'Karuppu' teaser out: Suriya unites with RJ Balaji for an adrenaline-packed actioner

The makers of actor Suriya's latest movie Karuppu released a teaser and posters on the occasion of his 50th birthday. Going by the looks of it, the movie promises an action-packed ride. Directed by stand-up comedian-turned-filmmaker RJ Balaji — who rose to fame with prank calls and witty movie reviews on FM radio — Karuppu marks his first collaboration with Suriya, who is fresh off the success of Retro. The movie stars Trisha Krishnan, Yogi Babu, Natarajan Subramaniam and the Malayalam stars Indrans and Swasika. Produced by Dream Warrior Pictures, Karuppu has Sai Abhyankkar composing its music, a relative newbie in the film industry. He shot to fame with the indie breakout number Katchi sera and followed it up with the chartbuster Aasai kooda. Talking about uncharted territories, the action genre is new for Balaji, too, whose filmography comprises the political satire LKG; the fantasy comedy Mookkuththi Amman; and Veetla Visesham, a remake of the Bollywood dramedy Badhaai Ho. Yet, Balaji promises an action flick that might be what fans of Suriya ordered. In Karuppu, he plays a lawyer by day and a vigilante at dusk, avatars that might be apt crowd pleasers. The teaser is full of meta references: Suriya introduces himself as Saravanan, his real name. The stylish finger gesture from Ghajini is back, and his role as barrister harks back to his role in the critically acclaimed Jai Bhim. There is also a reference to Rajinikanth's cult classic Baasha, when he leans on a table confidently and says he has another name — a line that occupies prime space in Tamil pop culture. Actor Dulquer Salmaan released the teaser's Malayalam version on social media. GK Vishnu is the movie's cinematographer, while R Kalaivanan is its editor. Suriya was last seen in the action thriller Retro, directed by Karthik Subburaj. The movie was a hit at the box office, erasing memories of his earlier movie Kanguvaa, also starring Disha Patani, that was critically panned. Trisha Krishnan's previous movie was Mani Ratnam's Thug Life.

HarperCollins India is delighted to announce the forthcoming publication of The Chola Tigers: Avengers of Somnath

A scintillating new novel by the bestselling author of the Shiva Trilogy and the Ram Chandra series- Amish The cover of The Chola Tigers was revealed by Indian cinema's superstar and living legend Rajinikanth, along with the author Amish, in a private ceremony in Chennai. NEW DELHI, July 22, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Scheduled for release on 29 August 2025, The Chola Tigers is the second book in Amish's Indic Chronicles, after the bestselling Legend of Suheldev. A thrilling historical saga of defiance, honour and redemption it celebrates the indomitable spirit of India. When the ruthless tyrant Mahmud of Ghazni destroys the sacred temple of Somnath, the greatest ruler of the time, Emperor Rajendra Chola, summons a squad of defiant assassins to embark on a perilous quest and bring the fearsome enemy to his knees. This historical fiction title builds on the world introduced in the 2020 bestseller Legend of Suheldev, which garnered widespread appreciation from readers and went on to become a bestseller. Pacy and action-packed, The Chola Tigers, explores the profound question: How far would you go to defend dharma and your country's honour? On the occasion of the book's announcement, Amish, author, says, "The Chola Tigers is an exhilarating story in which Emperor Rajendra Chola, the mightiest man of his era, orders a daring surgical strike on Ghazni in response to Sultan Mahmud's attack on the Somnath temple. This work of historical fiction is linked to my 2020 release Legend of Suheldev. It is about a mission ordered by one of the greatest Tamilians ever, Emperor Rajendra Chola. And it is a great honour that the cover of this book was released by one of the greatest Tamilians alive and an Indian treasure, Rajinikanth ji." Poulomi Chatterjee, Executive Publisher — HarperCollins India, adds, "Amish has brilliantly reimagined our beloved legends and epics, and episodes from medieval Indian history, for millions of people across the country to enjoy afresh. The new novel is vintage Amish—a sweeping historical saga that is pacy, dramatic, simmering with political intrigue and personal vendetta, and heart-rending in its scenes of sacrifice and retribution. At its heart it masterfully explores the depths of human courage and resilience, and the indomitable spirit of a nation that refuses to be broken. It's going to keep readers spellbound until the final page, and we can't be happier to publish it!" ABOUT THE CHOLA TIGERS The place will be of their choosing. The time will be of their choosing. But the Indians will have their vengeance. 1025 CE, India. Mahmud of Ghazni believes he has crushed the spirit of Bharat—the Shiva Linga at the Somnath temple lies shattered and thousands are dead. But among the ashes of destruction, an oath is taken. Five people—a Tamil warrior, a Gujarati merchant, a devotee of Lord Ayyappa, a scholar-emperor from Malwa, and the most powerful man on Earth, Emperor Rajendra Chola—resolve to undertake a perilous quest and strike at the heart of the invader's kingdom. From the grandeur of the Chola Empire to the shadows of Ghazni's bloodstained court, The Chola Tigers is the scintillating story of a fierce retaliation. A story of unity forged through pain, of courage born from despair, and of vengeance that becomes Dharma. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Amish is a 1974-born, IIM (Kolkata)-educated banker-turned-author. Star India Batter Opts Out Of England Stint Citing Personal Reasons

Last Updated: Star India batter Ruturaj Gaikwad has withdrawn from Yorkshire's County Championship campaign for personal reasons. Star India batter Ruturaj Gaikwad has pulled out of the County Championship deal with Yorkshire, whom he was supposed to join for the final phase of the prestigious red-ball competition in England. Gaikwad had agreed to a five-match deal, beginning with the match against defending champions Surrey at Scarborough from July 22. But in a short statement, the team confirmed that he wouldn't be playing for Yorkshire for personal reasons. Gaikwad, who leads the Chennai Super Kings in IPL and Maharashtra in the Ranji Trophy, has played six ODIs and 23 T20Is for India. But he just managed five matches in IPL 2025 as he suffered an elbow injury. 'Unfortunately, Gaikwad's not coming now for personal reasons. We're not going to have him for Scarborough or the rest of the season. So that's disappointing. I can't tell you anything about the reasons why, but we hope that everything's ok," Yorkshire coach Anthony McGrath said. Gaikwad was named in the India A team for their two games with the England Lions earlier this year, but didn't feature in either. Gaikwad led Chennai in their first five matches, of which they lost four, before an elbow injury ruled him out of the season, with former India captain MS Dhoni taking over as skipper. Gaikwad suffered the injury during Chennai's game against the Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati on Sunday, March 30. Gaikwad was struck on his unprotected elbow after stepping out to pacer Tushar Deshpande and missing the delivery in the second over of Chennai's unsuccessful chase, but continued batting and scored 63 in that match. Gaikwad played two more matches after that and made just five runs against the Delhi Capitals at home on April 5 and just one run against the Punjab Kings in Mullanpur on April 8. Chennai finished a disappointing last in IPL 2025, in one of their worst performances in 18 years. view comments First Published: Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
