Indian researchers develop diagnostic device to detect early-stage bone cancer

New Delhi: In a major scientific breakthrough, researchers from IIT (BHU) in Uttar Pradesh have developed a miniaturised, self-reporting diagnostic device that can detect early-stage bone cancer with high precision. The first-of-its-kind sensor detects osteopontin (OPN) -- a key biomarker for bone cancer. The device is reagent-free, portable, and cost-effective and is ideal for rural healthcare, said the research team led by Dr. Pranjal Chandra from the School of Biochemical Engineering. The device works much like a glucose metre and enables quick, accurate, and on-the-spot detection, even in resource-limited settings. The device uses a custom sensor surface composed of gold and redox-active nanomaterials, allowing it to function similarly to a glucose meter. 'This technology simplifies cancer detection and empowers primary health centres,' said Prof. Chandra. The findings are published in the prestigious journal Nanoscale (Royal Society of Chemistry, UK). OPN is a crucial biomarker associated with osteosarcoma -- a highly aggressive form of bone cancer that primarily affects children and adolescents. While current methods to detect OPN are costly and time-consuming, the new device offers rapid and accurate results with minimal equipment. It is designed as a reagent-less immunosensor, which enables on-the-spot and affordable testing. It is especially beneficial in rural and resource-constrained areas where early cancer detection is often delayed. Cancer is a major public health concern in India, with rising incidence rates and significant mortality. Lauding the innovation, Director Prof. Amit Patra called it 'a prime example of technology with a human face'. He said it contributes to precision medicine and national health priorities. He added that the innovation aligns with the government's Make in India and Start-up India initiatives. A patent application has been filed, and efforts are underway to convert the prototype into a smartphone-compatible diagnostic kit for remote healthcare access, the researchers said.

Laying of underground power cables along Car Streets around Swami Nellaiyappar temple completed

The Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) has completed the work on laying underground power cables along all four Car Streets around Swami Nellaiyappar Gandhimathi Ambal Temple to facilitate the smooth and safe conduct of the 'Aani' car festival to be held on July 8. Whenever the car of Swami Nellaiyappar Temple was drawn during the 'Aani' festival, the Tangedco would stop power supply on these four streets by temporarily disconnecting the cables to ensure the devotees' safety. The cable would be reconnected after the car crossed each street. To avert this cumbersome and time-consuming exercise, Tangedco has laid underground power cables along the four car streets. Led by Regional Chief Engineer Chandra, the Tangedco personnel on Thursday inspected the underground power cabling done along the four Car Streets and the mock restoration of power supply once the car crosses each Car Street. 'Even though the time and energy we'd have to spend for reconnecting the power cables will be saved this time, thanks to the underground power cabling, we'll have to stop the power supply during car festival as some of the youth would climb the electric poles. Till last year, our personnel had to reconnect the cables crossing the roads after the car crosses every point. This year, this problem will be averted. We'll have to just switch on to restore power supply after the car crosses each Car Street as the crowd will also follow the car until it reaches the station again in the evening,' said a senior Tangedco official. Ms. Chandra and others also checked the stopping and restoration of power supply during the inspection on Thursday. Meanwhile, new CCTV cameras were being installed by the police on all four Car Streets after removing the defunct cameras as the police would monitor the devotees moving around the temple from the control room to be set-up during 'Aani' festival. Moreover, watch towers are also being erected at vantage points on these streets. The Corporation is expected to commence the road-laying work shortly.

MSEDCL hikes tariffs by up to 3% for 100+unit users

The Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission ( MERC ) has come out with the tariff orders for state power utility firm MSEDCL, which shows a marginal increase in tariff from 0.5 to 3 per cent for low and high-end residential consumers having monthly electricity consumption over 100 units. In the 0-100 consumption category, there is relief as the orders showed a drop of 9 per cent in tariff this financial year. The new tariffs will come into effect from July 1. MSEDCL tariffs continue to be the highest in the state as compared to BEST, Tata Power and Adani Electricity. MSEDCL managing director Lokesh Chandra said that 70percent of consumers were in the 0-100 units category and they have got huge relief. "In the past, we witnessed a minimum 10 per cent hike in tariff and this year we have changed the scenario. In the next five years, tariff is set to drop furthermore as we are procuring more green power through solar, hydro etc, saving Rs 66,000 crore in power purchase," Chandra said, adding that tariffs will not go up next five years for all including industry ensuring more industries come to Maharashtra. Tariffs will drop eventually for all residential users till 2029-30. For example, in the 301-500 units consumption category, there is a drop of 13 per cent, 26 per cent for 0-100 units etc. "There is an 80 per cent discount in solar hours in the residential category for smart meters and that's how all monthly bills will be lower than existing," Chandra said. Experts said that the last tariff announced by MERC in March had a 4-13 per cent drop in rates for MSEDCL which was better than the present tariff structure. "The last tariff order was challenged by MSEDCL which filed a review petition citing discrepancies and the order was stayed for two months," he said. Another feature of the order included an additional 10 per cent TOD discount for daytime electricity use for residential consumers with smart meters and incentives for residential consumers generating solar energy.

Panchkula: Armed with slingshots, iron rods, tools, gang breaks into Sector-2 home

In a startling reminiscence of the notorious Kala Kachha gang, a couple in Panchkula's Sector-2 reported a house break-in attempt by five individuals, who were wearing only shorts and undershirts, and were armed with slingshots, iron rods, and a tool bag for breaking locks and dislodging windows. The incident took place in the early hours of Monday. The accused broke the chain lock at main gate and gained access into drawing room by dislodging a window but couldn't proceed further. (SOURCED) The thieves allegedly broke the chain lock at the main gate and gained access into the drawing room by dislodging a window but could not proceed further as the adjoining room was locked. The incident came to light when Seema Bhardwaj's husband woke up around 3:30 am to catch an early morning flight for Mumbai. He noticed unusual activity, prompting the thieves to flee the house. Bhardwaj immediately scanned the CCTV footage and was shocked by the thieves' appearance and their apparent level of preparation. In an attempt to evade capture, the intruders allegedly cut the wire of a CCTV camera installed near the window through which they entered. However, they were captured on another CCTV camera on the property. Bhardwaj said they remained inside the premises for almost an hour. In her detailed account to the police, Bhardwaj provided information about her servants, individuals who had recently visited her house for services, and other purposes. She also noted a suspicious incident on June 22, hours before the attempt, where a strange boy on a bicycle was seen peering into her house during the daytime. She had scolded him, and he subsequently fled. According to police sources, the gang that attempted this theft may hail from Madhya Pradesh. These gangs typically commit crimes in one area before moving on to another. Meanwhile, Sector-5 police station has registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and is working to identify the accused through CCTV footage. Subhash Chandra, president of the RWA, Sector-2, expressed grave concern over the increasing crime incidents, stating that nearly 8 to 10 theft and snatching incidents and attempts have occurred in the area in the last year. He also highlighted the tragic murder of an 87-year-old retired colonel and his wife in the same sector last March, where three unidentified assailants attacked the colonel, his wife, and caretaker in broad daylight with sharp-edged weapons. Chandra along with other sector residents demanded intensified and regular police patrolling in the area. Chandra further informed that the association had previously met with the local DCP and even raised this issue with the chief minister during a 'Janta Darbar' in March, but 'nothing has been done.' He also pointed out that the barbed wire fencing along the green belt on the Kalka highway side, which was fixed with cemented pillars, is damaged. A complaint was lodged with the Panchkula Metropolitan Development Authority (PMDA), but no action has been taken. Pinjore family fights back, catches one gang member Just a day after a similar incident in Sector-2, a slingshot-wielding gang attempted a robbery at a house in village Bitna, Pinjore, during the early hours of Tuesday. Four thieves, armed with slingshots, iron tools, and rods, broke through a window grill and entered the home around 2 am. Complainant Rohit said that when he woke up after spotting four individuals in the dark, they attacked him with a stone. As Rohit and his father pinned down one thief, the other three accomplices launched a relentless, 15-minute stone-pelting assault using slingshots. Rohit's wife was injured when a slingshot stone hit her face. But the family still managed to hand over one accused to the police. An FIR has been registered, and the 45-year-old accused is being interrogated. Rohit, however, alleged that despite emergency calls to police, no help arrived for 15 minutes. Only after he directly contacted the Pinjore SHO did police arrive promptly.
