's racing, check out more free bets from the best betting sites, reviewed by our experts. 1.50 Haydock – Class 5 Handicap (1m 2f) Thursday's NAP, Simiyaan, ran in the opening race at Haydock and was turned over narrowly by a five-year-old gelding trained by Ian Williams. Taking some pointers from that race, our selection here is SCEPTIC (NAP), another of that generation from the Williams yard. Between them, Williams' five-year-old geldings boast three wins and one second from six starts since Sunday, so there is a lot to like about this selection. This son of No Nay Never travelled well on his previous outing at Leicester (1m 2f, good), leading from the front before bowing out very tamely. So while there are risks attached over the same trip, he is worth a win-only bet at 4/1. Selection: Sceptic @ 4/1 with William Hill 2.40 Goodwood – Class 3 Handicap (2m) MR HAMPSTEAD looked very impressive last time out over course and distance, racing prominently before surging clear of the field and winning by 5½ lengths. That win followed a gelding operation so there could be more to come if the procedure has had its desired long-term effect, meaning he can shoulder a 7lb rise in the weights. He is well bred, being sired by Galileo out of a Scat Daddy mare, and could prove to be too good for this field of capable horses. 3.50 Goodwood – Listed (1m 2f) The final selection of the day is SILVER KNOTT, who is the only horse in this race carrying a 7lb penalty, imposed for his Group 2 success at Meydan back in March. That win came off the back of a 10-race stint in the US where only once he finished out of the top three, winning three Grade 2 races in the process. This globetrotter is a formidable force and can prove his class against today's opponents who include the very likeable Liberty Lane and Exoplanet, who fought on for second on his first run for nearly two years last time out on the all-weather at Kempton. Selection: Silver Knott @ 2/1 with William Hill Today's racing (Flat unless stated) Bath 1.40-5.05 Haydock 1.50-5.17 Goodwood 2.05-5.30 Worcester (NH) 4.48-8.32 Downpatrick (NH) 5.00-8.07 The Curragh 5.10-8.25 Pontefract 6.15-8.47 Calum Weill 2025 horse racing P/L Star ratings explained ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - confident selection ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - strong fancy ⭐⭐⭐ - fair claims ⭐⭐ - tentative choice ⭐ - minimum confidence

Four of those five victories came from her six outings at Newcastle, but she also visited the winner's enclosure at this venue on her penultimate start, winning a Class 5 handicap over today's trip off a mark 9lb lower than her present one. Owner Johnnie Delta Racing and trainer Jim Goldie achieved similar success in 2018 with Oriental Prince's half-sister, Oriental Lilly, who put together strings of wins early in her career. She reached a peak mark of 86 suggesting today's selection still has scope for progression off a mark of 69.

There are five horse racing meetings across England and Ireland today. Flat fixtures at Lingfield (2.02-5.20pm) and Wolverhampton (5.25-8.30) bookend the day, either side of jump cards from Fakenham (2.10-4.55), Kempton (2.22-5.05) and Limerick (3.30-7.15). Our nap, Jungle Land, returns to Wolverhampton eight days after winning over course and distance and can make light of a 5lb penalty for that success. Looking ahead to Aintree? Take a look at these Grand National free bets and the Grand National runners and riders guide that has everything you need to know, including an expert rating for each horse in the race Calum Weill's selection: If you already have a Betfair account and are looking for a new bookmaker to use for this week's racing, check out our list of the best free bets. 7.00 Wolverhampton – Class 4 Handicap (6f) Young jockey Billy Loughnane and trainer George Boughey are going to be a formidable force this Flat season and here they team up with JUNGLE LAND. The four-year-old gelding won over course and distance only eight days ago, racing prominently and staying on for a one-length success that has earned him a 5lb penalty. Many of his rivals that day came into the race in good form, so that victory can certainly be marked up and, given that it was Jungle Land's season reappearance, improvement is still expected and he is good value to follow up here.

Horse racing tips: Monday March 31

There are three horse racing meetings in England today. Wincanton (2.15-5.15pm) and Newcastle (2.30-5.00) stage jump fixtures before the only Flat action from Wolverhampton (4.55-8.30pm). Our nap is Moon Over The Sea, who bids to improve on a hat-trick of second-place finishes in a 1m 6f handicap at Wolverhampton. Looking ahead to Aintree? Take a look at these Grand National betting offers and the Grand National runners and riders guide that has everything you need to know, including an expert rating for each horse in the race Calum Weill's selection: If you already have a Betfair account and are looking for a new bookmaker to use for this week's racing, check out our list of the best free bets. 7.30, Wolverhampton – Class 6 Handicap (1m 6f) Having finished second on each of his previous three starts, bumping into big improvers and trouble in running, MOON OVER THE SEA has every chance of going one better here. Despite his consistency, his mark is only 1lb higher than the first race in that sequence – all of which were over 1m 4f – and 5lb higher than his most recent victory, which came at this venue during the competitive festive period in December. The majority of today's seven-runner field have been regularly campaigned over the winter, meaning it's unlikely that there is massive improvement to be found in any of them. Given a fair run, expect to see this gelding in with a live chance at the finish.
