Cork director Brendan Canty 'floored' by top prize at Galway Film Fleadh for feature debut Christy
Brendan Canty, the director of the acclaimed new Irish film Christy, has told RTÉ Entertainment he is "floored" by the response to the coming-of-age drama and its Best Irish Film win at the Galway Film Fleadh last weekend. Written by Alan O'Gorman, Christy stars newcomer Danny Power (The Young Offenders) alongside Diarmuid Noyes (Pure Mule: The Last Weeken d, Five Minutes of Heaven). The film follows troubled teenager Christy (Power) after he is thrown out of his foster home and moves in with his estranged brother Shane (Noyes) and his young family on Cork's northside. Watch: The trailer for Christy Christy opens in cinemas on 29 August. "I always knew the home screening would be something special, but I wasn't prepared for just how powerful it would be," Cork director Canty told RTÉ Entertainment after his feature debut's Irish premiere at the Galway Film Fleadh earlier this month. "It was honestly one of the most unforgettable moments of my life. To then go on and win - that was the cherry on top." "Even before the screening, during our panel talk, I could feel it - the audience were really hanging on our every word," he continued. "There was such a buzz in the room. And when the film played, the atmosphere was full of warmth and genuine love. You could sense that people were rooting for it, and that kind of support really floored me." Christy 's cast includes Emma Willis (Vikings, The Young Offenders, Dating Amber), Alison Oliver (Saltburn, Conversations with Friends), Chris Walley (Bodkin, The Young Offenders), and Helen Behan (The Virtues, This Is England '90). The film also features members of The Kabin Studio, a Cork-based community arts collective known for its work in hip-hop and spoken word, and whose Kabin Crew enjoyed a viral hit last summer with The Spark, recorded in collaboration with Lisdoonvarna Crew. The Dublin-based Sleeper Films is among the producers of Christy, which has been funded by Fís Éireann/Screen Ireland and BBC Film. Earlier this year, Christy won the Grand Prix of the Generation 14plus International Jury at the Berlin International Film Festival. Now, director Canty is relishing an Irish cinema release after his debut's success at the Galway Film Fleadh. "I've always believed in this film - the community behind it, the heart that went into it - but seeing how it connected with an Irish audience has made me even more sure," he said. "It's a deeply Irish film, full of hope, humour, and heart. I think it'll really land with people when it hits cinemas." ESPN radio host dissects Dolphins' pressure entering 2025 season
The 2025 NFL season could very well be make-or-break for a number of key figures in the Miami Dolphins' organization. Certainly, it feels as though that's the case for head coach Mike McDaniel. McDaniel guided the Dolphins to playoff appearances in each of his first two seasons at the helm, but Miami couldn't advance beyond the Wild Card round in either of those postseason trips. Then, the Dolphins slumped back to an 8-9 finish a season ago and missed the playoffs entirely. After an offseason marked by trade uncertainties surrounding two of the franchise's biggest stars in cornerback Jalen Ramsey and in tight end Jonnu Smith, the heat is cranking up on Dolphins general manager Chris Grier as well. ESPN radio host Chris Canty dissected just how much pressure is on the Dolphins heading into this 2025 campaign on his morning show, "Unsportsmanlike." "They have to have some shown improvement. It's time. They've been there long enough to establish their program. They've invested in Tua. They gave him the contract. They committed to him even though he only had one full season healthy. No playoff wins to show for it. "It's time for Mike McDaniel to show that this way of playing football can have success when it matters most in the NFL. This philosophy of pace and space, similar to what we talk about with NBA teams, playing basketball on grass, you have to show that that ends up leading to being able to have success once you get into the playoffs, being able to consistently get to the postseason. And so, I am skeptical of whether or not they're going to be able to do that. Again, I struggle to have faith in the Miami Dolphins because of what I've seen. You have to look at the context, you have to look at the history around it. You have an oft-injured quarterback in a style of play that doesn't necessarily lend itself to being able to have success," Canty said. Canty's critiques of the Dolphins are criticisms that plenty of Miami fans share. While it's difficult to evaluate the Dolphins minus quarterback Tua Tagovailoa for large stretches of last season, the organization's decision makers will bear the brunt of the backlash for the franchise's shortcomings if Tagovailoa once again proves injury-prone in 2025.

MSU target, 3-star OL Khalief Canty commits to Missouri over Spartans
Khalief Canty Jr. commits to # off his official visit, the Rivals250 IOL talked about the Tigers and offensive line coach Brandon Jones: Michigan State football got some unfortunate news on the recruiting trail on Tuesday. One of the top remaining targets on the Spartans' 2026 recruiting board has announced his commitment to an SEC school over Michigan State. Khalief Canty of Detroit made it official on Tuesday by announcing his commitment to Missouri over Michigan State and others. Canty is a high-end three-star offensive lineman, with a recruiting rating of 88.98 in the 247Sports composite system. He ranks as the No. 34 interior offensive lineman nationally and is listed as the No. 8 player from Michigan in 247Sports' rankings for the 2026 class. Canty held offers from 20 schools, including some of the game's biggest programs such as Alabama, Auburn, Michigan, Penn State, Tennessee and Texas A&M. But in the end, his recruitment came down to the Spartans and the Tigers, with Missouri apparently locking up his commitment during his official visit there this past weekend. This is a tough one for the Spartans since Canty is an in-state prospect that they had prioritized recently and had seemed to make up enough ground to earn his commitment. With Canty now off the board, we will need to keep our eyes on fellow three-star offensive lineman Adrian Hamilton of Washington, D.C. He is another priority lineman prospect for the Spartans, and is set to announce his commitment next week on July 5. MSU priority target OL Khalief Canty pushes back commitment, crystal ball entered
There are a pair of notable updates in the recruitment for a big-time in-state prospect that Michigan State is battling it out for in the 2026 class. Khalief Canty of Detroit has reportedly shifted his commitment announcement from today to tomorrow, according to 247Sports' Sean Williams. The other update related to Canty is more notable, as he is now predicted to commit to Missouri over Michigan State, according to a newly logged crystal ball prediction on 247Sports. Michigan State has made a late push for Canty's commitment, turning it into a two-team battle with Missouri. He visited Missouri this past weekend and it appears that final push from the Tigers could be the difference in his recruitment. Canty is expected to announce his college decision at 11:30 a.m. ET on Tuesday. Stay with Spartans Wire for additional coverage on this important recruiting battle. Michigan State Hopes To Keep 3-Star Recruiting Prospect Khalief Canty at Home
Michigan State Hopes To Keep 3-Star Recruiting Prospect Khalief Canty at Home originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Michigan State head coach Jonathan Smith and his Spartans have only been able to break the top 550 overall in the class of 2026 recruits with No. 260 overall quarterback Kayd Coffman. Offensive lineman Khalief Canty can change that. Advertisement The 6'5, 305-pound lineman from Detroit, Mich. announced on June 11 that he will be announcing his commitment on June 23. Out of the 20 offers Canty received, Michigan State is in the heat of the decision-making alongside Missouri and North Carolina. He visited UNC on April 4 and has visits lined up with the Spartans and Tigers on June 13 and 20, respectively. So far, Michigan State has added 10 class of 2026 recruits to its roster with the defensive side of the ball heating up in terms of commits. Despite finding better footing in recruitment during the official visit season, the Spartans are still falling behind compared to their Big Ten rivals, like No. 1 USC and No. 2 Ohio State. Advertisement The addition of Canty, a 3-star recruit ranked No. 429 overall, would give Michigan State a much needed boost and likely a new starter on the field his freshman year. Michigan State's offense looks on from the sidelineNick King/Lansing State Journal/USA TODAY NETWORK via Imagn Images Primary recruiter and offensive line coach Jim Michalczik visited Canty at Cass Technical High School with defensive coordinator Joe Rossi and assistant head coach Keith Bhonapha in hopes of keeping the Michigan native at home. The journey to land Canty started back in December 2022 when a Michigan State offer was first extended. Since then, he visited in the summer of 2024 and has narrowed his 20-offer decision down with the Spartans in mind. When National Signing Day in February rolls around, it would have been a four-year journey to lock down the offensive tackle. Advertisement But the appeal of Michigan State goes beyond the staff. Former running back Jaren Mangham, wide receiver Sebastian brown, and cornerback Kalon Gervin among others played for the Spartans after graduating from Cass Tech. Whether Michigan State will benefit from home advantage will be determined on June 23.
