Uma Thurman Shares the Reason Why She Left the Action Genre Behind After ‘Kill Bill'
Legacy has been top of mind for Uma Thurman: It's the primary reason she all but entirely avoided the action genre since 'Kill Vill Vol. 2' came out in 2004. That's about to change with her appearance in Netflix's 'The Old Guard 2,' as the villain Discord. It took a particularly special film to get Thurman out of action-movie retirement, she said on 'The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon' June 17. 'When you do 'Kill Bill,' you never stop hearing about, you know, it's like, 'Oh, got to be very careful about what I do next.' So I did other stuff.' That meant, post-'Kill Bill,' Thurman appeared in the musical 'The Producers,' rom-coms like 'Playing for Keeps,' and auteur projects such as Lars von Trier's 'Nymphomaniac' and 'The House that Jack Built' and Paul Schrader's 'Oh, Canada!' But never really action again, until 'The Old Guard 2.' The first movie, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood and starring Charlize Theron, who returns for the sequel, impressed Thurman with its 'depth' and by being 'quite moving.' In fact, she had such regard for Theron's work on that film that when Fallon asked her if being in this movie gave Thurman an opportunity to 'show everyone how it's done,' she had a pointed response. 'I didn't think I was going to show anybody how it's done after I saw Charlize in 'Old Guard 1,'' Thurman said. 'This one seemed different [from other action movies she was offered] because in 'Old Guard 1' Charlize was just so epic in it. And so I thought, 'Well, I could go do this for her in that. Where she's kind of taking the genre there. I'll go support her and fight her and battle her out.'' 'Putting her toe' into the action genre again, as she put it, didn't come quite as easily to Thurman as one might have thought, in part because she came aboard the project late and didn't have time for training beforehand. 'Oh, if only I could have trained,' she said. 'No, I came on to do it kind of at the end. So I had no training. I was like, 'Oh yeah, a sword. I think I hold it like this.'' The 38-year-old actor stars alongside the Oscar-winning actress in 'The Old Guard' movies and Henry has lavished praise on his co-star, observing that Charlize is one of the most professional people he's worked with. Speaking to People, Henry explained: 'You know what it is? She is like a fine bottle of wine. These folks are a rare commodity in Hollywood. 'She is the female counterpart to Tom Cruise,' the producer says. 'She's not first thing in the morning, last on at night, and she's creating what she wants, and she's in there with the punch. She's there with the choreography.' Henry believes that Charlize and Tom are unique figures in the business. He said: 'And Tom Cruise is some of the last of the movie stars.' Meanwhile, Charlize recently revealed that her children are unimpressed by her acting career. The 48-year-old actress is raising two of the best-known movie stars in the world – but Charlize's kids are underwhelmed by her achievements. During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Charlize quipped: 'My children have zero respect for me. 'It's just unbelievable, I feel like but they can be mean. 'Every once in a while I'm like 'There's an Oscar right there.' They are so not impressed with me.' Charlize noted that one of her kids is more impressed by action movies.

Hollywood actress Charlize Theron has called out a double standard when it comes to action movies. The Oscar-winning actress, who has been fronting action movies since 2005's 'Aeon Flux', said studios often give female actors just one shot to have an action movie hit, reports 'Variety'. She told 'The New York Times', "Yeah, it's harder. That's known. Action films with female leads don't get greenlit as much as the ones with male leads. I think the thing that always frustrates me is the fact that guys will get a free ride". As per 'Variety', she said that when it comes to men, however, they can have a box office flop but still land multiple follow-up projects. Charlize Theron, who recently opened up about her one-night-stand with a young man on a podcast show, received flak from talk show host Megyn Kelly. Slamming the podcast show, where Charlize opened up about her sexual escapade as "Sex Podcast", Megan asked her to "have some class." What's Happening Megyn spoke about Charlize's comment and said, "She's 49 years old. She's trying to sound like she's 26 years old, and it's inappropriate. It feels weird. She's one of our biggest stars, that's true. Act like some class." The talk show host even speculated that Charlize loves women, "Here she doubles down on how little she needs a man in her life. Hello, back to my theory." During an appearance on an episode of Alex Cooper's podcast Call Her Daddy, Charlize was asked for a sex advice. "I am the last person to ask...I'm sounding very cocky here, but I think it's because I found this freedom in my 40s, where I'm like, 'Oh my God,' so I just want to say this in perspective.
