Rahul Gandhi to address mega rally in Bhubaneswar
Bhubaneswar/ New Delhi, July 11 (UNI) Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi and Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge will address a mega rally, 'Samvidhan Bachao Samavesh', at Baramunda ground in Bhubaneswar today. This will be Gandhi's first visit to the state as Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha. Gandhi will be accompanied by AICC General Secretary (Organisation) K.C. Venugopal. After the rally, Rahul Gandhi, Kharge, and Venugopal are also likely to hold discussions with the Congress Legislature Party, PCC President, and MLAs at Congress Bhavan on organisational matters. The rally in Odisha comes after the INDIA bloc held a massive "Bihar Bandh" rally in Patna on July 9 against electoral roll revision in the poll-bound state, where Rahul Gandhi launched a sharp attack on the Centre and the Election Commission of India, alleging that the Maharashtra model of "stealing elections" is being implemented in Bihar. "We have come to Bihar, where people have sacrificed their lives for the Constitution. It is written in our Constitution that every citizen has the right to vote. I want to tell the people of India and Bihar that just like the Maharashtra elections were stolen, similarly, an attempt is being made to steal the Bihar elections," LoP Gandhi said while addressing a large gathering during the 'Chakka Jam' protest in Patna against the voter list revision. Alleging that the "pattern of electoral manipulation" seen in Maharashtra could be repeated in Bihar, Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) leader Tejashwi Yadav called the ECI a "Godi Aayog" while accusing the NDA alliance of using the constitutional body to remove the names of "Bihar's poor people" from the voter list. Several senior leaders of the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) bloc, including CPI General Secretary D Raja, CPI (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation leader Dipankar Bhattacharya, Bihar Congress President Rajesh Ram, Kanhaiya Kumar, and Sanjay Yadav, also participated in the protest in Bihar. The Congress leader said, "The constituencies where voters were added, BJP won." However, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has reported significant progress in Bihar's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) exercise, with over 57 per cent of enumeration forms collected in the first half of the designated period, reinforcing the commission's commitment to maintaining pure electoral rolls across the country. The Bihar Assembly elections are to be held later this year and the state will witness a multi-cornered contest with the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by the Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) and the BJP, facing off against the Mahagathbandhan (Grand Alliance) comprising the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), the INC, and other parties. Rahul accuses BJP of trying to steal Bihar polls on the lines of Maha
Patna, July 9 (UNI) Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, holding aloft a copy of the Constitution, today alleged that the BJP was attempting to steal votes in the upcoming Bihar assembly elections as "they did in Maharashtra" in the name of Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The Congress leaders was addressing a gathering in a march that he led from the Income Tax roundabout to the Election Commission's ( EC) office. The march was stopped near the Shaheed Smarak during the dawn-to-duck Chakka Jam protest called by the opposition Grand Alliance (GA ) demanding immediate halt to the SIR. Rahul accused BJP of attempting to rig the upcoming Bihar Assembly polls "on the lines of what they did in Maharashtra." The Congress leader was seen holding a copy of the Indian Constitution while addressing the crowd. "Just like Maharashtra's election was stolen, now there is an attempt to steal the Bihar elections too'. He warned the people that "all attempts were being made by the BJP to steal votes in Bihar.' He said the BJP realised that the Opposition understood the "Maharashtra model", and now they have brought a new "Bihar model", a tactic to snatch away the votes of the poor. Accusing the EC of working to favour the BJP, Rahul said that instead of discharging its responsibility to protect the Constitution, the government was functioning like the offshoots of BJP and RSS. He warned EC that the law will not spare it if it failed to protect the Constitution and discharge its responsibilities towards the people of Bihar. Continuing his attack, Rahul said the EC was not an agent of any political party and its job was to uphold the Constitution of the country. Accusing the poll panel of being partial, Rahul alleged that it was a nominated election commissioner of BJP who was trying to snatch away the people's future and right, which the people will never tolerate. He said that earlier election commissioners used to be selected by every political party, but now they have been nominated by the BJP. Even the Chief Justice of India, who had shown his interest to attend the meeting for selecting the election commissioner, was not allowed to join the meeting. Rahul said after analysing the defeat of INDIA Alliance in Maharashtra Assembly Elections, he carefully analysed the data and found that BJP won in the constituencies wherever the strength of voters had increased by 10%. He said a perusal of data revealed that the strength of voters had astonishingly increased by 4 to 5 thousand within a month in Maharashtra. He alleged that despite his repeated demand, the EC declined to provide the voter list and videography to cover up the rigging, which "clearly indicates massive irregularities in the voters list during Maharashtra Assembly Elections". He said the Constitution has given each voter the right to exercise his franchise, which the EC was snatching away at the behest of BJP. UNI RS PRS

Reportedly, all parties of the Mahagathbandhan will participate in the protest. Earlier, ANI reported on Sunday that on behalf of Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), the party's MP, Manoj Jha, has challenged in the Supreme Court the ECI's move to immediately implement the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list across Bihar. Meanwhile, Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra on Sunday expressed SIR being carried out by the ECI in Bihar, saying that her party has to challenge the exercise to revise the voter list across Bihar in the apex court. The move by the poll body of India to conduct the SIR exercise was announced just a few months before the assembly elections that are scheduled for later this year. Initial Phase Of SIR The SIR in Bihar is being implemented smoothly at the ground level with the active cooperation of the electors, the ECI said on Sunday. "The initial phase of SIR, during which Enumeration forms were to be printed and distributed, is almost complete with the forms having been made available to all the electors who were available," read a statement from the poll panel. According to ANI, ECI also reiterated that SIR is being conducted as per the SIR instructions dated June 24, 2025, and there is no change in the instructions. As per instructions, draft electoral rolls that will be issued on August 1, 2025, will contain the names of persons whose enumeration forms have been received. Importance Of Voter List Revision Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar underlined the significance of carrying out a revision of the electoral rolls, saying that the poll body has constantly held meetings with thousands of representatives of political parties, who had expressed dissatisfaction with the current state of the electoral rolls.
