Neeraj Bawana visits wife under tight security

A tight security circle comprising more than 25 Delhi Police personnel and armed guards escorted gangster Neeraj Bawana from Tihar Jail to RLKC Hospital and Metro Heart Institute in Shadipur on Tuesday, a day after the Delhi high court granted him a six-hour custodial parole to visit his ailing wife. Neeraj Bawana after his arrest in 2015. (HT Archive) The 35-year-old gangster, who is involved in over 30 cases of murder and extortion and runs a gang from inside the jail, was only allowed to meet his wife and a doctor. Bawana, who was one of the most wanted criminals, was arrested in 2015 by the Special Cell. According to police, he had links with Fazal Ur Rehman, a close associate of gangster Dawood, and gangsters who had ties with Canada-based fugitive Arsh Dalla and Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Khalistani activist who was killed in Canada in 2023. On Monday, the high court granted Bawana custodial parole from 10am to 4pm after verifying the medical condition of his wife. On Tuesday morning, jail officials were instructed to bring Bawana out of his cell by 9.30-9.45 am. In the next 15-20 minutes, a team of 15 additional police personnel went inside the prison to take his custody. Meanwhile, more than 25 personnel were deployed on the route from the central jail to RLKC Hospital in Pandav Nagar. Bawana reached the hospital at around 10.30am, and was escorted inside the premises with videographers and armed guards around. 'We know that he has been running a gang from inside the jail. He also killed two undertrials inside a jail van when they were in judicial custody. There was also a threat to his life. He is only allowed to meet his wife and a doctor. He can't talk to anyone else,' said a senior officer of the Delhi Armed Police. Special units, Delhi Police's Third Battalion and the district police staff were also deployed to also monitor any suspicious activity. The court on Monday noted that Bawana is a 'high-risk undertrial' and granted him custodial parole on the condition that none of the family members was allowed to be around his wife in the Intensive Care Unit when he visits her. 'The Superintendent Jail is directed to make adequate security arrangements, particularly, keeping in mind the status of the petitioner (Bawana), who is a high-risk undertrial, to ensure that he is in a position to meet his ailing wife at RLKC Metro Hospital, Pandav Nagar, such custody parole, the petitioner/applicant would be permitted to meet his ailing wife and to consult the concerned doctor(s) only,' the court said in the order. According to the police, Bawana's 30-year-old wife is suffering from a severe/recurrent vision loss, excruciating headache, severe vomiting, loss of power on the right side of the hand with severe tingling and numbness of the right upper limb. Another senior officer said that Bawana had to be released since none of the couple's family members agreed to help. 'It was a love marriage and everyone was opposed to it. So, the families are not helping the couple,' he said. Meanwhile, two men were detained at the hospital at around 2.30pm under 'suspicion'. On interrogation, they said that they wanted to meet Bawana, police said. 'We detained them and sent them to the local staff who are checking their criminal records. The duo later alleged they just wanted to see how Bawana looks…' said a special cell officer, asking not to be named. At 4pm, Bawana was escorted back to Tihar jail where he was readmitted to his cell, police said

Ex-Weatherford Chief Guns for 2nd Energy SPAC on Heels of 1st

Retired Weatherford International CEO Bernard Duroc-Danner is planning a second energy-focused blank check company, Pyrophyte Acquisition Corp. II. The Houston-based special purpose acquisition corporation (SPAC) expects to raise $175 million and trade on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol 'PAIIU,' according to an S-1 filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). 'We may pursue an initial business combination in any business or industry and in any geographic region but expect to target companies that are in the energy sector,' Bernard Duroc-Danner, the retired Weatherford executive, reported in the S-1. Duroc-Danner, Pyrophyte II's CEO, and Sten Gustafson, CFO, formed the SPAC May 1. UBS Investment Bank is the lead book-running manager; the co-manager is Brookline Capital Markets, a unit of Arcadia Securities. While looking at acquisition targets, 'we intend to focus our search initially on identifying companies in the energy sector that constitute critical links in the supply chain for, and/or service, the growing segments from the full spectrum of the energy ecosystem,' Duroc-Danner wrote. 'Specifically, we seek to focus on differentiated targets that provide critical minerals and materials, equipment and/or technologies that support the span of energy solutions from traditional to renewable energy.' The company emphasized that it doesn't intend to acquire companies that are 'excessively leveraged.' The first Pyrophyte Acquisition Corp. raised $201.25 million in an October 2021 IPO. In November 2023, it announced plans to buy Canada-based Sio Silica Corp., a sand miner that was known as CanWhite Sands until January 2022. As of June 27, Pyrophyte I was 'currently in the process of completing its initial business combination with Sio Silica,' Duroc-Danner reported in the new SPAC's SEC filing. The energy veteran formed oilfield services and equipment firm EVI Inc. in 1987, which later became a part of Weatherford. The company was trading on the NASDAQ at about $50 at press time for a market cap of $3.7 billion. Duroc-Danner retired in 2016 and was named chairman emeritus. He was also chairman of oilfield services firm Grant Prideco, which was spun out of Weatherford in 2000 and bought by National Oilwell, which is now NOV Inc., in 2008 for $7.5 billion. SPAC CFO Gustafson was CEO of oilfield helicopter operator Era Group, which he spun out of Seacor Holdings in 2013. He was also a member of Saudi Arabia's steering committee to form a commercial helicopter operator in the country. More recently, he was a director at CHC Helicopter and chairman of Norway's Golden Energy Offshore. Privately held, Lafayette, Louisiana-based PHI Group, the largest Gulf Coast oilfield helicopter operator, recently withdrew its S-1 to IPO. It had been filed in October 2023. In a May 23 SEC withdrawal notice, the company said 'it has determined not to pursue the contemplated public offering at this time.' A Pyrophyte II board member, Jamie Sexton, was managing director and head of oilfield services for Lehman Brothers; a partner in private equity firm White Deer Energy; and a partner in oilfield services at energy investment-banking firm PPHB. More recently, he was director, U.S. operations, for Interra Energy Services. Currently, he is a partner and COO at Houston-based hedge fund Encore Global Management. Advisory board members are to include private equity investor Riverstone Holdings' co-founders Pierre Lapeyre and David Leuschen. Prior to forming Riverstone, Leuschen, who has led several SPACs, was founder and head of Goldman Sachs' energy and power group, while Lapeyre was managing director. Also to join the advisory board is Chris Abbate, a managing partner and co-CEO at Breakwall Capital. Previously, he was a Riverstone Holdings partner and founded and co-led Riverstone Credit Partners. Duroc-Danner reported in Pyrophyte II's S-1 that 'transitioning to novel energy solutions will require continued production from conventional and renewable sources alike.' Natural gas will 'continue to be a key component of the energy ecosystem as it addresses the challenges stemming from intermittent renewable energy solutions while meeting the massive demand for power generation with relatively lower carbon emissions,' he added. To meet overall global energy demand, 'traditional fossil-fuel processes will represent $11 trillion in investment through 2035—comprising upstream, midstream and downstream oil and gas investment—nearly doubling the $6 trillion investment from renewables.' In addition to conventional fuels, Pyrophyte II intends to look at critical minerals, industrial decarbonization, alternative energy and fuels, electrical infrastructure and energy storage. Chicago, IL – July 1, 2025 – Stocks in this week's article are Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd. AEM, NetEase Inc. NTES, Qifu Technology Inc. QFIN, UGI Corp. UGI and McKesson Corp. MCK. Dividend investing remains one of the hottest segments in the first half of 2025 amid heightened volatility and uncertainty. While U.S. stocks have been hovering near record highs, driven by optimism over trade talks, corporate earnings growth, easing inflation and momentum in artificial intelligence, geopolitics and uncertain Fed moves continue to weigh on investors' sentiment. Dividends are major sources of consistent income for investors, but they do not offer dramatic price appreciation. Stocks backed by regular dividends can reduce the volatility of a portfolio and tend to outperform in a choppy market. In particular, focusing on the growth level in this strategy leads to higher returns. Zeroing in on stocks with a history of dividend growth leads to a healthy portfolio with a greater scope of capital appreciation, as opposed to simple dividend-paying stocks or those with high yields. We have selected five dividend growth stocks — Agnico Eagle Mines Ltd., NetEase Inc., Qifu Technology Inc., UGI Corp. and McKesson Corp. — which could be solid choices for the second half. Stocks that have a strong history of dividend growth belong to mature companies, which are less susceptible to large swings in the market and thus act as a hedge against economic or political uncertainty as well as stock market volatility. At the same time, these offer downside protection with their consistent increase in payouts. Additionally, these stocks have superior fundamentals that make dividend growth a quality and promising investment for the long term. These include a sustainable business model, a long track of profitability, rising cash flows, good liquidity, a strong balance sheet and some value characteristics. Further, a history of strong dividend growth indicates that dividend increase is likely in the future. Although these stocks do not necessarily have the highest yields, they have outperformed for a longer period than the broader stock market or any other dividend-paying stock. Here are five of the 10 stocks that fit the bill: Canada-based Agnico Eagle is a gold producer with mining operations in Canada, Mexico and Finland and exploration activities in Canada, Europe, Latin America and the United States. It saw a positive earnings estimate revision of 9 cents over the past seven days for this year. The company has an estimated earnings growth rate of 48.9%. AEM currently flaunts a Zacks Rank #1 and has a Growth Score of B. You can see the complete list of today's Zacks #1 Rank stocks here. Amritsar/Chandigarh: Drug cartel with Pak, Canada links busted; 60kg heroin seized

In a joint operation with the Border Security Force (BSF) and Rajasthan cops, a Punjab Police team busted an international drug cartel and seized over 60-kg heroin near Pakistan border in Barmer, officials said on Monday. In February, 30kg of heroin was recovered by Amritsar rural police after a smuggler was arrested. (HT photo for representation) This is the second biggest drug seizure made by Punjab Police this year. On May 16, Tarn Taran police had recovered 85kg of heroin after busting a narco-smuggling module controlled by Pakistan's Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). The operation carried out by Amritsar police commissionerate led to the arrest of at least nine persons, including smugglers, traffickers and hawala operators from Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan and Jammu & Kashmir, said director general of police (DGP) Gaurav Yadav. The DGP said preliminary investigations have revealed that the drug cartel was being operated by Pakistan-based smuggler Tanveer Shah and Canada-based smuggler Joban Kaler with the help of local kingpin Gursahib Singh, who was already lodged in Goindwal Sahib Jail but continued to run the network from inside the jail using a mobile phone. His phone was recovered with the help of jail authorities and his production warrant was obtained for deeper probe into Canada-Pakistan linkages, he said. Those arrested were identified as Gagandeep Singh alias Gagan (23), Jashanpreet Singh alias Jashan (20), Gursahib Singh (25), Kulwinder Singh, all from Amritsar, Rajeev Panjgotra alias Rajveer (29), Somnath (62), Prashotam Singh alias Kala, Rajinder Kaur, 42, all J&K residents, and a hawala operator. 'A case FIR No. 118 dated 17/06/2025 under sections 21-B, 21-C, 27-B and 29 of NDPS Act has been registered at the Chheharta police station,' police commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar told reporters in Amritsar. Sharing more details, Bhullar said the operation began after Gursahib Singh was arrested last month with 1 kg heroin from Chheharta. Despite being in jail, Gursahib operated a smuggling network via his nephew Jashanpreet Singh and associate Gagandeep Singh, who were arrested with 102 gm heroin. Their interrogation led to recovery of 60- kg heroin consignment in Barmer, he added. Bhullar said during investigation, the hawala network used for routing drug money was also unearthed with the arrest of an operator. 'The operation was conducted under the supervision of DCP (D) City Ravinderpal Singh, ADCP (D) Jagbinder Singh, ADCP-2 Harpal Singh, ACP (D) Yadwinder Singh, ACP West Shivdarshan Singh, SHO Chheharta Vinod Sharma, CIA-1 incharge Amolakdeep Singh and CIA-2 incharge Ravi Kumar', said Bhullar. Bhullar said the probe also revealed that drugs were being smuggled from across the Indo-Pak border and routed through Rajasthan to Punjab, with further local distribution channels. Further working on backward linkages five more accused associated with Tanveer Shah of Pakistan were also identified and raids are being conducted to nab them, he said. In February, 30kg of heroin was recovered by Amritsar rural police after a smuggler was arrested. In October 2024, Punjab Police recovered 105kg of heroin in Amritsar by busting a cross-border smuggling racket after arresting two accomplices of a Turkey-based drug smuggler, Navpreet Singh, alias Nav Bhullar. As part of state government's 'Yudh Nashian Virudh' campaign that entered the 121st day, Punjab Police have so far arrested 19,801 drug smugglers.
