Sailing into disaster: how the 'Trainwreck: Poop Cruise' became a holiday horror
The 2013 Carnival Triumph cruise, now Carnival Sunrise, which descended into chaos after the toilets gave up in the middle of the sea Image: X/@CruiseIndustry This documentary is not for the faint-hearted, and when I say that, I mean it. If you're easily grossed out, then maybe stick to a cooking show, because "Trainwreck: Poop Cruise" is exactly what it sounds like, a holiday that turned into a s*** show. What starts as a luxury cruise turns into a stinking, sewage-filled disaster that unlocks a fear I didn't even know I had. When most people think of cruise holidays, they picture cocktails on sun loungers, that corny "Titanic" pose with your partner at the bow, and overly friendly staff offering you a smile at every turn. It's supposed to be endless sunshine, buffets big enough to feed a small country, lots of sex apparently and just the right amount of chaos at the karaoke bar. Cruises are often sold as floating hotels, clean, safe, self-contained little worlds on water. But this ship? This was not that. The Carnival Triumph, which held over 4 100 people, was meant to take passengers on a two-day trip. Easy stuff, right? Wrong. Just as people were getting into their holiday groove, sipping daiquiris and applying their third layer of sunscreen and coming off a babalas (hangover), a fire broke out in the engine room. Just darkness. Total blackout. And here's where it gets bad – like, poo floating down the hallway bad. The fire knocked out the ship's entire electrical system. That meant no flushing toilets, no aircon, no lights, no proper food prep and no communication. While we might be used to loadshedding here in South Africa, this was in the middle of the sea. Loadshedding with nowhere to run. So imagine you're stranded, it's 35°C inside your tiny room, you can't flush the loo, and you're told to relieve yourself in a red plastic bag. And that's not even the worst part - the sewage started spilling. It seeped through toilets, into rooms, down hallways, turning the ship into a floating latrine. It wasn't just gross, it was dangerous. We're talking real health risks, such as bacterial infections, respiratory issues, and the kind of airborne filth that no one signed up for. It's a miracle more people didn't end up in the hospital. The documentary brings in real accounts from the passengers, which are both fascinating and grim. One woman came to celebrate her bachelorette, a dad and daughter were there trying to reconnect after a divorce, and one guy just wanted to impress his future father-in-law. Instead, they all ended up with front-row seats to an actual human biohazard zone. Sleeping indoors became impossible because of the heat and the stench, so many dragged mattresses outside and created makeshift camps on the deck. Image: X/@erickmramz As passengers recall, panic set in when the once chirpy cruise director's voice came through the speakers with a completely different tone. The ship's crew handed out red bags for bowel movements and urged people to "cooperate". And while most passengers did, there's no preparing yourself for using a plastic bag for a number two, then having to sleep next to it in a room hotter than a Joburg taxi on a summer afternoon. To make things worse, with no refrigeration, food started to spoil. Passengers began hoarding non-perishables like biscuits and apples. Sleeping indoors became impossible because of the heat and the stench, so many dragged mattresses outside and created makeshift camps on the deck labelled 'tent city'. That's when this so-called holiday really hit rock bottom. And then the weather said, 'You thought I was done?' Out of nowhere, the sea got rough. As tugboats tried to tow the dead ship back to land, waves rocked the vessel, and all that raw sewage. Yes, the same one people were dodging in the halls came flooding back up, and the looks on passengers' faces told you everything you needed to know. No one knew whether to cry, gag or pray. Eventually, after days of this hellish situation, the ship was dragged to shore. Carnival's apology package included a full refund, transport, $500 (8 889,36 South African Rand) and - wait for it - a free cruise. The audacity. As if any of those passengers would ever willingly set foot on another floating tin can again. This documentary is revolting and ridiculous, but you can't stop watching. Not just because of the mess (though that's a big part of it), but because you genuinely feel for these people. One minute they were dancing under the sun, the next they were rationing crackers and dodging faeces. Would I get on a cruise after this? Not even if it was hosted by Beyoncé and catered by Jamie Oliver. A holiday should never involve red biohazard bags. Ever. "Trainwreck: Poop Cruise" is filthy, frantic and almost unbelievable. A holiday that spiralled into chaos and a documentary that'll haunt your next booking search. "Trainwreck: Poop Cruise" is now streaming on Netflix. *** solid and enjoyable, though not groundbreaking.

'Raw sewage leaked all over' as extent of 'poop cruise' disaster uncovered
A new Netflix documentary has captured the horrors on-board the ship dubbed the 'poop cruise' Holidaymakers on a lavish cruise liner were plunged into a real-life horror when a blaze cut off power, leaving them adrift in the Gulf of Mexico. The ill-fated 2013 journey spiralled into chaos as the fire damaged electrical systems, immobilising the vessel and leaving it without lights, air conditioning, and even working loos. This ordeal is now the focus of Trainwreck: Poop Cruise, a brand-new Netflix documentary released yesterday (June 24), which gives viewers a harrowing glimpse into the experiences of the Carnival Triumph's passengers. The preview hints at the chaos: "Soon raw sewage leaks out all over the ship, food supplies start dwindling and passengers begin to revolt. As the cruise company races to control the fallout, a media frenzy ensues. Soon everyone is talking about 'The Poop Cruise'." Those intrigued by the incident and the boat featured in this new documentary may wonder what became of the ship. Some may even be brave enough to contemplate boarding her for a trip, reports Surrey Live. But, is it still possible to book a holiday on the Carnival Triumph? In line with standard practice for high-end cruise ships, the Carnival Triumph experienced a significant refurbishment and, as of 2019, has been navigating the seas with a new identity: Carnival Sunrise. Still a favourite among cruisers, this celebrated liner remains operational throughout The Bahamas and the Caribbean with a lots of scheduled voyages for this year lined up, including a four-day trip to The Bahamas from Miami in November. A spot in an inside cabin will cost travellers about $284 each, while those willing to splash out for a fancier space can expect to fork over up to $836 for a sumptuous luxury suite. TripAdvisor has seen recent guests sharing their experiences on-board. One said: "For an older ship, it's still a lot of fun - just temper your expectations. We stayed in a balcony cabin on deck 8. Yes, the bathroom looks outdated with its bright blue sink and shower curtain - but it's part of the charm." Another traveller gushed said: "I loved every minute of being on the ship. The food and shows were amazing... It was everything I wanted and more!". In the wake of the fire incident aboard Carnival Triumph and the subsequent scrutiny, Gerry Cahill, then the president and CEO of Carnival Cruise Lines, assured holidaymakers that such a calamity would "not happen again", as he announced an inquiry into the cause of the blaze. In response to the forthcoming Poop Cruise documentary, Carnival released a statement to Surrey Live's Screen Time reporters, saying: "The Carnival Triumph incident over 12 years ago was a teachable moment for the entire cruise industry. "A thorough investigation following the incident revealed a design vulnerability which was corrected and led Carnival Cruise Line to invest more than $500 million across our entire fleet in comprehensive fire prevention and suppression, improved redundancy, and enhanced management systems, all in support of our commitment to robust safety standards. "This is in addition to our vigorous Health, Environmental, Safety and Security (HESS) protocols that guide the entire Carnival Corporation fleet as we maintain our commitment to industry leadership in this area. "We are proud of the fact that since 2013 over 53 million guests have enjoyed safe and memorable vacations with us, and we will continue to operate to these high standards."

Carnival Cruise Line bans more passengers after another brawl
Carnival Cruise Line bans more passengers after another brawl originally appeared on Come Cruise With Me. As Carnival Cruise Line doubles down on its commitment to safety and security for the busy summer cruise season, its security teams are showing passengers just how seriously the cruise line takes its 'zero tolerance' policy for disruptive onboard behavior. Carnival is now placing a letter inside every stateroom at the start of every cruise that reinforces its 'Have Fun, Be Safe' guidelines from the cruise line's code of conduct. Essentially, the letter warns passengers to behave or get banned.'Any guest who violates these policies or whose conduct affects the comfort, enjoyment, safety or well-being of other guests and crew will be fined, disembarked at their own expense, and banned from sailing on Carnival in the future,' the letter emphasizes. It didn't take long for one Carnival cruise ship's security team to have to prove how serious they were about that warning. A brawl broke out on the Lido deck during a Bahamas cruise, continuing a trend in violent altercations among cruise passengers. Doug Parker shared details on the latest onboard fight, and other cruise news including how the quick actions of a Royal Caribbean crew member saved passengers from injury, on the June 10th edition of Cruise News This is Cruise News Today with Doug Parker. Good morning, here's your cruise news for Tuesday, June 10th. A brawl broke out aboard Carnival Sunrise over the weekend as the ship sailed from Half Moon Key in The Bahamas. Yeah, video shows multiple passengers throwing chairs and fists on the Lido near the pizzeria in the back of the ship. Now Carnival — their security team — quickly intervened to de-escalate the situation following its strict zero tolerance policy. Carnival confirmed that the passengers involved are now permanently banned from sailing with the cruise line. Recently, Carnival placed letters in the staterooms fleetwide outlining its 'Have Fun, Be Safe' rules and by a crew member; yeah, a large tempered glass window in the Coastal Kitchen on Royal Caribbean Symphony of the Seas suddenly busted, sending thousands of small shards of glass onto the pool deck. Now, no passengers were injured and this is thanks to a sharp-eyed waiter, Nitin Kumar, [who] sprinted to warn guests below just seconds before the glass shattered and preventing serious harm. Crew members cordoned off the area, drained the pool, cleaned up the debris, and replaced the panel before the ship continued from Port Canaveral to The Bahamas. Now, a guest on board told Cruise News Today that the incident occurred as the ship was maneuvering at Port Canaveral. The guest was also told that the glass likely busted due to pressure and vibration. Glad everyone was Carnival is testing a new Express Dining option aboard the Carnival Vista, designed for passengers on the 'Your Time' Dining plan who prefer a faster-paced meal. The streamlined service is located in a designated section of the Horizon dining room and promises a three-course meal in under 45 minutes compared to the usual 90 Ambassador John Heald emphasized this is only a controlled test saying, quote: 'This is only a test, a test with a capital T.' The option is currently limited to guests sailing on Carnival Vista using 'Your Time' Dining. And cruise stocks had a little movement on Monday. Carnival Corporation: 24.21, Royal Caribbean: 273.99, Norwegian: 19.59, and Viking: 48.88.
