Will rare Volkswagen Citi Golf find new home for a cool R1m?
A VW Citi Golf Mk1 Limited Edition, with 29km on the clock, took bidding at an auction in Bryanston last week to R550 000. The Citizen reports this lofty number that many enthusiasts thought would see the iconic car go to a new owner. But the reserve price was not met, and rumour has it that this number was almost double that at a staggering R1m. The original owner would have paid R113 500 for the car off the dealer's floor in November 2009. According to a South African inflation calculator, R100 in 2009 is worth R216.76 in 2025. And this translates into a price of only R246 022 today. But we all know that nothing over the past 16 years has gone up by the rate of inflation. Low mileage key Rather take a basic return on a R100 000 investment at a local bank, using a rate of 9%. Then the value of this VW Citi Golf Mk1 Limited Edition rises to a more realistic R450 000. Maybe the price offered at R550 000 is not a bad one, but the real value with a car like this is that it's number three of the last 1 000 Citi Golfs ever produced. And when you add in the fact that it is like new with only delivery mileage on the clock, R1-million might just be the magic number. Time will tell. The introduction of the VW Citi Mk1 in 2009 was a send-off and the closing of the final chapter of the best-ever selling hatchback in South African motoring history at the time. Citi had provided South African motorists with a fun, unique, affordable driving package for 25 years. It had defied all marketing norms and theories of how long a lifecycle of model in a brand can continue. Volkswagen of South Africa introduced the Golf 1 in 1978. And the Citi Golf made its first appearance on South African roads in 1984. The Citi was a more affordable alternative to bigger more expensive 'Jumbo' Golf IIs that hit our roads in the same year. Various Citi Golf editions The VW Citi Golf stayed fresh over the years by the ongoing introduction of special and limited-edition models such as the Designa, CTI, Deco, Sonic, Wolf, Bafana Bafana, R Line, Xcite, Billabong and GTS. The Citi Golf Mk1 features the 74kW 1.6-litre fuel injected engine and not the iconic 1.8-litre powertrain from the legendary GTi and CTi. It also came fitted with 15-inch, gunmetal painted alloy wheels; polished exhaust tailpipe, dark taillights, double headlights and chrome highlight around grille. The interior has sport seats with partial leather, leather steering wheel, the original golf ball gear knob, floor mats with Mk1 logo and red stitching detail throughout. And the car was only available in two colours; Black and Shadow Blue metallic.

Very rare VW Citi Golf set to fetch big bucks at local auction
Iconic V8 muscle cars in the form of Ford Capril Perana V8 and Chev Firenza also under the hammer. Ever dreamed of owning a Volkswagen Citi Golf Mk 1? Now you can when a modern interpretation of a truly South African classic car goes under the hammer on Saturday 12 July at the Creative Rides Winter Auction in Bryanston. The auction starts at 11am in its showroom and will showcase a collection of 40 classic and collector cars. Citi Golf for the ages Up for grabs is a 2010 VW Citi Golf Mk I LTD. This hot hatch is Car No 003 of the final 1 000-unit Citi Golf series and only has 29km on the clock. With the mileage, and heritage, the bidding on this Citi Golf is going to be fierce amongst VW collectors. Cars No 001 and 002 reside in the VW Museum in Wolfsburg and the Autopavilion in Uitenhage, leaving this one as the only privately available example from the trio. In a complete swing to the other side of the cubic capacity spectrum are two iconic V8 muscle cars of the past in the form of a Ford Capril Perana V8 and Chev Firenza. The Ford Capri Perana V8 was a car that earned its stripes on both the road and racetrack around the country in the early 1970s. Developed by the legendary Basil Green, the Capril Perana V8 delivered Ferrari-like performance at a fraction of the price back in the day. Hitting 100 km/h in a just 6.7 seconds and topping out at 228km/h, it was the country's fastest car for many years. The Ford Capri Perana V8 was Mzansi's fastest car at one stage. Equally significant at the time was the Chev Firenza Can Am. It was brought to life by racing legend Basil van Rooyen to go straight after the Ford Capri Perana V8 on the track and the road. Built to house a potent Z28 302ci V8 from Chevrolet's Trans Am program, only 100 homologation specials were produced. This example up for auction here has a correct chassis plate and signature features like the aluminium rear wing and black-on-white paintwork. But it now houses a 350ci V8 motor, and not the original powertrain. This said, original examples are nearly impossible to find, making this a once-in-a-generation opportunity for collectors. Both of which are uniquely South African interpretations of Australian classics. The Ford Fairmont GT, based on the Australian Ford Falcon GT, retains its original white paint, factory shaker hood scoop, chrome GT hubcaps, and has just 37 000 km indicated mileage on the clock. Meanwhile, the bright orange Chevy SS, based on the Holden Monaro GTS, features a 350ci V8 and 27 800 km indicated mileage. Creative Rides CEO Kevin Derrick says: 'The ingenuity of South African manufacturers during the 1970s and 1980s continues to amaze me. These cars were not only world-class for their time, but today they represent a unique blend of local heritage and global desirability. From V8 muscle to homologation specials, we're proud to present vehicles that are both historically significant and emotionally charged for collectors.' The Creative Rides auction is streamed live for remote bidders around the globe.

Joburg Creative Rides auction to feature rare eight‑cylinder classics
Rounding off the Germany/SA classics is a 2010 Volkswagen Citi Golf Mk I LTD 003, the third car of the final 1,000-unit Citi Golf series with only 29km on the odometer. Cars No 001 and 002 reside in the VW Museum in Wolfsburg and the Autopavilion in Kariega, Qqeberha, leaving this as the only privately available example from the trio. There's also a 2007 Golf R32 on offer. Two-wheel classics include Honda CB1100R motorcycles — a 1981 RB model and a 1982 RC which were produced in small numbers of about 100 units for endurance racing homologation. 'The ingenuity of SA manufacturers during the 1970s and 1980s continues to amaze me. The cars and bikes were not only world-class for their time, but today they represent a unique blend of local heritage and global desirability,' said Creative Rides CEO Kevin Derrick.
