A man was seriously injured after being hit in the face by a firework Saturday night in Crystal Lake. The Nunda Rural Fire Protection District said crews were dispatched around 9:16 p.m. to the 1300 block of Beach Street in unincorporated Crystal Lake for a reported traumatic injury involving fireworks. First responders encountered a large crowd gathered on a small one-way street. Crews made their way through and found a man, whose age was not released, who had suffered serious injuries after a large firework mortar is believed to have struck him in the face and exploded. A medical helicopter was initially requested but couldn't respond due to weather. The patient was taken by ambulance to Northwestern Medicine McHenry Hospital for further treatment. The Cary Fire Protection District assisted at the scene. The McHenry County Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident. The Nunda Rural Fire Protection District said each year, fireworks are responsible for thousands of preventable injuries across the country, many involving the head, face, hands, or eyes, and leaving severe and long-lasting damage. Fire officials are encouraging everyone to consider the risks and prioritize safety during holiday celebrations.

A 3-year-old was pulled from a pool and rushed to the hospital in Cary, Illinois, northwest of Chicago Sunday afternoon. At 12:37 p.m., the Cary Fire Protection District was called to the Sunburst Bay Aquatic Center, at 1201 N. First St. in Cary. Paramedics found the 3-year-old, gender unspecified, in respiratory distress after being pulled from the pool, the fire protection district said. A medical helicopter was placed on standby, but ultimately canceled as the child's condition improved, the district said. The child was breathing and responsive after being taken to an area hospital. Multiple water rescues have transpired in Chicago amid the extreme heat this weekend. On Saturday, rescue crews pulled multiple people from Lake Michigan as crowds packed the beach. At Navy Pier, police said a 27-year-old woman identified as Zahrie Walls was pulled from the water around 5:30 p.m. Saturday, and taken to Northwestern, where she died.

The Cary Fire Protection District said just after 1:30 p.m., crews were sent to the 6700 block of Pheasant Trail in unincorporated Cary for a reported house fire and possible explosion. When crews arrived, they found a single-family home with visible signs that it had exploded, as doors and windows had been blown of front and rear of the home. Smoke was also coming from multiple areas of the home, according to investigators. Fire erupts at Northwest Side school overnight Officials said a man, the only person inside the home at the time, was found on the ground outside the home and had significant burn injuries sustained as a result of the explosion. Due to the severity of the man's injuries, officials said a medical helicopter was requested to the scene, but no helicopters in the area were available, so an ambulance took the man to Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington for treatment. Firefighters got the fire under control just before 2:15 p.m., but the home and its contents are considered a total loss. No adjacent homes were damaged. Doors and windows had been blown off the front and back of the house, and smoke was coming from several areas, according to a statement from the Cary Fire Protection District. A man, identified as the only person inside the home, was found on the ground outside with significant burn injuries. A medical helicopter was requested, but none were available in the region. He was transported in critical condition by ambulance to Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington. No additional victims were found inside. The fire was under control shortly after 2 p.m., but crews remained on scene for extensive work due to heavy fire damage. The home and everything inside were considered a total loss. Nearby houses were not damaged. Video provided to FOX 32 captured a loud bang and debris flying into the street shortly after the explosion. Another video showed a Nicor truck and multiple emergency vehicles at the scene. The public was asked to stay away while crews responded. "We're asking the public to avoid the area so our crews can operate safely and without obstruction," the post said. A man, who was the only one who lived in the house, was found on the ground outside. He had suffered significant burn injuries, the fire protection district said. The fire protection district called a working fire response. Meanwhile, a medical helicopter was called to the scene to transport the injured man to the hospital, but no helicopters were available, the fire protection district said. An ambulance came instead, and took the man to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington in critical condition, the fire protection district said. The fire was brought under control about 40 minutes after crews arrived. The whole interior of the house was severely damaged by fire and is a total loss. No one else was injured, and no adjacent homes were damaged.
