Tony Jones' shock axing from Wimbledon fuels Channel Nine vs Channel Seven footy show war
Polarising footy commentator Kane Cornes has been labelled a 'smart arse' after he questioned why Tony Jones was axed from Channel Nine's Wimbledon coverage. The free-to-air network sent Todd Woodbridge, Jelena Dokic, Alicia Molik and Sam McClure to London - but Jones will be watching the action from the All England Club in Melbourne. Cornes asked why Nine's Sunday Footy Show didn't address the elephant in the room last weekend - and it comes after Jones' infamous comments about Novak Djokovic at the Australian Open in January which generated global headlines. 'What about my man, TJ. He's not going to Wimbledon,' Cornes said on SEN on Monday morning. 'TJ has been going for years and he loves it, and does a very good job, no one does it better actually. 'It's because of the incident at the Australian Open, I not what they (Nine) are saying (though). Scoop McClure is going, he got the gig. 'But that's not really what I'm interested in talking about. It's the fact it wasn't mentioned on the Sunday Footy Show.' Journalist Damien Barrett responded to Cornes stirring the pot on the The Sounding Board podcast. 'TJ clearly wanted to go to Wimbledon,' he said. 'We (at times) do hang it on each there was no reason to (this time). 'You (could) come off the top and go, 'oh, TJ, you're not going to Wimbledon. '(But) where's that going for two hours? And what benefit is that to a footy show audience that really wants to know about why games were won and lost on a weekend anyway? 'So Kane's just being Kane... he was being a smart a**e.' It comes after Cornes sensationally defected to Channel Seven last year from Nine. And come Thursday night, plenty of eyes will be on Cornes when the Kangaroos take on the Bulldogs at Marvel Stadium. North Melbourne have refused to conduct interviews with Cornes after feeling the premiership winner bullied North Melbourne duo Harry Sheezel and captain Jy Simpkin about their on-field input.

The post comes after Jelena recently shared a passionate plea for body shaming trolls to leave her alone. The former tennis star, who has shed 20 kilos, said in an Instagram post last month that she was called a slew of horrible names when she was larger. But she said that now that she has slimmed down, she is still being attacked for how she looks now that she is down to a size 10. 'When I was a size 20 someone always complained and now that I am a size 10 someone is always complaining too,' she began her lengthy Instagram post. 'It baffles me how there is always some troll, bully or unkind person out there that has to comment or put someone down. When I was a size 20, I was a called names like whale, cow, fat and asking what happened to my size,' she continued. 'Now that I am a size 10, I have apparently jumped on the "diet" culture whatever that means, it's now bad that I am healthier and lost some weight, and I have abandoned standing up for plus size people. 'Just goes to show, nothing will ever be good enough for people and that's sad.' Jelena continued: 'So if you are facing any kind of judgement especially related to size or looks, you do you and don't allow anyone to make you feel small, worthless or like you are not enough.' Jelena has been sharing her weight-loss journey with her fans over the past few months The former athlete said that she was still the same person no matter what her size. 'I haven't abandoned anyone. I just got healthier and lost some weight. My values have and always will be the same,' Jelena explained. 'But apparently so will people's judgement no matter what. If you can be anything, be kind. You never know what anyone is going through.' The Australian tennis champion has been sharing her weight-loss journey with her fans over the past few months. Jelena recently revealed she had lost 20kg in 10 months after having an eating disorder for two decades. Posting to Instagram last year, the commentator shared a post comparing her current appearance with how she looked back in 2023. In the caption, she stressed that she was happy in both pictures, adding that weight loss was not the goal but simply a 'byproduct' of adopting healthier habits. 'This is about HEALTH and not SIZE,' she continued. 'So many questions about me getting healthier, which has seen me lose weight. Weight loss was not a priority; it's a byproduct of looking after my health.' Some had raised the dangers of crash-dieting, but Jelena responded: 'I didn't lose weight quickly. I lost 20 kilos in just under 10 months. Nothing fast.' Jelena explained she had lost the weight because of 'a family history of diabetes ' and having been recently diagnosed with high blood pressure. She also revealed how she did it: 'I stopped eating late at night, especially things like burgers, pizza, fries and desserts. 'They made me feel so sluggish when I would wake up.'

Industry shock as popular Channel Nine reporter sensationally poached by rival network
Channel Seven is continuing to plunder the Channel Nine talent pool, poaching a popular senior reporter. Long-serving Nine reporter and former US correspondent Laura Turner will move to Seven's Melbourne newsroom as one of six new appointments, according to the Herald Sun. In an internal email seen by the publication, Seven's Melbourne news director Chris Salter revealed that fellow Nine reporter Phoebe Worthley would also be making the move to Melbourne. Jordan Quinn from 7News Brisbane, and Sheri Smith from 7News Toowoomba will also make the move to Melbourne. 'Laura is a natural leader in our industry — she's got a strong news sense and a passion for breaking and telling compelling stories,' Salter said. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'Her experience will be an enormous asset for us.' Turner began her career in Nine's Melbourne newsroom back in 2010, before taking on a two-year stint as US correspondent in 2015. She recently took to Instagram to mark her 15 years with Nine by sharing a montage of some of her memorable moments with the network. 'I recently marked 15 years with Channel 9 and 20 years as a tv reporter,' she wrote. 'It's been a wild ride of natural disasters, US Presidential campaigns, missing aeroplanes, Quill awards, crime scenes, NFL games, Oscars red carpets, mass shootings, typhoons, pregnancies, personal highs and crushing lows.' Back in December, it was revealed that rising Nine star Xander McGuire, the son of veteran broadcaster Eddie McGuire, had also been poached by Seven to take on an expanded role in its sport and news divisions. McGuire established himself as one of Nine's most promising talents after joining the network in 2022, with sports presenter Tony Jones describing him as 'the best young reporter I've seen in almost 40 years'. It comes after Daily Mail Australia exclusively revealed last week that Seven had poached the executive producer from Nine's nightly bulletin, Tanya Weingarth. Back in December, it was revealed that rising Nine star Xander McGuire, the son of veteran broadcaster Eddie McGuire, had also been poached by Seven to take on an expanded role in its sport and news divisions In an internal email, the network announced the one-time A Current Affair senior producer would be appointed executive producer of the broadcaster's 6pm Sydney news bulletin. Seven's acting news director Geoff Dunn welcomed the appointment in the internal email. 'Tanya started her career with Seven Queensland, so she really is coming home,' the message read. 'We will confirm her start date in due course,' he said. 'We're thrilled she is making the switch to Sydney's most dedicated news team.' Weingarth's career has spanned two decades in Australia after she started as a reporter at Seven News Queensland in 2003. A Nine spokesman told Daily Mail Australia the network wished Weingarth 'all the best for her next career move'. 'Tanya continues to fulfil her current role as EP, including tonight at 6pm,' he said. It was also recently revealed that Seven News bosses were secretly planning to sack some of their most popular and best-paid stars. Former top news boss Anthony De Ceglie had a plan to axe every Channel Seven personality earning more than $300,000 per year in favour of upcoming TV stars, according to The Australian's Media Diary column. It was planned that Spotlight chief correspondent Liam Bartlett, Seven News chief reporter Chris Reason and Seven News Sydney anchor Michael Usher were going to be quietly dismissed as part of a 'drastic cost-cutting operation'. Sunrise and Morning Show presenters Natalie Barr, Matt Shirvington, Kylie Gillies and Larry Emdur were the only high-paid stars not at risk of losing their jobs.

BREAKING NEWS Huge change to the way Aussies watch football as Optus is DITCHED as English Premier League broadcaster: Here's where to watch it instead
Channel Nine and its streaming service Stan have secured the right to air all English Premier League matches in Australia in what amounts to a seismic change for soccer fans down under. The broadcaster reached an agreement to snatch the rights from Optus Sport in a move that was officially announced on Monday. Under the terms of the deal, Nine and Stan will also be the sole way to watch FA Cup matches in Australia. The three-year-deal effectively ends Optus's live sports programming and brings an end to the Optus Sport platform, which will close. Nine has bought out the rest of the rights period from Optus, with Stan giving discounted pricing to Optus Sport customers so they can continue to watch the world's biggest football league. The transition of the rights becomes official on August 1. 'The Premier League is the most-watched football league on the planet, and alongside the FA Cup, this acquisition reinforces Nine's position as the home of sport in Australia. We are proud to deliver these iconic competitions to Australian audiences through Stan Sport,' Nine CEO Matt Stanton said in a statement.
