The Buccaneers are investigating offensive linemen

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers received some bad news when they found out star left tackle Tristan Wirfs would be missing the season's debut, and potentially a decent chunk of time after that. Wirfs' inability to play will be leaving the Bucs with genuinely gigantic shoes to fill. The in-house next man up is Charlie Heck, resident swing tackle. Heck was signed earlier this offseason to fill the role filled by Justin Skule for the last two years. Tampa Bay appeared to be all systems go with Charlie Heck until reports surfaced today, that perhaps the team is lacking complete and utter confidence in their backup swing tackle— Bringing in George Fant, a veteran tackle, for a workout. Fant is an interesting potential pickup for Tampa. He has played in 69 career games for three separate franchises, giving him experience, if nothing else. Tristan Wirfs is arguably the team's best individual player on any given Sunday and the Buccaneers have no chance of replacing him with anyone who is already on their roster or currently on the free agent market to be added. For the Buccaneers, the key will not be replacing Wirfs, rather finding a way trend water and manage the situation until he returns. Would George Fant help Tampa stay afloat? Buccaneers' Offensive Tackle Charlie Heck is Ready to Save the Season

Buccaneers' Offensive Tackle Charlie Heck is Ready to Save the Season originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Back on March 13, former Houston Texans, Arizona Cardinals and San Francisco 49ers offensive tackle Charlie Heck very quietly signed a one-year, $1.57 million deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, expecting to ride the bench and chip in occasionally when needed. Advertisement With the recent news of Tristan Wirf's knee surgery, that's all changed. Heck, for all practical purposes, is now the starting right tackle until Wirfs returns. And that could be Week 4 of the regular season if all goes well. Heck has been thrust into the spotlight in Tampa Bay. No one can replace Tristan Wirfs, but Heck will be tasked with protecting quarterback Baker Mayfield until Wirfs can return to take over the role that he's been so masterful at since the Bucs drafted him. 'I'm really excited to be here,' Heck said, per Pewter Report, when he joined the Bucs. 'I've done a workout here before and I'm glad that it came around full circle like this and now I'm back here. I'm excited to be a part of this team.' Advertisement Heck didn't know he'd see the spotlight so soon in Tampa Bay, but signed here because he sees the team as a Super Bowl contender. 'They're right there,' Heck said. 'I'm excited to get here, learn the offense and just be here. They've got all of the talent in the world on this offense, so I'm excited.' Heck's father, Andy, has been the offensive line coach of the Kansas City Chiefs since 2013 and has won three Super Bowls as a coach after an 11-year playing career with the Seattle Seahawks, Chicago Bears and Washington Redskins, so Heck has been around excellence and knows good coaching. Heck said he was impressed with the Bucs coaching staff, and that also influenced his signing here. Advertisement 'I mean, just keeping up with different O-lines during my career, this is one that I've always kind of kept my eyes on,' Heck added. 'It's been a group that I would be excited to be a part of, so I'm happy to be here. They've done a great job.' Buccaneers' Tristan Wirfs likely to miss start of season after knee surgery: Reports

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will likely start the 2025 season without Tristan Wirfs after the All-Pro left tackle underwent surgery on his right knee Tuesday, per multiple reports. News of the surgery was first reported by the Tampa Bay Times. Wirfs dealt with a knee injury last season, which caused him to miss one regular-season game. He aggravated that injury again this offseason, leading to the surgery. Advertisement Wirfs was a first-round pick in 2020 and has started every game he has played in his five seasons. A four-time Pro Bowler and two-time First-Team All-Pro selection, he has been particularly impactful in protecting the blindside of quarterback Baker Mayfield. The timeline for Wirfs' return is unclear, though reports say he is likely to start the season on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list. In that case, Wirfs would miss at least the first four games. The Bucs signed former San Francisco 49ers left tackle Charlie Heck in free agency. His role could be elevated in the wake of Wirfs' surgery.

New Buc OL Charlie Heck impressed by 'rare freak' Tristan Wirfs

New Buc OL Charlie Heck impressed by 'rare freak' Tristan Wirfs Charlie Heck is joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which allows the team to have some added flexibility along the offensive line. They lost Justin Skule in free agency, and they are looking for a new swing tackle to fill his role. The Bucs found that when they signed Charlie Heck from the Houston Texans to fill that role. Charlie Heck arrived at the team facility for his introduction, and he was very quick to throw some memorable praise at one teammate. Heck had a smile on his face talking about his new teammate, Tristan Wirfs. He describes him as 'one of those rare freaks that don't come around often.' That is a fairly accurate description of Wirfs, as he has shown time and again, earning All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors. Heck is hoping he gets to see Wirfs get his work done from afar, for intents and purposes, the less he sees of the field, the better, as that means everyone is remaining healthy. After the injury-filled 2024 season, that would be a welcome sight.

Heck likely will serve as the team's swing tackle, replacing Justin Skule, who is joining the Vikings. The Texans made Heck a fourth-round pick in 2020, and he played four seasons in Houston. He appeared in 41 games and started 21. After the Texans cut Heck out of training camp last summer, Heck joined the Cardinals' practice squad. He stayed there until signing with the 49ers on Christmas Day. He played seven games for the Cardinals and made two starts for the 49ers.
