Ryan Gosling's Latest Appearance Is a 180 From His Wild Sci‑Fi Transformation

Ryan Gosling's Latest Appearance Is a 180 From His Wild Sci‑Fi Transformation originally appeared on Parade. Ryan Gosling is ditching his wild beard and long locks from the sci-fi transformation he debuted earlier this summer. Over the weekend, the 44-year-old actor stopped by San Diego Comic-Con where he appeared on a panel to discuss his upcoming film, Project Hail Mary. While Gosling was on hand to discuss his on screen journey to space, he looked nothing like his character. In the trailer, which premiered in June, Gosling was almost unrecognizable with a bushy beard and unwashed, stringy hair — and at Comic-Con, Gosling was back to his usual, well-kept self. He was joined by the film's directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller as well as screenwriter Drew Goddard and author Andy Weir, who penned The Martian, the novel that inspired the film. 🎬 SIGN UP for Parade's Daily newsletter to get the latest pop culture news & celebrity interviews delivered right to your inbox 🎬 The movie is set to follow middle school teacher Ryland Grace who is tasked with traveling to space, 11.9 light-years away, in order to figure out why the sun is dying and save Earth from extinction. In the midst of his endeavor, Grace wakes up on a spaceship, confused about why he is there and lacking any recollection of his past. Although the teacher attempts to bow out of the massive responsibility, he quickly learns that he doesn't have a choice in the matter. While discussing his physical transformation for the role at the event, Gosling jokingly referred to his character as "a space caveman, in this placenta onesie" — noting that he hopes to see the placenta onesie at Comic-Con in the future. Gosling added that he and the writers "tried to create these different layers to him as he's evolving from a space caveman to a space person that needs to do some really important stuff." "What's so inspiring about him is he reacts to a lot of things like I might or a lot of us might, and he's terrified appropriately of the task at hand," Gosling said, per PEOPLE. "He's somebody who on Earth had given up on himself, and has been given this opportunity to believe in himself again." Project Hail Mary is set to premiere March 20, 2026. Ryan Gosling Unveils Hilarious Footage of His 'Project Hail Mary' 'Space Caveman' Character at Comic-Con

From directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, 'Project Hail Mary' is in theaters on March 20, 2026 Ryan Gosling is ready to take moviegoers to space. The actor-producer, 44, appeared at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, July 26, to tease his upcoming spacefaring blockbuster Project Hail Mary, a science-fiction comedy based on author Andy Weir's 2021 novel of the same name. The movie sees Gosling as a middle school science teacher named Ryland Grace, tasked with traveling into space 11.9 light-years away in order to determine why dozens of stars — and the sun — are dying, risking extinction of all life on Earth. "It took me places I've never been, it showed me things I had never seen," said Gosling of the film. "It was as heartbreaking as it was funny. ... This story is about a scared guy who has to do something impossible. Now, I was a scared guy who had to do something impossible, just trying to turn this into a movie." Oscar-winning filmmaking duo Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) directed Project Hail Mary from a script by Drew Goddard, who also adapted author Weir's novel The Martian into the space-faring film that starred Matt Damon. Lord, Miller, Goddard and Weir joined Gosling for the footage-filled Hall H panel, moderated by Josh Horowitz. The crowd was treated to the hilarious first five minutes of the film, depicting Gosling's Grace — who he called "an ordinary person in this extraordinary situation" — waking up from a cryogenic state. "You may have noticed he looks like a space caveman, in this placenta onesie," quipped the Barbie star. A placenta onesie, he added, is a costume "I hope to be seeing at Comic-Con one of these days.' Working closely with Goddard and Weir, Gosling said he "tried to create these different layers to him as he's evolving from a space caveman to a space person that needs to do some really important stuff." "What's so inspiring about him is he reacts to a lot of things like I might or a lot of us might, and he's terrified appropriately of the task at hand," he continued. "He's somebody who on Earth had given up on himself, and has been given this opportunity to believe in himself again." A teaser trailer released on June 30 shows Gosling's character spending a significant amount of time alone in space. He also appears to befriend an alien on his mission, which is dubbed the titular "Project Hail Mary" by costar Sandra Hüller. That mineral-like alien, the team revealed, is nicknamed Rocky. 'It's too soon to talk about Rocky," demurred Gosling. "He's not here to speak for himself.' The faceless, five-limbed creature, glimpsed in another scene, will come to life through a mix of computer-generated animation and puppetry courtesy of The Jim Henson Company, the team revealed. "It comes alive in a way where you would die for this character," said Miller, pointing out that strange creatures don't need faces to be beloved. Miller, Lord and their designers worked diligently on nailing the accuracy in Project Hail Mary's math and science, consulting Weir for questions on astronomy. Ultimately, Miller said, "it's a story about connection, it's about hopefulness and about humanity. It's a very emotional story." Lord quipped that the movie "answers the question: 'If the universe depended on it, can adult men make friends in six days?' " Project Hail Mary, costarring Lionel Boyce, Milana Vayntrub and Ken Leung, is in theaters on March 20, 2026. San Diego Comic-Con 2025 runs from July 24 to July 27. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse Release Date Delayed for Animated Movie

The release date has shifted yet again, with Sony Pictures pushing back the release of the highly anticipated animated film. When is the new Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse release date? The Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse release date has been delayed by three weeks, with a new release set for June 25, 2027. The film was originally set to release on June 4, 2027, which itself was a new date following years of delays. According to a report from THR on the date shift, insiders note that the reason for the delay is to help its audience. With schools in summer break toward the end of June, this allows for more to see the movie. Late June is also said to be seen as a more 'appealing' date internationally, according to THR. Christopher Miller, who is co-writing the film alongside Phil Lord and David Callaham, and has also been a writer on the two previous films, took to social media to also note that the film's new release date gives it a better IMAX release window. With the delay, this now pushes Beyond the Spider-Verse to release more than four years after its predecessor, 2023's Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse. The movie was originally planned to be released on March 29, 2024; however, it was removed from Sony's calendar in July 2023 due to delays from the writers and actors strikes. Following its initial delay, the film was thought to be planned for release sometime this year. However, a new report from Jeff Sneider of The InSneider in September 2024 said that the film was going to be delayed until 2027 due to production delays and the scheduling of other Spider-Man related content. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, the first film in the animated franchise, is currently available to stream on Fubo and FXNOW, while Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse can be viewed on Disney+ and Fubo. ‘Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse' Is Delayed Again, but Only for a Bit

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse has been delayed yet again, only this time, it's less of a problem and more of a recalibration. The third and final film in the Oscar-winning animated trilogy was originally supposed to be out in early 2024 but was then delayed all the way to June 4, 2027. Now, Sony has tweaked that further and moved the film back three more weeks to June 25, 2027. The reason for this move isn't because production needs more time, however. Apparently it has more to do with just locking in a better release date after kids are out of school for the summer. Plus, producer and writer Christopher Miller noted on X that it's a 'better IMAX window,' which, indeed, it is. June 4 was just one week after Star Wars: Starfighter and one week before How to Train Your Dragon 2. Now, Spider-Verse has nothing significant bumping up against it for the rest of the summer. That'll change, but it's good to plant the flag. The third film will reportedly pick up right where the second one left off, with our hero Miles Morales stuck in an alternate dimension with a version of himself who turned into the Prowler. Across the multiverse, Gwen Stacy and several of Miles' friends begin a journey to find and save him, hoping to not destroy the entire universe in the process. And while, yes, it's a bummer to have to wait multiple years to see the final piece of the puzzle, plus three extra weeks, no one will remember that decades from now if the third film sticks the landing of this trilogy like we all hope it will. It's already, maybe, the greatest superhero one-two in the history of movies. If Beyond the Spider-Verse brings it home in a way this team is capable of? Oh man. We'll be talking about these movies until the day we die. If we aren't already. Plus, we should have at least one Spider-Man movie to hold us over in the meantime. Spider-Man: Brand New Day, starring Tom Holland, is still scheduled for release on July 31, 2026. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse is directed by Bob Persichetti and Justin K. Thompson from a screenplay by Phil Lord, Christopher Miller, and David Callaham. Expect it in theaters, not on June 4, but on June 25, 2027. Want more io9 news? Ryan Gosling's Project Hail Mary trailer breaks record in first week after fans were stunned by his appearance

Ryan Gosling's upcoming sci-fi adventure film Project Hail Mary could have box office success in its future after its first trailer broke records online. The trailer scored an eye-popping 400 million views globally in just its first week online, according to WaveMetrix, via Deadline. The trailer's success may have been partly due to the interest in Gosling's appearance, as the 44-year-old actor looked unrecognizable in portions of the video due to his wild, unkempt beard and long, scraggly hair. According to WaveMetrix, the Project Hail Mary trailer's 400 million views represent the most ever for an original film that is not a sequel or a remake. Although WaveMetrix's figure would suggest the Project Hail Mary was a massive online success, it's unclear how views were counted for its purposes. YouTube, where the trailer was posted, requires users to have clicked on a video and to watch at least 30 seconds in total to register toward its view count. The trailer was also a milestone for Amazon MGM Studios, as it had the biggest launch ever for the studio, as well for its pre-merger entities MGM and Amazon Studios. The film is directed by the team of Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, who are best known for writing and directing 21 Jump Street (2012) and The Lego Movie (2014). The filmmakers both celebrated their upcoming film's hit trailer on X (formerly Twitter), and they announced that they would be joining Gosling, Project Hail Mary author Andy Weir and the film's screenwriter Drew Goddard for a panel at the San Diego Comic-Con. Gosling plays the bookish school teacher–turned–astronaut Ryland Grace in the forthcoming science-fiction film, which is adapted from Weir's 2021 novel of the same name. He looks completely different in a long haired wig and long, scruffy beard. Fans of this actor may be able to suss out his identity due to his soulful blue eyes, which give away his true identity no matter how different he looks from his everyday style. In the trailer, Ryan wakes up in this disheveled state, confused and wondering where he is. He has no memory of his past or how he ended up on the spaceship. His character states that he just woke up from a coma in outer space and is 'several light-years' away from his apartment. 'I'm not an astronaut,' he declares multiple times, as the trailer reveals the event leading up to him going to space. Ryland is a middle school teacher with a PhD in molecular biology. But his life is turned upside down when he is recruited by a space force to figure out why the stars, including the sun, are dying out. As the trailer goes on it is revealed the stars were infected with something deadly and it is Ryland's job to find out why. Ryland's mission to space is a 'Hail Mary,' last ditch effort to stop the stars from dying and save all life forms. He expresses hesitancy at being tasked to save all life, saying, 'I understand the stakes, I do. But my place is in the classroom.' He did not want to go to space but when he was told he'd die along with everyone else, he changed his mind. At the end of the trailer, Ryland declares that he's met an alien and he tries to teach it Hacky Sack and how to do a thumbs-up. It is revealed that the alien has been tasked with the same job as Ryland. He needs to figure out how to save his species. The trailer features Harry Styles' Sign of the Times as it follows Ryland's attempts to save, essentially, the universe. The film is directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller and hits theaters on March 20, 2026. The first footage of the film debuted at CinemaCon in Las Vegas. Sandra Hüller's character ominously says, 'The sun is not the only star dying. If we do nothing, everything on this planet will go extinct.' At CinemaCon, Gosling took a playful swipe at his directors, saying of Lord and Miller, 'They are only happy if they make you do the very rare and coveted laugh-cry.' 'It's an insanely ambitious story that's massive in scope, and it seemed really hard to make, and that's kind of our bag,' Gosling said about the film at CinemaCon, per Variety. After waking up on his journey in a bedraggled stage, Ryland shaves his tangled beard off and breaks down in tears at the enormity of the mission he's been tasked with. He continued: 'This is why we go to the movies. And I'm not just saying it because I'm in it. I'm also saying it because I'm a producer on the film.' Project Hail Mary also features Sandra Hüller, known for 2023's Oscar-winning foreign-language films The Zone of Interest and Anatomy of a Fall, as well as the 2016 comedy Toni Erdmann. who is best known as the director of The Cabin In the Woods and the screenwriter of hits including Coverfield, World War Z and The Martian, which may have helped prepare him for the sci-fi stylings of Project Hail Mary.
