New Buc OL Charlie Heck impressed by 'rare freak' Tristan Wirfs
Charlie Heck is joining the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, which allows the team to have some added flexibility along the offensive line. They lost Justin Skule in free agency, and they are looking for a new swing tackle to fill his role.
The Bucs found that when they signed Charlie Heck from the Houston Texans to fill that role.
Charlie Heck arrived at the team facility for his introduction, and he was very quick to throw some memorable praise at one teammate. Heck had a smile on his face talking about his new teammate, Tristan Wirfs. He describes him as 'one of those rare freaks that don't come around often.' That is a fairly accurate description of Wirfs, as he has shown time and again, earning All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors.
Heck is hoping he gets to see Wirfs get his work done from afar, for intents and purposes, the less he sees of the field, the better, as that means everyone is remaining healthy. After the injury-filled 2024 season, that would be a welcome sight.

Jets' Quinnen Williams leaves practice after tweaking calf, Braelon Allen sits out with sore knee

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets defensive tackle Quinnen Williams left practice early Thursday after tweaking a calf muscle. Williams was participating in individual drills when he felt discomfort in his lower leg. He walked into the facility under his own power, but sat out the rest of the practice session. There was no immediate update from the Jets on Williams' injury or if he might miss any time. Coach Aaron Glenn wasn't scheduled to speak to reporters until Friday morning after practice. The 27-year-old Williams is a key part of New York's defense and a three-time Pro Bowl selection who was also an All-Pro during the 2022 season. He had six sacks last season, giving him 39 for his career since being drafted with the third overall pick in 2019 out of Alabama. Williams anchors a new-look D-line for the Jets, who also have Micheal Clemons, Will McDonald, Rashad Weaver, Jay Tufele, Derrick Nnadi, Byron Cowart and youngsters such as Payton Page, Leonard Taylor and Eric Watts competing for spots. Second-year running back Braelon Allen missed his second consecutive practice with soreness in his left knee. Allen, who ran for 334 yards and two touchdowns last season as a complement to Breece Hall, was having a standout camp before the knee issue. Glenn said Tuesday the Jets held him out that day since the team had off Wednesday and that would give Allen two days to rest 'and then we will reevaluate as we go forward and see when he will be available for practice.' Allen spent Thursday on the sideline with his left leg in a sleeve. Good Folk Nick Folk, reunited with the Jets after signing Wednesday, had a perfect practice debut. The 40-year-old kicker, who played for the franchise from 2010 through 2016, made all six of his field goal attempts during practice. He's competing with Harrison Mevis, who missed two of his six tries. Folk, nicknamed 'Folk Hero' by former coach Rex Ryan for his penchant for making big kicks, looked right at home back in New Jersey except for one thing: his jersey number. After wearing No. 2 throughout his previous stint with the Jets, Folk is wearing No. 18 this time around because backup quarterback Tyrod Taylor is wearing No. 2. ___

Jared Verse makes his NFL Top 100 debut after breakout rookie season: See where he ranks

After a standout rookie season with the Rams, Verse breaks into the NFL Top 100, solidifying his rise as one of the league's most promising young pass rushers. After a standout rookie season, Los Angeles Rams outside linebacker Jared Verse can add another accolade to what has already been an impressive start to his young NFL career. Verse was recently named to the NFL's Top 100 players of 2025, which is voted on by the players themselves. The Rams' star defender was ranked 53rd by his peers. Los Angeles, following the retirement of future Hall of Famer Aaron Donald after the 2023 season, selected Verse 19th overall in the 2024 NFL Draft, needing a new force to help lead upfront. The Rams struck gold in the draft once again with Verse, adding to their rapidly growing young defensive core with an edge who terrorizes opposing quarterbacks at an obscene rate. Verse took home Defensive Rookie of the Year honors, the second year in a row an L.A. rookie was a finalist, but the first winner for the Rams since Aaron Donald in 2014. Finishing fourth in the league in total pressures and adding 12 more in the postseason, per Pro Football Focus, Verse's performance as a rookie put him among some of the best at the position last year, even if the sacks didn't follow. Verse even received a rousing endorsement of his uncanny talent from the recently retired Terron Armstead, a top offensive lineman over the last decade. After just one game lining up opposite Verse, Armstead decreed he never wanted to do so again and predicted a Defensive Player of the Year nod in the pass rusher's future. Not a bad start to an NFL career. In 17 games, the former Florida State All-American recorded 66 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, two forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and, per Next Gen Stats, finished with 76 pressures, the second-most by a rookie since San Francisco 49ers DE Nick Bosa, who had 81 in 2019. As a result, Verse was selected for the Pro Bowl and was named the 2024 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. "One of the things that makes Jared [Verse] great is that edge that he plays with," Rams HC Sean McVay said last week during training camp. "I can remember it's the same things that [former Defensive Tackle] Aaron [Donald] and I used to talk about when he was playing. You're always right on that line of using the aggressiveness, that edge." As Year 2 begins, Verse aims to take the next step by not only being a physical leader but also becoming a vocal leader for a Rams' defense that will look to improve upon its 26th overall ranking from last season.
