Stephen Mulhern leaves lucrative £1,000,000 presenting gig after 3 years
Stephen Mulhern has wrapped up a lucrative £1,000,000 deal. Since starting his career at CITV hosting the children's TV show Finger Tips from 2001 from 2004, he's since gone on to present Britain's Got More Talent, Catchphrase, In for a Penny, Deal or No Deal and Dancing on Ice. However earlier this year the ice skating show, which first launched in 2006, was pulled by ITV. A few months on Stephen, 48, has confirmed he's stepping away from another major project. Starting when he was a child, Stephen began public magic performances at 11-years-old, performing at Butlin's Minehead during family holidays. He was also a Redcoat for two years. Over the past three years he's also returned to the seaside resort chain, performing at Minehead, Bognor Regis and Skegness. However, after he carries out a series of sell-out shows the summer, he won't be continuing his contract. A source previously explained: 'Stephen has been a massive hit with holidaymakers. He began his career as a Redcoat and has kept families brilliantly entertained.' In a statement to Metro, his representatives added: 'Stephen has absolutely loved being part of the Butlins family – performing his stage shows in front of thousands of holiday makers across the country and the relationship with Butlins remains hugely positive. 'This change allows Stephen to explore new opportunities in the family holiday space – something he's incredibly passionate about.' Stephen's final show – Out of this World – will celebrate his 25 year-career in showbiz with 'new illusions, new games, and new shenanigans'. Speaking ahead of the shows, he spoke about his love for performing at the resort. 'The answer is simple. Butlin's gave me my very first break into the entertainment industry. I was a Redcoat in Minehead for two years and I've never looked back,' he said. 'I owe a lot to Butlin's and that's why I love coming back and performing here.' In the past year, Stephen has faced the axing of two of his programmes – Dancing on Ice and In for a Penny. However, he will soon be back with new seasons of Catchphrase, Deal or No Deal, You Bet and the travel show, The Accidental Tourist. That series will see him pushed out of his comfort zone, travelling Asia under the guidance of Ant and Dec. Speaking about the upcoming release to the Daily Mirror, Stephen explained how difficult the experience was at times. 'No one's ever seen me cry on the telly, but it was quite nice to not be behind a format, I've never done that. You're going to see behind the razzle-dazzle if you like'. 'They film and they film, and they film and they just get everything. I think what you're going to see is a lot of emotion. You'll see me totally out of my comfort zone. More Trending 'My dad had just passed away, so that's the only thing. I'm gutted that he didn't see it,' he added. After his father Christopher died in November, one of the presenters' spokespeople explained how Stephen had been facing 'an incredibly tough time over the past few weeks'. Not long after he was rushed to hospital after collapsing in a Pizza Express, but fans were reassured he was 'recovering' soon after. Stephen Mulhern makes major TV mistake for first time in 10 years
To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video Stephen Mulhern looked mortified as he had an absolute howler on Catchphrase. The 48-year-old TV veteran has been on screen for almost two decades, and took over as the new host of the classic ITV gameshow when the revival launched in 2013. Even after over 10 years and more than 150 episodes under his belt, no one's perfect – and Stephen has proven that anything can happen in television. Over the weekend, he was fronting a celebrity special of the hit show – which sees contestants try and figure out a well-known idiom or phrase from a short animated video – featuring Jeremy Vine, Charlie Hedges and comedian Luke Kempner. The clip in question showed pastries with rapidly escalating price tags, which then burst through the roof of the coffee house. 'Literally, the prices have gone through the roof,' Stephen said, before quickly realising he'd given away the actual answer instead of just offering a helpful hint. Jeremy buzzed in and asked: 'Sorry, what? Was that the answer?' 'I have never in my life done that, in 10 years,' Stephen admitted, putting his head in his hands as the contestants and audience laughed. 'I was just thinking, 'This is a very tricky one, if it's not that,'' quipped Luke, before joking Stephen's own prize money total was up to £200. Jeremy added that the awkward moment was 'a bit of Catchphrase history'. Not surprisingly, viewers had a field day with some very tongue-in-cheek calls for Stephen – who reported to be among TV's richest stars late last year – to be 'sacked'. 'He really has to go for this. I can't see how he stays on,' @HarvesterStallo sarcastically wrote, while @stokeyjoey24 quipped: 'Embarrassing. Ben Shepard would never do anything like this.' And @utahisethan joked: 'ITV can confirm that Stephen Mulhern has been dismissed from his duties on Catchphrase and that Gary Lineker will take over until the end of the season.' Another viewer, @GavMack23, teased: 'Roy walker would never.' Catchphrase first aired in 1986 with Irish comedian Roy Walker at the helm, followed by Nick Weir in 2000 and Mark Curry two years later, before the show was axed. More Trending It returned a decade later with regular contestants, but from 2018 onwards the show has featured celebrities competing against each other to win £50,000 for their chosen charity. The programme was recently commissioned for an 11th series, and ITV commissioner Gemma John-Lewis said: 'We're delighted to announce a further series of the much loved family favourite, Celebrity Catchphrase. 'The only show where you say what you see, the hugely popular series continues to win legions of fans and with Stephen's infectious and playful humour it's a firm favourite with our viewers.' Celebrity Catchphrase host Stephen Mulhern left red-faced after suffering a hilarious gaffe
Celebrity Catchphrase host Stephen Mulhern was left red-faced after making the ultimate slip-up on Saturday's episode of the show. The host, 48, showed a clip of the latest guess the catchphrase question which featured a coffee shop with rapidly increasing prices. As guests Jeremy Vine, Charlie Hedges and comedian Luke Kempner watched on as the prices continued to increase through the coffee shop roof, the host failed to give them the opportunity to answer. Stephen said: 'Literally, the prices have gone through the roof!' A hilariously awkward silence then fell over the studio when Stephen realised what he had done. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new Showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Then Jeremy, 60, jokingly pressed his buzzer and said: 'Sorry, what? Was that the answer?' Stephen, who was clearly in disbelief at his mistake, proceeded to nod before the studio, celebs and audience burst into laughter. He admitted: 'I have never in my life done that. In 10 years!' Luke Kempner joked: 'I was just thinking 'this is a very tricky one, if it's not that!' He then noted that the host had just bagged himself £200 for a charity of his choice. 'We've got a bit of Catchphrase history here!' Jeremy added before joking of the host's predecessor: 'Roy Walker never did that.' Stephen then managed to get his professional hat back on after the fail and proceeded with the game, which sees celebs try to win up to £50,000 for a charity of their choice. The show has proven so popular that it has just had the go-ahead for its 11th season, despite other cuts being made to rival shows on mainstream television. This has affected Stephen, whose other show, In For A Penny, was given the axe after six years. ITV commissioner Gemma John-Lewis said: 'We're delighted to announce a further series of the much-loved family favourite, Celebrity Catchphrase. 'The only show where you say what you see, the hugely popular series continues to win legions of fans and with Stephen's infectious and playful humour it's a firm favourite with our viewers.' The show first hit screens back in March 2018 and has featured many big-name contestants including Kelly Osbourne and Anton du Beke. Celebrity Catchphrase's predecessor, simply known as Catchphrase, first aired way back in 1985 when it was presented by Roy Walker. The show ran on and off until 2013 when it was revived by Stephen Mulhern.

ITV's huge new entertainment show to replacing Saturday Night Takeaway revealed – and show will have a hidden twist
Also find out how Stephen Mulhern has passed Roy Walker's Catchphrase record – but why he'll never copy his iconic catchline SHOW TIME ITV's huge new entertainment show to replacing Saturday Night Takeaway revealed – and show will have a hidden twist With Saturday Night Takeaway and Dancing On Ice on the shelf, ITV has had a vacancy for its next big entertainment hit. And I can reveal that a star-studded prank show called Celebrity Sabotage has already been filmed and will fill the primetime slot. Advertisement 6 ITV is to fill the Saturday primetime night gap with star-packed prank show Celebrity Sabotage, with Joel Dommett as host Credit: ITV They've installed channel golden boy Joel Dommett as host with I'm A Celebrity favourites Sam Thompson and GK Barry plus Loose Women's Judi Love as support. Their mission will be to playfully sabotage unsuspecting members of the public by completing daring and funny stunts. And they'll be helped along by a bulging line-up of celebs which include Jill Scott, Fay Ripley, Olivia Attwood, Jo Brand, Guz Khan and Harry Redknapp. But that's not where the A-list action ends. Advertisement Each episode begins with a set of contestants arriving for what they believe is a brand-new ITV show. These range from cooking challenges and relationship tests to business tasks and even murder mystery games. To make it even more convincing, these fake shows will have believable hosts, including familiar faces such as Clare Balding, Matt and Emma Willis, Monica Galetti, Jason Fox, Sara Davies and Rylan Clark. Every successfully executed sabotage mission will add more money to a secret prize pot for the contestants. The actress plays Ms Sigsby in the adaptation of Stephen King's novel of the same name, the director of a shady institution that kidnaps children before putting them through horrifying experiments and dishing out torture in the hopes of them developing telekinetic and telepathic powers. The series director Jack Bender told me: 'Mary Louise's character is evil, and the villain, and even more so coming, let me tell you!' She's joined by Ben Barnes in the series, as former police officer Tim Jameson, and Martin Freeman's son Joe, as main character Luke Ellis, a super-smart 12-year-old with telekinetic abilities. Advertisement And for Joe, the most intimidating part of the new role wasn't getting to grips of the horrors of what happens to Luke, but getting to grips with being on set away from his family. He joked: 'I felt intimidated landing in Canada. I didn't know anybody on the whole continent.' The Institute airs on MGM+ from July 13. Prime Video will air a series of documentaries about some of the UK's most high-profile true crimes. It comes from the minds behind the BBC's Munya Chawawa's Race Around Britain and Channel 4's The Big Narstie Show. An insider teased: 'Say! Less! is a rapid fire mix of viral parodies and absurd character - it's bold, smart and unapologetically Black British Gen Z.' Casting is yet to be announced but will showcase talent from rising comedy stars. Advertisement It will stream on ITVX in October. Patsy's live 'too dull' for Wives 6 Patsy Kensit has turned down Real Housewives of London – admitting her life's too quiet for the drama-packed series Credit: The Mega Agency I revealed last month that she was approached to star in the new Real Housewives of London, but Patsy Kensit has now revealed why she turned down the opportunity. And it's not because the actress, who is the ex-wife of Liam Gallagher, was worried about sharing the behind-the-scenes of her life on the Hayu series. Advertisement Surprisingly, it's because she reckons her life is too boring. Patsy told me: 'I did have a meeting with them, but I live in my little flat in London with my cat, my sons have flown the nest, and I don't think my lifestyle would stand up to these women. 'I wouldn't fit with them - but I'm a huge fan and I love the show, Real Housewives of Cheshire's Dawn Ward is one of my favourites, I'm a superfan of hers.' Chatting to TV Biz on the set of ITV's Celebrity Catchphrase, Stephen revealed a secret behind Roy's famous 'It's good… but it's not right' saying, which he'll never emulate. Stephen said: 'The reason he used to say that is he never used to wear an earpiece to the production team. Advertisement 'So the floor manager would give him a thumbs up if the answer was right, or a thumbs down if it was wrong. 'So to give him more time, Roy would go, 'it's good..' wait for the floor manager to go down or up… then 'but it's not right' or 'and it's right!'. Which is amazing, really, isn't it? 'I find it fascinating that Noel Edmonds, Roy, Bruce Forsyth, all those legendary performers and presenters never wear earpieces. 'They just don't like it. Brucie never did it, even on Strictly.'
