'I've not been fully fit since I was 14' - Carter Vickers ready to be Celtic warrior again as he details summer surgery

The key Hoops stopper was a late arrival to the pre-season party after going under the knife to sort out a knee issue It's been no pain, no gain for Cameron Carter-Vickers for as long as he can remember. ‌ But the Celtic warrior is ready to grin and bear it again this season as the Hoops set their sights on Five-in-a-Row. ‌ Carter-Vickers was a late arrival to the pre-season party after going under the knife to sort out a knee issue but returned in Thursday's 5-1 friendly defeat to Ajax and got another run-out against Saudi side Al-Ahli last night. ‌ The surgery has done the job and the centre back is determined to get back to work. The US star has had his injury struggles over the years but is used to playing through the pain barrier. In fact, he reckons he hasn't been free of any aches since he was a teenager but it won't hold him back. Humble hero Carter-Vickers said: 'It was nice to be back out there and get 45 minutes under my belt. 'The operation went well at the start of the summer so it's been about recovering from that and coming back strong, getting fit for the games. 'I feel good right now. The surgery I had in the summer kind of sorted out a few things for me. ‌ 'It was relatively straightforward. My right knee was just kind of cleaning up some kind of fragments that had come loose, just cleaning that out and then trying to get the knee to settle back down. 'It was sore. There was a bit of stiffness and pain every now and again. 'But it wasn't too bad. ‌ 'I'm going to have to learn to get on with it now and kind of play with it. 'It's pretty normal to pick little things up throughout the season but ideally, I'd love to feel 100 percent good and feel nothing when I play. 'But realistically, that's probably not going to be the case. ‌ 'It's not going to matter to me because I'm going to keep playing to the max. 'I always feel like I'm ready to play. 'There maybe be some times you feel fully 100 percent but everyone will tell you, you're kind of always going into games where there's just a bit of tiredness and you have got a little niggle. ‌ 'When was the last time I felt 100 percent? Probably not since I was 14! 'With the amount of games you play over a long season, you're bound to kind of pick up stuff and it's just about trying to manage that and the people at the club are helping you through it. 'But every time I go out on the pitch I feel good and I'm ready to play. ‌ 'I like to think of myself as someone who's fairly reliable, a kind of introverted kind of guy. 'But I'm always willing to kind of get out there and help the team in whatever way I can.' Carter-Vickers getting back up to speed is a major bonus for Celts and boss Brendan Rodgers is also determined to strengthen his squad. ‌ Fans are getting restless for new signings but the defender is a prime example of good things coming to those who wait. The former Tottenham ace landed at Celtic Park in the final minutes of deadline day and has never looked back. ‌ He said: 'I came in late in the window. A few hours before it happened I wouldn't have expected to come up here and be at Celtic. 'It just shows you, this is my fifth season now and I've really enjoyed it and I'm looking forward to what's to come. 'As players, you focus kind of on the group that we have here and trying to build on what we have and trying to get our performances up to as good a level as we can. ‌ 'You've kind of got to trust the club and the manager that they're taking care of everything else and they'll do what they feel is necessary. 'But players coming in help build the competition within the squad and that can only push you forward as a team and help you come game day.' Carter-Vickers doesn't need any extra motivation but the prospect of the Champions League and a home World Cup in North America will get the juices flowing. ‌ But the immediate aim is to get off to a flier on Flag Day this coming weekend and he said: 'I think last year we really showed our development at that level and it's definitely somewhere we want to get back to and try to showcase what we can do again. 'The Champions League is exciting but we have a few games before the play-off and our focus will be on them. 'Every player wants to be a part of the World Cup, it's definitely exciting. 'All of the players know that it will be down to how we are performing for our clubs over the season if we want to end up playing in the World Cup. So that has to be the focus. 'My dad is from Louisiana, I've not checked yet if there are games near there yet but to be involved in a World Cup in America would be fantastic. 'It's always exciting at this time of year. We are a week away now from the first league game and that's what it's all about – getting going in competitive games and starting the season strong.'

Celtic vs Al Ahli LIVE score and goal updates from Como Cup clash in Italy

After Thursday's bruising against Ajax, Celtic will be desperate to bounce back with a win as they round off their Italian tour against Al Ahli. Brendan Rodgers' side were flying high after pre-season wins over Newcastle and Sporting Lisbon, but they were brought crashing back down to earth in Lake Como as the Dutch giants handed out a 5-1 hammering. It was a sore one to take, and while the result doesn't mean much on paper, the performance laid bare the glaring holes in Celtic's squad. Now it's about a response. Tonight's third-place shootout in the Como Cup might be a glorified friendly, but there's still pride on the line. Rodgers will shuffle the pack in the final dress rehearsal before the serious stuff begins next week. There could be a first glimpse of new Bhoy Shin Yamada if the Japanese striker's paperwork is finally cleared, while the likes of Cameron Carter-Vickers and Alistair Johnston will be looking to build fitness after returning from injury. But standing in Celtic's way are Saudi Pro League giants Al Ahli, who boast a squad dripping with quality. Riyad Mahrez, Franck Kessié and Edouard Mendy are just a few of the superstar names in their ranks. And while they're not expected to field a full-strength side, the Hoops will still be in for a stern test. Ryan McDonald Sutton: Celtic need to start spending It was an honest answer to a straightforward question. And it highlighted just where Celtic are right now. Brendan Rodgers was asked the other night about Yang Hyun-jun's future with Norwich looking to land the winger on loan. He said he can't even think about letting him go right now because Yang is a current starter. Think about that. No disrespect to the player. He's shown some positive signs he can be a decent enough squad player at Celtic. But let's be honest, if you had said a few months ago he'd be going out on loan, there wouldn't have been too many folk complaining. Yet now he's a starter. If that isn't a warning, then I don't know what is. So they can't afford to let Yang go but they could allow Nicolas Kuhn to leave without a replacement lined up? What is going on here with Celtic? Ryan McDonald Who could feature for Celtic tonight? Expect Brendan Rodgers to ring the changes. Celtic fielded arguably the strongest team they have at their disposal - minus Cameron Carter-Vickers and Alistair Johnston - in the 5-1 trouncing to Ajax. USA stopper CCV came off the bench in the second-half as he made his first appearance of the season following his comeback from injury, but looked rusty. The defender could be handed more valuable minutes tonight, perhaps from the very start. Canada right-back Alistair Johnston may also return the the fold in the final warm-up match before next week's big Premiership kick-off at home to St Mirren. Here's how we predict the Bhoys will line up: Sinisalo; Donovan, Carter-Vickers, Trusty, Inamura; Bernardo, Engels, McCowan; Forrest, Kenny, Tilio. Ryan McDonald Who are Al-Ahli? Celtic face a formidable opponent in Saudi Arabian moneybags Al-Ahli. Bossed by ex-RB Salzburg manager Matthias Jaissle, Al-Ahli are the reigning AFC Champions League holders. Star-studded Al-Ahli boast some massive names in their ranks - including Riyad Mahrez, Ivan Toney, Frank Kessie and Allan Saint-Maximin. And they've just sold former Liverpool hero Roberto Firmino to Qatar Stars League champions, Al-Sadd. So yeah, this will be a difficult test for the Hoops. Here's how Al-Ahli lined up in Wednesday's 3-1 defeat to Como: Al-Ahli: Mendy; Ibañez, Mahrez, Alex, Galeno, Eid, Demiral, Saad, Rayan, Kessié, Alla.

Carter Vickers Celtic injury latest as star sees recovery timeline set after surgery

The USA international went under the knife to solve a knee issue during the summer and has been training on his own at LXT Cameron Carter-Vickers is on course to be fit for the start of the coming campaign despite undergoing knee surgery earlier this summer. Record Sport revealed earlier this week that the American international has been left to train on his own at the club's Lennoxtown HQ while boss Brendan Rodgers has been putting the rest of his team mates through their pre-season paces. ‌ That sparked concern that Carter-Vickers might be facing another stretch on the sidelines after struggling with a long-term cartilage issue. ‌ But now we can confirm that Celtic's 27-year-old defensive linchpin did indeed go under the knife for what is being described as a 'tidy up' operation. Carter-Vickers was instructed by the club's medics to withdraw from the US international squad for a packed summer schedule of friendlies and Concacaf Gold Cup clashes, which concludes next week with a tie against Mexico. That decision was made at a time when Rangers were allowing John Souttar to delay hernia surgery to join up with Scotland for end of bounce matches against Iceland and Liechtenstein. Souttar is now racing against the clock to be fit in time for a Champions League qualifier against Panathinaikos on July 22. But, although Carter-Vickers is not yet ready to rejoin his team mates in full training and will not feature in the club's first pre-season friendly against Queens Park on Friday night or travel to Ireland to face Cork next week, Rodgers is confident of having his star defender back with the squad in days rather than weeks, ‌ A source said: 'Cameron had the issue at the end of last season so he was taken out of the internationals to have the problem cleared up. He is just about ready to begin training again.' He has been an important man since joining Celtic, initially on loan, but then permanently from Spurs, and Brendan Rodgers will be keen to keep the defender fit. The Hoops still have fellow countryman Auston Trusty available, as well as Liam Scales, both of whom featured regularly last campaign. Advertisement Stephen Welsh has returned from his loan move alongside Gustaf Lagerbielke, and Dane Murray and Maik Nawrocki are still on the books too. However, Lagerbielke and Nawrocki look to be heading to the exit door, and the Hoops have also lost regular starter Greg Taylor, meaning Celtic will likely have to bolster at the back. Kieran Tierney has returned from Arsenal, and Hayato Inamura looks set to join the Parkhead side imminently. But Carter-Vickers' fitness will be of concern to boss Brendan Rodgers, as pre season matches and Champions League qualifiers loom large for the Hoops.
