Former Secretary-General of the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (MUDA), Mr. Amir Abd Hadi, today clarified that he resigned from his position as MUDA's Secretary-General and Central Executive Committee Member in March 2025 due to personal reasons. In a statement issued, Mr. Amir informed that a transition process for the position has been underway since then, with Ms. Ainie Haziqah now having fully taken over as the new MUDA Secretary-General. Referring to the latest development where MUDA President, Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, was acquitted and discharged from previous charges, Mr. Amir expressed confidence that this would serve as a catalyst and a new beginning for the party to face future challenges, starting with the Sabah State Election and subsequently the 16th General Election (GE16). He emphasised that a restructuring of the party's leadership is necessary, and key positions, including that of the Secretary-General, need to be filled promptly. Mr. Amir also conveyed his gratitude for the Court of Appeal's decision. As a co-founder of MUDA, although no longer holding a position, he affirmed his continued support for the party and expressed full trust in the current leadership to steer MUDA forward. He also stated his intention to continue working closely on issues where there is mutual agreement. For the time being, Mr. Amir will fully focus on his duties as Executive Director of MANDIRI. He hopes this statement clarifies any confusion that may have arisen. Concluding his statement, Mr. Amir extended his apologies for any shortcomings during his tenure as MUDA's Secretary-General and expressed gratitude to the leadership and members at all levels for their excellent cooperation since he first assumed leadership responsibilities. He also hoped that members at every level would provide full support to Ms. Ainie Haziqah as the new MUDA Secretary-General. Related

Muda offers presidency to Syed Saddiq after acquittal

KUALA LUMPUR: Muda's Central Executive Committee (CEC) has offered the party's presidency back to Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman following his acquittal of corruption charges. The party's acting president, Amira Aisya Abd Aziz, said the CEC's decision was unanimous. She said Syed Saddiq, the Muar Member of Parliament, had cleared his name in court. "He has also consistently defended the dignity and good name of Muda throughout his tenure as an MP," she added. Syed Saddiq, who is the Muda president, vacated his post during his corruption trial. "The CEC believes that with Syed Saddiq's return to the party's leadership, he can strengthen Muda, especially in steering the party through the upcoming general election. "At the same time, the CEC also respects Syed Saddiq's need to consider this offer and has agreed to give him ample space," she said. Yesterday, Syed Saddiq was acquitted of four charges of abetting criminal breach of trust (CBT), misappropriation of party funds and money laundering. A three-judge Court of Appeal panel led by Datuk Ahmad Zaidi Ibrahim allowed the former youth and sports minister's appeal, setting aside his conviction, seven-year prison sentence, RM10 million fine and two strokes of the rotan.

DAP shoring up unity, Indian support with CEC picks, says analyst

DAP leaders Lim Hui Ying and V Sivakumar, ousted at its March polls, have now been appointed to sit on the party's central executive committee. PETALING JAYA : DAP's decision to appoint Lim Hui Ying and V Sivakumar to its central executive committee (CEC) appears to be an effort to close ranks and boost Indian representation in the party, says an analyst. James Chin of the University of Tasmania said both appointments had been expected, explaining that Sivakumar's selection reflected a push for ethnic diversity within the party. 'Sivakumar was appointed because they want to increase the non-Chinese voices, especially Indian voices, so that's okay. 'He is also a long-term DAP grassroots leader. It's good that he's there to provide an Indian balance,' he told FMT. Chin said Lim's appointment signalled a mending of ties with the Lim family, following earlier criticism over their perceived dominance within the party. 'The party (appeared to) turn hard against the Lim family (during the CEC elections), so I think this is the party sending a signal they don't want to fight the Lim family. 'Hence, they allow two Lims to be in the CEC. It's very much a sort of a peace offering,' he said. Hui Ying's elder brother, former Penang chief minister Lim Guan Eng, was elected to the CEC at the polls. Akademi Nusantara's Azmi Hassan said Hui Ying's appointment may also be about allowing her to retain her position as deputy education minister. He said it would be hard to justify her place in Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's Cabinet otherwise. 'So, just to justify her presence as deputy minister, she is appointed to the CEC,' he said. Azmi said Sivakumar's inclusion could raise questions, given that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission had investigated the human resources ministry during his tenure as minister. 'The stigma of being investigated by MACC makes it difficult to justify Sivakumar's appointment' he said. In April 2023, Sivakumar rejected calls to resign or go on leave after MACC questioned him twice over alleged corruption in foreign worker recruitment. Three of his aides were remanded but later released. Sivakumar subsequently sacked five aides. Lim and Sivakumar were among the 10 appointed to the CEC earlier this week. Both contested during the CEC elections in March, but failed to secure enough votes. The others are Kelvin Yii, V Papparaidu, M Thulsi Thivani, Chen Kah Eng, Yeoh Soon Hin, Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali, Yap Yee Vonne and Wu Him Ven.
