Bhusawal div leads in medical assistance & passenger services
Nashik: Central Railway's Bhusawal division handles, on average, 29 medical assistance cases daily after passengers raise demands through the Rail Madad portal by dialling 139 onboard trains. For the year 2024-25, the Bhusawal division received 62,868 complaints via the Rail Madad, of which 9,345 pertained to medical help. The division achieved the best response time performance nationwide. According to Ity Pandey, the divisional railway manager, "We have topped in the number of all kinds of services handled through the portal across the country. In case of medical help, the busiest of the health centres is Manmad junction, where the complaints of people travelling by trains from Daund to Manmad are attended to. Similarly, cases registered in Itarsi are handled by Khandwa of the division." The Bhusawal division is equipped with doctor facilities at seven major stations — Nashik Road, Manmad, Jalgaon, Bhusawal, Khandwa, Akola, and Badnera. Emergency Medical Rooms (EMRs) are functional at Nashik Road, Jalgaon, Bhusawal, and Akola. These EMRs ensure immediate attention to passengers in need of urgent medical care. Passengers dial 139 requesting help, whether for milk for a baby, medical assistance, safety and security issues, non-functioning air conditioning systems, fans, tubelights, cleanliness in coaches, toilets, and other concerns. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The calls are diverted to the appropriate departments, and action is taken as required."As part of the system, passengers raise their call for health concerns that are attended to by the staff. "The important cases handled include two onboard deliveries of pregnant women, 10 pregnant women referred to hospitals, 32 cases with breathing difficulties, 13 cases of chest pain, 37 cases of injuries, 17 cases of passengers found unconscious, and such others," added the officer. Other cases handled included medication for fever, pains, and other non-emergency issues. Additionally, passengers requested milk for babies, which the railways provided, with consumers required to pay for the goods. "The aim is to ensure people's journey is pleasant and memorable," the officer said.

Launched with much fanfare, Konkan Railway's Ro-Ro to Goa has just one booking in one week
MUMBAI: It has been a week since booking began for the country's first Ro-Ro train service, which will ferry cars, between Maharashtra and Goa. However, there has been scarce interest evinced by citizens, as until Sunday, the Konkan Railway authorities received only 38 calls inquiring about this, of which only one person booked a seat for the journey that begins on August 23 from Kolad. The Konkan Railway (KR) authorities said that in the event of insufficient bookings (fewer than 16 cars), the trip would be cancelled and registration fees refunded. Representative picture of Roll-on Roll-off (RO-RO) service (HT Archives) (Arvind Yadav/HT PHOTO) The Ro-Ro, which can accommodate 40 cars per trip, has been planned as a non-stop run from Kolad in Maharashtra to Verna in Goa. Just before the Ganpati festival, the Konkan route becomes extremely busy for the railways, which operate regular and special trains with coaches exceeding their carrying capacity. Sources in the railways said that the majority of the queries they had received pertained to whether the Ro-Ro halted at important stations like Ratnagiri and Sawantwadi, which see a high footfall of people going to their hometowns to celebrate Ganeshotsav. However, since there are no facilities available for loading and unloading cars at these stations, there will be no halts, said railway officials. The Ro-Ro facility is proposed to be operated on alternate days in each direction until September 11. The bookings for the service will close on August 13 for the route that commences from August 23 from Kolad and August 24 from Verna. Akshay Mahapadi, secretary of the Akhand Konkan Railway Pravasi Seva Samiti, Maharashtra, pointed out that the 12-hour train journey offered no time saving over the 10 to 12 hours by road during peak congestion, especially considering the three-hour-earlier reporting and car-loading period. 'Also, the high cost of ₹7,875 per vehicle plus individual passenger fares is not affordable for most families,' he said. 'The concept is innovative but its timing is highly unsuitable. They should have announced this around December for the New Year's celebration.' The rail passenger associations fear that the Ro-Ro will eat up space that otherwise could be used to run more Ganpati special trains. At present, Central Railway has announced 250 special trains and Western Railway will operate 44 special trains for the festival. The rail passenger associations said that running the Ro-Ro train would require a full set of operational staff (loco pilot, assistant, guards, train manager) and an entire path on the already saturated Konkan Railway route that could instead be used to operate Ganpati special trains.

At 922, railway fatalities drop marginally in 1st 5 mths of '25
1 2 Mumbai: Fatalities on Railways in Mumbai caused due to various factors dipped marginally from 1,003 in Jan-May 2024 to 922 in Jan-May 2025, police data has shown. A majority of the deaths in the first five months of this year were caused by track crossing (461) and falls from crowded trains (210), which are both preventable factors. Railways said they have attempted to prevent track crossing by identifying critical 'black spots', removing ramps at the end of platforms and constructing boundary walls. According to police data, Thane section had the highest number of deaths from track crossing (75), while Kalyan section had most fatalities from falling off locals (50) so far this year. Activist Subhash Gupta of the Rail Yatri Parishad said that to prevent accidents from track crossing, foot overbridges must be constructed at locations where demand from commuters is high. On June 9, five people were killed and eight were left injured after falling off two fast suburban trains on opposite tracks near Mumbra. An internal investigation was started by Central Railway to look into the reasons. Activists highlighted that the approval of large scale housing projects in the distant suburbs has not been accompanied by development of alternative modes of transport. As a result, the residents depend completely on the railway network. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Owning A Villa In Dubai Might Not Be As Costly As You Think Villas Dubai | Search Ads Undo "Closed-door locals are essential for commuter safety but it is not possible on existing services. Air-conditioned locals have automatic doors but their fares are unaffordable for the common man. So, non-AC locals that arrive on the platform after AC locals are packed beyond capacity. Commuters are forced to travel on the footboard to avoid delays at work," said Gupta. "India is in a chronic disaster state where helplessness, alienation, loneliness and disconnection are prominent symptoms. Mumbai is no exception. Dying under a train is a sign of serious distress. The administration has done little to make travel easy for Mumbaikars to unburden the stress," said psychiatrist Dr Harish Shetty. He added that there is an urgent need to screen families door-to-door. Among overall fatalities, deaths from natural causes such as illnesses were also high with 190 such instances being reported between Jan-May this year.
