Charalampos Kostoulas to Brighton: Transfers TLDR
Charalampos Kostoulas is officially a Brighton player after they agreed a deal worth €35m (£29.6m; $41.2m) plus an additional €2m in add-ons with Olympiacos. Brighton announced in June the striker would become their player in July and he has signed a five-year deal that will run through to 2030. As part of this summer's transfer coverage on The Athletic, in addition to breaking news, tactical analysis and in-depth reads, our Transfers TLDR series (you can read them all here) will bring you a quick guide to each of the key deals. Kostoulas' father, Athanasios, won seven Greek Super League titles with Olympiacos and his older brother Konstantinos plays for Portuguese club Rio Ave. As an attacker, Charalampos bucks the family trend — his father and brother are defenders. He joined the Olympiacos academy in 2019 and progressed through the age groups to become the youngest player to represent the club at senior level. He made his debut for the B team in 2023, aged 15. Advertisement In 2023-24, Kostoulas was crucial to Olympiacos' UEFA Youth League title, registering five goals and two assists. The forward went on to make 35 appearances for the first team in 2024-25, scoring seven goals. Cerys Jones Kostoulas loves to drop deep to link play, but Brighton fans can also expect to see him running beyond or across the opposition back line to receive and bear down on goal. The 18-year-old tends to prioritise power over placement while shooting, so despite his strong scoring record, it might be that this needs improving when he plays at a higher level. Anantaajith Raghuraman Kostoulas profiles as a replacement for Brazilian forward Joao Pedro, who has joined Chelsea. So, presuming he develops under head coach Fabian Hurzeler, he could act as an option from the bench. The right-footed forward can play across the front line and as a No 10, so he offers versatility, too. He is excellent at positioning himself within the box to meet crosses and has a good leap, so he offers an aerial threat. Out of possession, he presses aggressively and has the raw materials for Hurzeler to fine-tune, as he did with Joao Pedro last season. Anantaajith Raghuraman According to Transfermarkt, Kostoulas missed most of the final two months of Olympiacos' 2024-25 campaign with a muscular injury, but he has not had any long-term layoffs. Anantaajith Raghuraman 'His technical ability, especially inside the box, is that of a great finisher. He can score with both feet, with his head,' Sotiris Silaidopoulos, who coached him at Olympiacos, told Sky Sports in June. 'But, for me, what people underestimate a lot in Kostoulas is how clever and how intelligent he is during the games. Advertisement 'Most people only see the first parts, like the physicality and how good his technique is. His biggest strength, for me, is his intelligence and how fast he can adapt to what a game needs. It is amazing for his age.' Cerys Jones Kostoulas has joined Brighton on a five-year deal, running until June 2030. Brighton have paid Olympiacos £29.6million (€35m), which could rise by a further £1.7m (€2m) if add-ons are achieved. The deal was initially announced by Brighton on June 12, albeit it remained subject to various regulatory processes, now confirmed as complete. The two announcements straddle Brighton's June 30 financial period end, though the way fees are accounted for means only a slim proportion of the transfer cost could have fallen into 2024-25. Chris Weatherspoon Once assumed agent fees and transfer levies are included, Brighton will have paid around £33.7m to acquire Kostoulas' registration. If the deal is deemed as complete for accounting purposes as of the final announcement, Brighton will book £6.8m a year in annual amortisation from now through the 2029-30 season. If the deal starts to be amortised from 12 June, they'll have booked £300,000 into 2024-25, £6.8m across the current and next three seasons, then £6.5m in 2029-30. Kostoulas' wage is unknown, but will of course take the cost to Brighton of signing him beyond the cost of acquiring his registration. Chris Weatherspoon

Brighton bet big on Pedro replacement
We are all usually drawn to the big-name transfers that threaten to break records. It is also worth a trawl through the slightly less glamorous-sounding acquisitions to see where the bargains might be - and who the stars of tomorrow is not a bad place to start, given their astonishing record of buying low and selling high. With Joao Pedro now at Chelsea, the Seagulls have invested in an 18-year-old striker, Charalampos Kostoulas, as his long-term replacement. The real surprise is that they have spent more than £30m on this kid from cost £4m and left for £115m. Marc Cucurella set them back £15m and was sold for over £60m. Alexis Mac Allister was acquired for about £15m and could end up pulling in £ that initial £30m outlay is big for Brighton, especially for a raw is also the small matter that most people who were looking at Greece, including me, were fixated on 17-year-old midfielder Konstantinos Karetsas. He has only played three games for the national team, but his time at Genk will be limited as the football world beats a path to his front maybe that is where Brighton are special; unlike others, they are more interested in finding players through the back door.Sign up to read more from Pat Nevin in his Football Extra newsletterGet news alerts on your Premier League team

Could Kostoulas be Brighton's next big star?
Former Brighton forward Warren Aspinall is hopeful 18-year-old Charalampos Kostoulas "is going to be the next star" for the club. The teenager, who signed from Olympiakos earlier this month, only made his senior debut for the Greek side in 2024 but has seen his career develop quickly. Advertisement He follows Brighton's renowned recruitment style of buying and developing young talent and turning a profit later down the line. "I wish him all the best because he has only just turned 18 and he has got everything going for him," said Aspinall on BBC Radio Sussex's Albion Unlimited podcast. "He will give Brighton different attacking options because he can play on the left, right or as a number 10. "We might know what he is going to do for Brighton but the opposition managers won't always know where he is going to play. So for the first five or 10 minutes of a game they might still be thinking where is he playing. Advertisement "His career has happened very quickly for him so it is just about keeping his feet on the ground and seeing what he can do. "He is a big lad. I hope he is going to be the next star for Brighton. "He has the best people around him at the club because it is like one big family." Listen to the full episode on BBC Sounds

'A balanced squad with not a huge amount more to be done'
Brighton & Hove Albion have made a fast start to the summer transfer window but the majority of incoming business appears to be done. The capture of young Greek star Charalampos Kostoulas has certainly grabbed the headlines and the Seagulls appear to have fought off strong competition for his arrival of Diego Coppola, currently performing at the European Under-21 Championship, from Hellas Verona also indicates a remoulding of the defence with the statistics for the 21-year-old's season in Serie A presenting a strong, physical profile. Both will have to transition to a new country and a new league but Brighton has a track record of helping young potential settle into a new environment. Kostoulas will be helped by the arrival of fellow Greek forward Stefanos Tzimas who signed for the club in January but remained on loan at Nuremberg. Coppola meanwhile will be joined by free agent Olivier Boscagli who is expected to join on 1 July after his contract at PSV owner and chairman Tony Bloom this week told ITV Racing he did not think there would be "a huge amount more" business done by Brighton but that the club always stays alert to any opportunities that may arise in the short-term. Now the focus will inevitably switch to departures. Joao Pedro appears to have several suitors, Kaoru Mitoma will be in demand and Carlos Baleba is bound to have his admirers but the management have always only allowed key players to move at the right the arrival of two defenders there may not be room for the likes of Igor Tudor in the squad next season while extended contracts for James Milner and Tariq Lamptey provide continuity with both hoping to put their injury concerns behind the squad looks balanced in terms of age and experience. With one Premier League season under his belt, Fabian Hurzeler should be more adept at getting the best out of his team. The 32-year-old has stressed his desire for physicality and intensity in his squad and both appear to be reflected in the deals done so far.
