Everything You Missed at the Cincinnati Music Festival [PHOTOS + VIDEOS]
The 2025 Cincinnati Music Festival (CMF) was a full-on takeover this year. Live broadcasts, surprise performances, emotional tributes, legends— you name it *Shirley Caesar voice*! Even when the weather tried to put us down, there wasn't a dull moment anywhere downtown. If you missed it, we got you covered… Thursday The weekend jumped off early with Rickey Smiley and the crew broadcasting live on Fountain Square. The energy was right. A crowd gathered well before sunrise, and by 6 a.m., the Square was already packed. That night, it was all about the culture. The 'Celebration of Hip-Hop' at the Andrew J. Brady Music Center brought heat to the stage with Young MC, Sugarhill Gang & The Furious Five, Scarface, and Goodie Mob. It was a true ode to the genre and era that laid the foundation for so much of today's sound. Friday Another early morning on Fountain Square for the Rickey Smiley Morning Show but Friday hit different. It was 91 degrees by 7 a.m. and still, people showed up ready. Why? Ice Cube pulled up. He surprised the crowd, and then casually performed 'It Was a Good Day' and 'You Can Do It.' Totally unplanned. Friday night back inside Paycor Stadium, The Zapp Band featuring Dreion brought the funk. PJ Morton and Anthony Hamilton gave us the soul. Then Jazmine Sullivan hit the stage, for her first Cincy performance in over a decade, and let everybody have it. 'Lions, Tigers, and Bears.' 'Girl Like Me.' 'Pick Up Your Feelings.' She took the stadium to CHUCH (yes it's spelled right), I almost threw a shoe. Earth, Wind & Fire had every section up out their seats and moving. They ran through decades of hits, the kind you grew up on. Only two of the original members were present, but that didn't stop them from delivering a 10/10 experience. You couldn't tell anybody in that stadium that it wasn't 1979 again. Saturday Saturday afternoon was busy on all fronts. Over at the Heritage Bank Center, Ice Cube's BIG3: Summer in the City game tipped off at 1 p.m. The roster was stacked: Dwight Howard, Jeff Ayers, Lance Stephenson, and more. Coaching legends like Nancy Lieberman, Gary Payton, and Julius Erving were locked in courtside. Halftime brought performances by DJ Paul of Three 6 Mafia and Cincinnati's own Skylar Blatt. Saturday night at the stadium had no skips, almost. 112. The Bar-Kays. Lucky Daye. All came with high energy for the final night. Then the queen herself, Toni Braxton, glided on stage in a sizzling red fit and gave us everything from 'He Wasn't Man Enough', 'Please', and 'Just Be a Man About It.' She took a pause to honor her late sister Traci Braxton, then wrapped with an unforgettable performance of 'Unbreak My Heart'. Just as LL Cool J took the stage, the weather pulled a stunt. A lightning warning hit mid-show and the crowd was asked to shelter in the concourse. Many thought that was the end of the night, but it was only a short delay. About 45 minutes later, Uncle L was back with 'Luv U Better', 'I Need Love', and 'Mama Said Knock You Out.' Then the plot twist of the weekend… REV RUN joined him on stage. The entire stadium went up in flames, because who would've thunk it?! RELATED: LL Cool J Surprises Cincinnati Music Festival with a Hip-Hop Pioneer The finale rolled right into a tribute to Frankie Beverly, featuring original Maze member Roame Lowry and guitarist JuBu Smith. Joe opened the tribute with 'Can't Get Over You.' Maze founder Roame Lowry followed up with heartfelt words and the origin story about Maze. After 7 and Raheem DeVaughn continued the salute, then in walked Mr. Bigg himself— Ronald Isley. Dressed in crispy all white and backed by JuBu, the Lincoln Heights legend delivered a smooth, joyful version of 'Golden Time of Day.' A perfect full-circle moment to end a stacked weekend. 5 charged after viral Cincinnati fight amid outcry from JD Vance, Elon Musk
A fight in downtown Cincinnati over the weekend resulted in five people facing charges, as well as outcry from local and federal officials after apparent videos from the incident circulated online. Cincinnati Police Chief Teresa Theetge announced the charges against the five unidentified individuals during a news conference on Monday, July 28. Although only five people were charged, she said the fight involved "100 or so" individuals, adding that there were "well over 150,000 people" in the downtown area at the time for a Big3 basketball tournament, a Cincinnati Reds game and the Cincinnati Music Festival. "This was a sudden dispute between individuals following a verbal altercation," Theetge said. Alleged videos from the fight have been shared on social media, leading to criticism from politicians and media figures, including Vice President JD Vance, Vance's half-brother and mayoral candidate Cory Bowman and Elon Musk. Here's what we know about the incident and the response from police. Cory Bowman shares videos on Facebook Bowman posted clips on his Facebook page that were allegedly from the fight. In one of the videos, a group of people is seen striking a man until he falls to the ground as they continue to punch and kick him. Shortly after, another man is seen punching a woman in the face, causing her to fall to the ground, where she remained motionless until a person helped pick her back up. "More violence from Friday night in downtown Cincinnati," Bowman wrote in a Facebook post on July 26. He also alleged that there was no "delegated dispatcher" on duty for the music festival at the time of the incident, which he wrote, "reinforces what we've known, that major problems exist in the (Emergency Communications Center) relating to crime in the city." Police chief says response time was 'acceptable' In response to criticisms of police response times, Theetge said that only one individual called the police. She added that the department received the initial call at 3:06 a.m., and the first officers arrived on the scene at 3:12 a.m. "Based on body cam, that response time is completely acceptable," according to Theetge, who added that when officers arrived, "The majority of the participants were gone." As of Tuesday, July 29, Theetge or police have not shared whether anyone was hospitalized due to the fight. USA TODAY contacted Theetge and the police department on Tuesday, July 29, but did not receive an immediate response. Elon Musk, JD Vance condemn the Cincinnati fight While the fight is still being investigated, some political leaders have commented on videos of the alleged incident circulating online. Vance spoke about it on July 28 during a visit to Metallus, a steel manufacturer in Canton. The vice president, who owns a home in Cincinnati, acknowledged he did not know the full story behind the video, but he said he watched it after Ohio Sen. Bernie Moreno shared it with him. He added that the instigators of the incident were "lawless thugs." "How many of you all have wanted to go to downtown Akron or downtown Canton or downtown Columbus for a meal, but you're worried because the local authorities in these big cities have allowed lawlessness to run wild? We have got to make great American cities safe again for families and children," Vance said. Musk commented on the fight after reposting an alleged video of the incident, which another user shared on X. The Tesla CEO and SpaceX founder wrote underneath the video, "That guy almost killed this woman. Aggravated assault." City officials speak out against violence Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval spoke out against the violence that transpired in his city over the weekend, saying in a statement, "I am outraged by the vicious fight that occurred Downtown." "It is horrifying to watch, and this unacceptable and disgusting behavior is intolerable in any part of our community," the Democratic mayor's statement continued. Pureval added that he's been in "consistent communication" with Theetge. "Our police have been working around the clock to investigate and bring perpetrators of violence to justice," he said. Theetge also voiced her disapproval of the fight during the news conference on Monday, saying, "I am in complete disgust waking up to the viral video many of you have now seen." "The behavior displayed is nothing short of cruel and absolutely unacceptable ... Our investigative team is working diligently to identify every individual involved in causing harm," she added. Five charged after video of violent altercation in Cincinnati goes viral
Police are investigating a violent altercation involving multiple people in downtown Cincinnati on Saturday night after video of the brawl went viral on social media. Police Chief Teresa Theetge said that the incident 'was a sudden dispute between individuals following a verbal altercation' and that it was not connected to the Cincinnati Music Festival, which was happening at the same time. Theetge said she is 'in complete disgust waking up to the viral video' of the incident circulating online. 'The behavior displayed is nothing short of cruel and absolutely unacceptable,' she said in a statement Sunday. 'Our investigative team is working diligently to identify every individual involved in causing harm.' Five people face charges, Theetge told reporters Monday. She declined to identify the suspects or provide more details about their alleged crimes. Those records remain sealed, she said, and some of those who have been charged have not been located. Theetge said she expects more charges. Alcohol was likely to have played a "significant part" in an altercation, which authorities received only one 911 call about, she said. "For us to have 100 or so people down there, involved in or watching this event, recording with their cellphones, and for us to get only one phone call of this incident is unacceptable," she said. Videos circulating online show a chaotic scene involving at least a dozen people. In one video, a few men can be seen standing face-to-face, having what appears to be a verbal altercation, before one man seems to hit another in the face. That seems to set off a full-blown physical altercation, in which the man who threw the first hit is beaten by multiple people in the middle of a street. The violence includes kicks and stomps to his face. The crowd also appears to attack two other men who appear to know the man being beaten. In another video, a woman trying to defend him gets knocked unconscious by someone in the crowd. Blood can be seen running from her mouth as she lies on the ground. It is not clear what happened before the videos were recorded. The incident got much attention on social media over the weekend, particularly on Elon Musk's X, where many high-profile right-wing accounts, such as LibsofTikTok and End Wokeness, framed the fight as an assault by a Black 'mob' on a white couple. Musk himself published posts decrying the fight and calling for mainstream media attention. He did not mention race in his post. Prominent Republican politicians also weighed in, with Vice President JD Vance answering a question Monday about the fight, saying he saw a 'mob of lawless thugs beating up on an innocent person.' Vance's half-brother, Cory Bowman, is running for mayor of Cincinnati and will face the incumbent, Aftab Pureval, in November. Pureval said he was outraged by the fight, calling it 'horrifying to watch' and 'intolerable' in any part of the city. He said he is confident that arrests are 'forthcoming.' 'That's not who we are as a city,' Pureval said in a statement Monday. 'Since the fight occurred, I have been in consistent communication with Chief Theetge, and our police have been working around the clock to investigate and bring perpetrators of violence to justice.' Pureval reiterated that the altercation was not connected to the Cincinnati Music Festival, Cincinnati Reds games, the Big3 basketball tournament 'or any of the large events that took place over the weekend.'
