MUMBAI: It has been a week since booking began for the country's first Ro-Ro train service, which will ferry cars, between Maharashtra and Goa. However, there has been scarce interest evinced by citizens, as until Sunday, the Konkan Railway authorities received only 38 calls inquiring about this, of which only one person booked a seat for the journey that begins on August 23 from Kolad. The Konkan Railway (KR) authorities said that in the event of insufficient bookings (fewer than 16 cars), the trip would be cancelled and registration fees refunded. The Ro-Ro, which can accommodate 40 cars per trip, has been planned as a non-stop run from Kolad in Maharashtra to Verna in Goa. Just before the Ganpati festival, the Konkan route becomes extremely busy for the railways, which operate regular and special trains with coaches exceeding their carrying capacity. Sources in the railways said that the majority of the queries they had received pertained to whether the Ro-Ro halted at important stations like Ratnagiri and Sawantwadi, which see a high footfall of people going to their hometowns to celebrate Ganeshotsav. However, since there are no facilities available for loading and unloading cars at these stations, there will be no halts, said railway officials.
The Ro-Ro facility is proposed to be operated on alternate days in each direction until September 11. The bookings for the service will close on August 13 for the route that commences from August 23 from Kolad and August 24 from Verna.
Akshay Mahapadi, secretary of the Akhand Konkan Railway Pravasi Seva Samiti, Maharashtra, pointed out that the 12-hour train journey offered no time saving over the 10 to 12 hours by road during peak congestion, especially considering the three-hour-earlier reporting and car-loading period. 'Also, the high cost of ₹7,875 per vehicle plus individual passenger fares is not affordable for most families,' he said. 'The concept is innovative but its timing is highly unsuitable. They should have announced this around December for the New Year's celebration.'
The rail passenger associations fear that the Ro-Ro will eat up space that otherwise could be used to run more Ganpati special trains. At present, Central Railway has announced 250 special trains and Western Railway will operate 44 special trains for the festival. The rail passenger associations said that running the Ro-Ro train would require a full set of operational staff (loco pilot, assistant, guards, train manager) and an entire path on the already saturated Konkan Railway route that could instead be used to operate Ganpati special trains.

Mumbai: By August 15, Mumbai is set to witness the partial opening of one of its most anticipated infrastructure developments—the 7.5-km seaside promenade of the Mumbai Coastal Road (MCR). The coastal road promenade, which stretches from Priyadarshini Park to the Worli side of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, is more than twice the length of the iconic Marine Drive promenade. The promenade, which stretches from Priyadarshini Park to the Worli side of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, is more than twice the length of the iconic Marine Drive promenade (3.5 km). Out of the total 7.5-kilometre stretch of the promenade, around 5.25 kilometres spanning from Priyadarshini Park to Haji Ali, and from Baroda Palace to Worli, will be accessible to the public by August 15. 'The promenade is almost ready, and tests for speed cameras have also been completed,' said civic chief and administrator Bhushan Gagrani. 'Although access is currently restricted with barricades, the completed sections will be opened to the public on or before August 15.' The initial pedestrian access points will include locations such as Tata Garden, Haji Ali Juice Centre, Mahalaxmi Temple, and three entry points near Worli. These are facilitated through dedicated pedestrian underpasses to ensure smooth and safe connectivity, Gagrani said. The ₹13,984-crore Mumbai Coastal Road spans from the Princess Street Flyover at Marine Lines to the Worli end of the Bandra-Worli Sea Link. It features a 10.58-kilometre, eight-lane expressway connecting Marine Drive to Worli. The promenade, forming a significant part of this larger project, is envisioned as a new attraction for walkers, joggers, and cyclists. Designed with public use in mind, the promenade ranges from eight to 20 metres in width and includes 19 pedestrian underpasses to improve accessibility. Four of these underpasses—located at Amarsons Garden, Mahalaxmi Temple, Worli Dairy, and Bindu Madhav Thackeray Chowk—will initially be opened, each equipped with ramps for differently abled persons. A dedicated cycling track runs along the full length of the promenade, with cycle stands placed at designated points. The area has been developed with public amenities such as benches, litter bins, trees, bio-toilets, and drinking water facilities. Additional toilet blocks are also proposed near the park areas adjacent to the underpasses. BEST has been approached to introduce bus services along the coastal road to meet the expected surge in footfall once the promenade is inaugurated. To support this, four bus bays with shelters have been constructed, along with a dedicated bus terminus near Worli Dairy. For those travelling by private vehicles, two underground parking facilities along Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan Road in Worli have been completed and will be operational soon. These pay-and-park facilities will be managed by agencies under the supervision of the assistant commissioner of the G/South Ward. A comprehensive security arrangement is being implemented to prepare for large crowds and ensure public safety. Personnel from the Mumbai Police, home guards, the coastal police, the Indian Navy, and the Mumbai Maritime Board are expected to be deployed for patrol and surveillance. The BMC's disaster management department and the chief fire officer have also been put on alert to respond to any emergencies that may arise. Cleanliness and order will be maintained by placing litter bins at every underpass entry and exit. The assistant commissioners of the G/South and D wards have been instructed to deploy clean-up marshals and strictly monitor unauthorised hawking. Accessibility remains a key focus, with smooth ramps for differently abled visitors throughout the promenade. Warning signs and safety advisories have been installed to warn the public against the dangers of high tides and discourage climbing on seawalls or tetrapods. Reliance Industries Ltd, appointed as the project's volunteer agency, has been given the promenade's long-term landscaping and maintenance responsibilities. Until their operations begin, the superintendent of gardens will maintain the newly planted trees.

Tejas Shinde, who works at an IT firm in Vimannagar, has been using the Metro from Nal Stop since June. "Trains run full during evening hours, and a rise in frequency would help," he told TOI. Maha Metro at present operates trains every seven minutes during peak hours, which travellers want increased to every five minutes. Priti Iyer, a frequent commuter on the Ramwadi-Civil Court route, said it is likely that the rush will increase in the coming days. She added that Maha Metro should work on two options immediately — increasing train frequency and operating trains at a higher speed to reduce travel time. "Many commuters are also looking for upgrades in feeder bus services from various Metro stations. At the moment, feeder buses run from eight to nine stations. This can easily go up to 15 stations," Iyer said. Maha Metro officials said the rise in footfall could be for many reasons other than the monsoon impetus. According to them, daily officegoers are opting for Metro services, as are a significant number of students. Around 26,000 student cards have been issued so far by Maha Metro, under which students get discounts on every ride. For the feeder buses started on different routes by Maha Metro with PMPML, average daily footfall hit 1.92 lakh in July. There was a steady rise over the last six months, officials said. Meanwhile, ahead of Ganeshotsav, devotees and members of Ganapati mandals are pushing for an increase in train frequency for the festival. Sangram Tikhe, a Shukrawar Peth resident, said, "People will use Metro in large numbers this year as these services have been made operational at the Mandai, Kasba Peth, and Swargate stations. The existing frequency will have to go up." However, officials said Metro trains are likely to run at six-minute intervals for the festival. They added that while trials have begun to facilitate this frequency as of this month, they are looking into increasing the frequency to every five minutes at a later stage. One Metro rake sent to Patna; commuters object Maha Metro recently sent a rake from Pune for the Patna Metro. Commuters and political functionaries said this rake should have been used here to deal with increasing footfall instead of sending it away. Congress leaders expressed displeasure, calling it a political move ahead of state assembly polls in Bihar. A Maha Metro official told TOI, "A sufficient number of rakes are available here at present. An order was placed for 34 rakes, of which 33 were received. One was leased to the Patna Metro. Right now, 28 rakes are operational on two routes."

A total of 84 roads remain closed across Uttarakhand. Rudraprayag and Pithoragarh are the worst-affected districts, with 20 and 17 road closures, respectively, according to official data. Parts of Uttarkashi, Dehradun, Tehri, and Pauri districts experienced light to heavy rainfall till Friday afternoon. The state recorded an average of 17 mm rainfall over the 24-hour period till Friday morning, with several districts reporting surplus rain — Pithoragarh recorded 40.4 mm (90% above normal), Udham Singh Nagar 30.6 mm (144% surplus), Bageshwar 105% above average, and Chamoli 80% above normal.
