Father of actor Shine Tom Chacko laid to rest
The funeral of C.P. Chacko, 70, father of Malayalam actor Shine Tom Chacko, who was killed in a road accident on the Dharmapuri national highway, near Palacode, in Dharmapuri district on June 6, 2025, was held at the Mount Carmel Church in Mundur, Thrissur, on Monday. Earlier, the body was kept at his house in Mundur for the public to pay homage. Actors Tovino Thomas, Soubin Shahir, and Sarayu were among those who paid homage. Shine and his mother Maria Carmel, 65, who had sustained injuries in the accident, paid their last respects at the house in the morning. They were brought in an ambulance from the private hospital in Thrissur, where they are undergoing treatment. The actor, who had sustained a fracture below his left shoulder and a minor spinal fracture, is expected to undergo surgery on Tuesday, according to the hospital authorities. His mother had sustained hip fracture in the accident that occurred near Parayur. The car had reportedly rammed a moving lorry from behind. To Bengaluru While the septuagenarian was killed on the spot, the 41-year-old actor, his brother Joe John Chacko, 36, and their mother were injured along with the driver, Anees, 42. All four were initially admitted to the government medical college hospital at Dharmapuri for treatment. The actor had recently admitted to using drugs. The family was reportedly travelling from Kochi to Bengaluru, where he was reportedly undergoing rehabilitation.

Diet is both cause and cure for MASLD, a liver condition: experts at The Hindu-Naruvi event
As against a 30% global incidence, 40% of the Indian population is affected by metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), a liver condition that remains a silent pandemic. Gastroenterologists on Sunday (June 8, 2025) discussed this disease linked to lifestyle at The Hindu-Naruvi Hospitals webinar series under the 'Healthy India Happy India' initiative. Experts emphasised that weight reduction is the key to treating this non-alcoholic fatty liver condition triggered by unhealthy lifestyle and metabolic risk factors such as obesity, Type 2 diabetes and insulin resistance. Speaking at the webinar on MASLD, Ashok Chacko, senior consultant and head, Department of Gastroenterology and Liver Diseases at the Naruvi Hospitals, said the liver condition largely remains undiagnosed in 53% of Indian population who are at higher risk due to co-morbidities, because there are hardly any symptoms till the liver fails. 'Fatigue or tiredness and a mild pain on the right side of the abdomen could be the only early symptoms and often ignored. MASLD is a lifestyle disease caused due to increased intake of food and decreased exercise, and co-morbidities impact the disease progression,' he said. Though the disease is static or reversed in 80% to 85% cases, MASLD is not harmless and cannot be ignored. Prof. Chacko said 15% of all patients develop steatotic hepatitis (inflammation of the liver), which takes seven years to develop, and 5% develop liver cirrhosis, which takes another 25 years. 'A few also get liver cancer but due to the long timespan and lack of symptoms, people neglect it,' he said. Screening must Referring to common doubts and concerns about fatty liver and determining the risk of developing complications, R.S. Arun, Head of Medical Gastroenterology, Madras Medical Mission, Chennai, said targeted screening of those with high risk factors, and surveillance of disease progression helped in dealing with complications. He recommended blood tests and ultrasound every six months, and a non-invasive fibroscan every one to three years. He reiterated that every person living with diabetes or pre-diabetes, hypertension, high lipid profile, elevated liver enzymes, family history of heart disease and liver cirrhosis should undergo regular check-ups. While the treatment of MASLD starts with managing the risk factors, maintaining ideal weight and healthy lifestyle with nutrient-dense diet, adequate sleep, hydration, and following an exercise prescription is the key to reversing fatty liver, said Rabindranath E., consultant in medical gastroenterology with Naruvi Hospitals, Vellore. Diet is both the cause and cure for MASLD, he said. The mantra is to reduce the portion size and calories, and stick to a protein-rich, low-carb diet. 'Consistency in physical activity such as walking, jogging, cycling and swimming for at least 12 weeks will start reaping benefits,' said Dr. Rabindranath. He also recommended quitting smoking and alcohol, and following customised and intermittent fasting to reduce liver fat. Injured actor Shine Tom Chacko to undergo surgery after father's funeral on Monday
Thrissur: Malayalam actor Shine Tom Chacko, who was injured when his car crashed with a lorry at Dharmapuri in Tamil Nadu, will need to undergo surgery on his left hand, according to doctors attending on him. Speaking to the media here on Saturday, doctors attached to a private hospital in Thrissur said the surgery will take place anytime after the funeral of Chacko's father on Monday. "The actor and his mother were brought from Dharmapuri late on Friday night. Chacko has left humerus multiple fractures, an issue in the backbone's vertebrae, besides having multiple concussions on his body," said Sujoy, the treating orthopaedic surgeon. "All his vitals are stable, and when we informed him about the need for surgery, he said that since his father also passed away in the car crash, the funeral is fixed for Monday," added Sujoy. "His mother also has injuries. She is also stable. She has suffered hip injuries and a minor head injury. She will need rest," added the surgeon. "Chacko asked us when he can resume shooting, and we told him that he needs rest and rehabilitation for six weeks after surgery. He can resume light shooting activities after six weeks, but for doing fight scenes, he will have to wait for three months," said Sujoy. The accident took place on Friday at 6 a.m., and Chacko's father passed away while he was being taken to the hospital. The car occupants included the actor, his father, mother, brother and driver. The family which left from here in the wee hours on Friday was on its way to Bengaluru for the treatment of the actor, who is presently undergoing de-addiction rehabilitation. The actor was in the news since April after he was arrested after nearly three hours of questioning under Sections 27 and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Thrissur: Union MoS Suresh Gopi meets Malayalam actor Shine Tom Chacko in hospital
Thrissur (Kerala) [India], June 7 (ANI): Union Minister of State for Tourism & Petroleum and Natural Gas, Suresh Gopi, met actor Shine Tom Chacko at a private hospital in Thrissur. Malayalam actor Chacko was admitted to the hospital after he met with a road accident in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. Chacko and his family were in a car accident, in which the actor lost his father. South India International Movies Awards (SIIMA) took to X and extended condolences to Chacko and his family. SIIMA wrote, 'Malayalam actor Shine Tom Chacko was injured in a tragic car accident near Dharmapuri, Tamil Nadu. The accident claimed the life of his father, CP Chacko, who died on the spot. The family was en route to Bengaluru when their car collided with a stationary lorry. Shine, along with his mother, brother, and driver, sustained injuries and is currently undergoing treatment. SIIMA extends its heartfelt condolences to Shine Tom Chacko and his family during this time of grief.' Chacko was recently arrested in a narcotics case and was later released on bail. Malayalam actors Chacko and Sreenath Bhasi appeared before excise officials in Alappuzha in April, as part of an ongoing investigation into the seizure of hybrid ganja worth approximately Rs 2 crore earlier that month. The drugs were discovered in the possession of a woman, who allegedly told the excise authorities that she had consumed drugs alongside both Chacko and Bhasi. Based on her statement, the excise department issued notices to the actors, prompting their appearance for questioning. Chacko has previously also faced allegations of drug use and misconduct. On April 22, the Film Employees Federation of Kerala (FEFKA) issued a final warning to the actor, urging him to refrain from any further drug use or disruptive behaviour on film sets. (ANI)

Malayalam actor Shine Tom Chacko sustained serious injuries in a road accident near Paraiyur in Palacode on the Salem-Bengaluru National Highway on Friday morning. Tragically, his father, CP Chacko, was killed on the spot.
