Versatile 2nd-year DB named Panthers' 'biggest surprise player' heading into 2025 season

Wide receiver Xavier Legette may not be the only breakout candidate of the Carolina Panthers' 2024 draft class. ESPN's NFL Nation crew recently named the biggest surprise player for each team at this point of the offseason. David Newton took on the Panthers, and offered up second-year defensive back Chau Smith-Wade. Newton writes: It wasn't just obvious to sideline observers, it was obvious to teammates that the 2024 fifth-round pick out of Washington State had a stellar offseason and will be a factor in 2025. "Man, I think he's been the most impressive player,'' Pro Bowl cornerback Jaycee Horn said. Smith-Wade's ability to play corner, nickel and safety makes him valuable to a young defense trying to rebuild after finishing last in the NFL a year ago. "Chau took advantage of an opportunity,'' coach Dave Canales said. "He made tackles. He had an opportunity on an interception, and he made it.'' Smith-Wade may have quite an opportunity ahead of him in this Carolina secondary, which is rather thin outside the likes of cornerbacks Jaycee Horn and Mike Jackson and safety Tre'von Moehrig. The unit's current depth is largely built off of young and unproven commodities—including Shemar Bartholomew, Akayleb Evans, MJ Devonshire, Demani Richardson, 2025 fourth-round pick Lathan Ransom and six undrafted rookies. Positional versatility could also play to the advantage of Smith-Wade—who, as Newton noted, can line up at three different spots for the Panthers. But most of his work, like it did in his rookie campaign, will probably come from the slot—where he recorded 228 of his 299 defensive snaps. 2024 saw Smith-Wade finish up with 39 combined tackles, an interception and a forced fumble over 14 games. It's not about a flashy new signing or a viral play in practice. Instead, the players' comments came from one of the team's own players, someone who has been around a while and knows the struggle. As the 2025 NFL season approaches, Chuba Hubbard's comments have created quite the stir. And it wasn't a comment that was whispered or hidden. It was loud, confident, and honest. Now fans are curious. What exactly was said, who said it, and why now? Chuba Hubbard makes big statement about the Carolina Panthers' Super Bowl hopes During a media session that he attended in Charlotte, North Carolina. On Thursday, June 17, 2025, Carolina Panthers running back Chuba Hubbard was able to discuss how he feels entering the upcoming season. He did not shy away from it. Is Xavier Legette's steamy kiss with GloRilla a PR stunt or a real love story in the making?

Xavier Legette is rumored to be dating Grammy-nominated rapper GloRilla (Getty Images) NFL wide receiver Xavier Legette is used to making headlines with his performance on the field, but lately, it's his off-field moves that have fans buzzing. The Carolina Panthers' rising star has stirred up major attention after appearing as rapper GloRilla's love interest in her latest music video 'Typa. ' From their sultry bedroom scenes to the chemistry they radiated on camera, fans are left wondering—are these two simply collaborators, or is there something more? What's really going on between Xavier Legette and GloRilla after that passionate on-screen kiss? Xavier Legette, known for his Southern charm, viral accent, and unapologetically bold style, isn't new to the social media spotlight. But this time, it's not about his unique personality or his love for raccoons—yes, really—it's about the steamy visuals shared with the Grammy-nominated rapper. Featured on the cover art of 'Typa,' Legette is seen getting extremely close with GloRilla, setting the tone for a music video that's intimate, eye-catching, and loaded with relationship rumors. GloRilla – Typa (Official Music Video) In the video, which dropped Friday morning, the 24-year-old NFL wideout and the 'Tomorrow' hitmaker take their roles beyond surface-level flirtation. At one point, GloRilla, clad in white lingerie, shares a passionate kiss with a shirtless Legette in what looks like a heated bedroom rendezvous. This scene—arguably the most talked-about part—has viewers speculating whether the duo's chemistry is strictly professional or crossing into something personal. Adding more intrigue to the storyline is R&B icon Keyshia Cole, who makes a cameo during a mid-video conversation with GloRilla. Given that 'Typa' samples Cole's classic track 'Love,' her presence adds nostalgic weight and another layer of authenticity to the video. But for many, it's Legette and GloRilla who have stolen the show. What has added fuel to the romantic speculation is the fact that neither GloRilla nor Legette has publicly addressed the nature of their relationship. Legette, who just wrapped a stellar rookie season with 49 receptions, nearly 500 receiving yards, and four touchdowns, has kept his personal life under wraps since his 2024 draft into the NFL. Similarly, GloRilla has rarely let fans in on her private affairs—until now. 'The lyrics of 'Typa' talk about her love for a country man with, uh, other features (just listen for yourself),' which makes Legette a fitting choice for the role. Whether this is a savvy PR move blending music and sports for mutual clout, or the beginning of something genuine, remains to be seen. Either way, it's one of the most talked-about crossovers of the year. So, is it all a calculated move or the spark of something real? As fans wait for confirmation—serious dating rumors or just another collaboration? Panthers part ways with legend's son, sign familiar name at WR

Panthers part ways with legend's son, sign familiar name at WR The Carolina Panthers' first run with their second Muhsin Muhammad has already come to an end. As announced on Tuesday afternoon, the team has waived-injured wide receiver Muhsin "Moose" Muhammad III, the son of franchise great Muhsin Muhammad. Muhammad signed with the Panthers as an undrafted free agent out of Texas A&M University at the end of April. Little "Moose," a Charlotte, N.C. native, played for the Aggies from 2020 to 2024. The 6-foot-1, 195-pounder tallied 81 receptions for 1,163 yards and 12 touchdowns over his five collegiate seasons. His father, Muhsin, suited up with the Panthers for 11 of his 14 NFL seasons. He is the franchise's second all-time leading receiver and one of eight members of the organization's Hall of Honor. Taking Muhammad's place on the roster will be fellow wideout T.J. Luther. Luther first joined the Panthers as a member of their practice squad this past December. Follow @ThePanthersWire on Twitter/X for more Panthers content.

This 2nd-year WR was named the Panthers' most underrated player heading into 2025 season

This 2nd-year WR was named the Panthers' most underrated player heading into 2025 season The most promising second-year wide receiver on the Carolina Panthers' roster may not even be the one they took in the first round of the 2024 NFL draft. Heck, this guy didn't even get drafted. Pro Football Focus analyst Jonathon Macri recently named the most underrated player for each team heading into the 2025 season. He tabs Jalen Coker for the Panthers, who might've found themselves quite a gem right after last year's selection process. Macri writes: The Panthers spent a first-round pick on wide receiver Xavier Legette last offseason and only scooped up Coker as an undrafted free agent. The expectation for Legette to be the most effective receiver wasn't unreasonable, though Coker consistently looked like the better option in 2024. He ranked fourth among qualifying rookie wide receivers in yards per route run (1.72) on the year. Coker finished with a 73.8 PFF receiving grade, which was also a top-five mark among rookie receivers. He delivered 478 receiving yards on just 45 targets — just over half as many targets as Legette, who finished with a 59.4 PFF receiving grade and 497 yards. Coker also averaged a team-leading 14.9 yards per reception as a rookie—beating out the likes of Legette (10.1), Adam Thielen (12.8) and, on a more temporary basis, Diontae Johnson (11.9) Between Carolina's latest first-round choice in fellow receiver Tetairoa McMillan, their hopes of improvement for Legette and Thielen's prominent role in the passing game, Coker may not even hit those same numbers as a sophomore. But if he's as good as many believe, then the Panthers could have themselves quite the depth at the wideout position. Follow @ThePanthersWire on Twitter/X for more Panthers content.
