ESPN radio host dissects Dolphins' pressure entering 2025 season

USA Today6 hours ago
The 2025 NFL season could very well be make-or-break for a number of key figures in the Miami Dolphins' organization.
Certainly, it feels as though that's the case for head coach Mike McDaniel. McDaniel guided the Dolphins to playoff appearances in each of his first two seasons at the helm, but Miami couldn't advance beyond the Wild Card round in either of those postseason trips. Then, the Dolphins slumped back to an 8-9 finish a season ago and missed the playoffs entirely.
After an offseason marked by trade uncertainties surrounding two of the franchise's biggest stars in cornerback Jalen Ramsey and in tight end Jonnu Smith, the heat is cranking up on Dolphins general manager Chris Grier as well.
ESPN radio host Chris Canty dissected just how much pressure is on the Dolphins heading into this 2025 campaign on his morning show, "Unsportsmanlike."
"They have to have some shown improvement. It's time. They've been there long enough to establish their program. They've invested in Tua. They gave him the contract. They committed to him even though he only had one full season healthy. No playoff wins to show for it.
"It's time for Mike McDaniel to show that this way of playing football can have success when it matters most in the NFL. This philosophy of pace and space, similar to what we talk about with NBA teams, playing basketball on grass, you have to show that that ends up leading to being able to have success once you get into the playoffs, being able to consistently get to the postseason. And so, I am skeptical of whether or not they're going to be able to do that. Again, I struggle to have faith in the Miami Dolphins because of what I've seen. You have to look at the context, you have to look at the history around it. You have an oft-injured quarterback in a style of play that doesn't necessarily lend itself to being able to have success," Canty said.
Canty's critiques of the Dolphins are criticisms that plenty of Miami fans share.
While it's difficult to evaluate the Dolphins minus quarterback Tua Tagovailoa for large stretches of last season, the organization's decision makers will bear the brunt of the backlash for the franchise's shortcomings if Tagovailoa once again proves injury-prone in 2025.

Fantasy football: Arizona Cardinals WR Marvin Harrison Jr. named breakout player

ESPN's fantasy staff compiled their top sleepers, busts and breakout players, including Marvin Harrison Jr. As we approach the end of the summer, fantasy owners will be putting together their wish lists for fantasy drafts. They seek to land reliable production from players and hope to find value additions and avoid fantasy busts. ESPN's fantasy staff put together a list, giving their potential sleepers, busts and breakout players. Arizona Cardinals receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. was included as a breakout player. Fantasy breakout player: Cardinals WR Marvin Harrison Jr. From Stephania Bell: Many expected Harrison to emerge on the pro scene with a bang, but his underwhelming rookie season landed more like a thud. After scoring four touchdowns in his first four games, Harrison scored only four more the rest of the season, and his catch percentage (53.4%) was lowest among all rookie wide receivers. But his talent and pedigree are unchanged and lessons learned from Year 1 could go a long way toward making 2025 his breakout season. Plus, outside of Trey McBride, he faces little competition for targets. There has been a buzz all offseason about Harrison breaking out this coming season. His rookie season wasn't bad, but it certainly didn't meet lofty expectations. Harrison is noticeably bigger physically. He enters his second NFL season. He will have a lot of targets. He is a logical choice as a breakout player. Get more Cardinals and NFL coverage from Cards Wire's Jess Root and others by listening to the latest on the Rise Up, See Red podcast. Kevin Love Breaks Silence After Miami Heat Trade

Kevin Love Breaks Silence After Miami Heat Trade originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Miami Heat, Utah Jazz and Los Angeles Clippers made a three-team trade on Monday centered around multiple role players. Advertisement The Heat will receive veteran guard Norman Powell from the Clippers, while Los Angeles will receive John Collins from the Jazz, and Utah gets veteran forwards Kevin Love and Kyle Anderson and a 2027 second-round pick from the Clippers, according to NBA insider Shams Charania. The deal might have given each team more depth and leadership. Meanwhile, Love is entering his 18th season in the NBA after averaging 5.3 points and 4.1 rebounds per game last season with Miami. Furthermore, the deal benefits Miami because they are under the first apron of the league luxury tax at $195.9 million, while the tax threshold is $187.8 million, according to ESPN writer Bobby Marks. Advertisement Miami's issue was that since they exceeded the tax threshold and entered the first apron, they had to deal with heavy restrictions, such as not being able to make sign-and-trade deals and signing players off of waivers. However, Love was on a two-year contract worth $8 million, which is why trading him was viewed as beneficial by Marks who took the Heat's financial situation into account because they have used the expanded trade player exception to add Powell. However, the Heat's decision might have puzzled Love, who shared a humorous reaction to the trade on X. 'Never thought I'd be a math problem,' he wrote. 'Welcome to the NBA.' Advertisement With Love joining the Jazz, he could add more depth and serve as a mentor for many of their younger players such as Walker Kessler and Ace Bailey. Meanwhile, Powell is joining a Heat roster composed of All-Stars Bam Adebayo and Tyler Herro. Collins, on the other hand, is joining the Clippers, who are led by All-Star veterans James Harden and Kawhi Leonard. Tyler Herro's Trade Value Revealed Amid Swirling Offseason Rumors

Tyler Herro's Trade Value Revealed Amid Swirling Offseason Rumors originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Miami Heat shook things up on Monday morning when the franchise acquired fringe All-Star guard Norman Powell from the Los Angeles Clippers by way of a blockbuster 3-team trade including the Utah Jazz, according to ESPN's Shams Charania. Advertisement The Clippers brought in Utah's star forward John Collins and the Jazz collected second-round draft capital attached to the Heat's Kevin Love and Kyle Anderson. Powell could make a world of difference for the Heat as a go-to scoring option in the backcourt to pair with the team's first-time All-Star Tyler Herro next season, but it appears as though the 25-year-old has yet to escape trade rumors, himself. While discussing the savvy scoring guard's potential value on the trade market in the wake of the Orlando Magic's surprising transaction to land the Memphis Grizzlies' Desmond Bane, the Miami Herald's Barry Jackson made an intriguing assertion. Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro reacts after scoring against the Philadelphia 76ers at Wells Fargo Ross-Imagn Images "Bane considered more of 2 way player," Jackson shared via X on Monday. Advertisement "Tyler could net 2 Firsts potentially." The ex-Grizzlies guard Bane was dealt to the Magic on June 15 for a gargantuan haul, as the Grizzlies landed Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Cole Anthony, four unprotected first-round picks and a first-round pick swap, shaking up the market in the process. Surprisingly enough, Jackson believes that the Heat would only land a couple of first-round draft selections in exchange for Herro, who contributed 23.9 points, 5.5 assists and 5.2 rebounds on an impressive 56.3% effective field goal percentage in 2024-25. Bane wasn't too shabby during his final season with the Grizzlies, as the 27-year-old guard averaged 19.2 points and 5.3 assists while knocking down 39.2% of his 6.1 attempts from three-point range. Advertisement If the Heat were to ever consider shipping Herro away, team president Pat Riley and the franchise's front office would work tirelessly to net as many draft selections in return for the rising star as possible, or a proven talent that would keep the team competitive.
