SIBU (July 6): Minister for Women, Childhood and Community Wellbeing Development Dato Sri Fatimah Abdullah has lauded the 'Women of Strength' (WOS) initiative taken by Attiya Spa to empower women, especially those from the B40 (low-income) group.
She regarded it as being line with the ministry's, and also Sarawak Women and Family Department (JWKS)'s intention of enabling women to generate income not just to provide for their families, but also for them to come out of poverty.
Under the initiative, Attiya Spa provides free massage training programmes, with the participation targeted at underserved women, especially those in the rural areas.
'At the same time, this initiative enables women to be financially independent and live a life of dignity and respect.
'Often, when a corporate body starts a chain like this, they prioritise profits.
'But Attiya is leading by example giving focus and attention to those who are at disadvantage and the needy segment of our society.
'Their effort is in line with Sarawak government's intention of ensuring that the Sarawak people would have strength in economy, and that the vulnerable groups are always given attention and are never marginalised,' she said when officiating at the opening of Attiya Spa third branch here today.
Established in 2019 in Kuching, Attiya Spa also has a branch in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.
The Muslim-friendly spa is rated five stars by the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (Motac).
Adding on, Fatimah suggested for the spa to open branches in Miri and Bintulu.
Meanwhile, Attiya Spa founder Dr May Then said the goal was to equip women with practical, income-generating skills, so as to create pathways to employment and support them in achieving financial independence.
'The WOS initiative is part of our commitment to social responsibility providing women, especially those from underserved backgrounds, with an opportunity to gain valuable experience and enter the wellness industry with confidence.
'Some participants may go on to join Attiya Spa as therapists, while others may use their new skills to pursue careers locally or abroad,' she said in her speech earlier.
Among those present were JWKS director Salmah Jobeli, Motac Sarawak director Debbie Jenggut Nyelang and Sibu Labour Office industrial relations officer Hasimah Ahmad. Attiya Spa empowering women fatimah abdullah

Why some people handle the heat better than others

Some people tolerate heat less well than others, whether it's a dry or humid kind. (Envato Elements pic) PARIS : Human beings are 'homeothermic' animals, meaning that they keep their core temperature relatively constant despite any changes in the surrounding conditions. But, at the same time, their bodies naturally produce heat, which also makes them 'endothermic' creatures, like other mammals. When their bodies are exposed to intense heat, they thermoregulate by producing sweat. It is the evaporation of this sweat through the pores of the skin that evacuates the heat, thus lowering the body's temperature. Biological inequalities But this internal climate-control system doesn't work in the same way for everyone. Babies and older people sweat less than adults, which explains why they are so sensitive to ambient heat. Babies and older people are also more likely to suffer from dehydration, as they don't tend to feel as thirsty. Yet the body needs a sufficient supply of water to produce sweat and adjust its core temperature. In addition to age, an individual's ability to withstand high temperatures depends on their biological sex. The assumption that women are more sensitive to heat than men is confirmed by numerous scientific studies. Research from the Netherlands, published in 2021 in the journal International Archives of Occupational and Environmental Health, reports that deaths during heatwaves are higher among women than men. These differences are due to a number of possible causes, including differences in height, weight, perspiration, cardiovascular strain and hormones. However, it would be wrong to say that women's greater discomfort in summer is solely linked to biology. It also stems from social factors, with the Dutch researchers explaining that women are less likely than men to be well-equipped to cope with the heat due to income inequalities. Changing behaviour to better tolerate heat In addition to the physical differences between individuals, heat tolerance is closely linked to lifestyle. When temperatures rise, many people turn on the air conditioning. And this may be a good idea in the heat of the moment, but it can be less so in the longer term. The stronger the air conditioning, the greater the difference with the outside temperature. This puts their bodies to the test when they leave the air-conditioned space. Too severe a change in temperature (over 10°C) can lead to thermal shock, and in the worst case, loss of consciousness or even cardiac arrest. So it's best to use air conditioners sparingly. Diet also has an impact on one's tolerance to high temperatures. Fatty or high-protein foods contain compounds that are relatively difficult to digest. One's body has to expend more energy to process them, and therefore generate more heat. That's why people often sweat profusely after eating sausages, burgers and other grilled meats at a barbecue. When the mercury rises, opt for light meals with vegetables, lean meats or fish. Similarly, it's important to limit alcohol consumption. Generally speaking, it's perfectly possible to change your habits to acclimatise better to the heat. And that's good news as the effects of global warming become more keenly felt. Over the period of February 2023 to January 2024, the global surface air temperature was 1.52°C higher compared to pre-industrial levels of 1850-1900, according to the EU's Copernicus monitoring programme. In this context, humans are going to have to be adaptable if they're to learn to live in a world where their tolerance to heat will be increasingly challenged.

Türkiye shutting down livestock markets to curb foot-and-mouth outbreak

ANKARA, July 2 (Xinhua) -- Türkiye said on Wednesday it was closing all livestock markets nationwide to contain the spread of a highly contagious strain of foot-and-mouth disease, which has severely impacted the country's agricultural sector. In a statement, the Agriculture and Forestry Ministry said it had identified a new serotype of the disease that worsened the outbreak, attributing its spread to increased animal movement following the Muslim holiday of Eid al-Adha in early June, which is traditionally marked by livestock slaughter. To prevent further transmission, the government is shutting down livestock markets, live animal exchanges, animal collection and sales centers, as well as related fairs and festivals. These restrictions will remain in place until all livestock across Türkiye are vaccinated against the pathogen, said the statement. "This decision was taken only to accelerate the control of the disease and is a temporary and preventive animal health measure. Vaccination activities are continuing rapidly and the measures taken following the vaccination of our entire animal population will be gradually removed by monitoring the disease situation," it added. The ministry emphasized that the temporary measures would not disrupt food security or the supply of meat and dairy products.
