Grab your shovel and load up free compost in Orillia

The City of Orillia has extra compost to give away. 'Residents can pick up compost until August 30, or while supplies last,' the City stated in a Tuesday social media post. Grab your shovel and containers and load up free compost, now available at the Waste Diversion Site at 100 Kitchener Street or at the new location at Morningstar Park at 1125 Mississaga Street West. Residents must load their own compost, but staff will assist as required with larger, commercial pick-ups. 'This is a great opportunity for residents to enrich their gardens and landscaping with nutrient-rich compost generated through the City's green bin and yard waste programs,' the City stated. Compost is no longer available at Kitchener Park, the City added. 'We apologize for the inconvenience.'

Potential scam involves person claiming to be city by-law officer, snatching residents' money

The City of Orillia is warning residents about a potential scam involving a person falsely claiming to be a city by-law officer and attempting to collect money from residents at their home. The city was recently notified about a concerning incident where a resident was approached at their home by someone posing as a by-law officer. The resident said they were asked to provide payment on the spot for a violation related to tall grass and weeds. The city wants to remind you that Orillia by-law officers never collect fine or penalty payments at your door. Any legitimate fines or penalties issued through the city must be paid through official channels like the Orillia City Centre, online or by mail. All legitimate officers wear distinctive blue uniforms bearing the official logo and carrying city-issued identification badges. Officers will never request payment in cash or on-site at a home. If a resident is approached by someone claiming to be a by-law officer, they should report the incident to police. 'Public safety is our top priority, and we want residents to be cautious and informed,' said Shawn Crawford, Director of Legislative, Building, Parking, and Transit Services. 'City by-law officers are always identifiable and follow proper protocols. If something feels off, trust your instincts and report it.' For more information on this scam, residents can call 705-325-2313.

Photo radar cameras activated in Orillia: Here's what you need to know

Motorists in Orillia will need to pump the brakes with two new automated speed cameras in action this week. A memo on Wednesday from the City says photo radar cameras stationed at Park Street and Fittons Road West will be operational 24/7 starting this week, with reduced speed limits of 40 kilometres per hour through those areas. The new Community Safety Zones with 40km/h speed limits were introduced in April, and include Fittons Road West, Park Street, and Westmount Drive South, which were identified as priority locations based on speed and safety following a data-driven review conducted by city staff. Fines are increased for traffic violations in Community Safety Zones. 'Do the limit. Don't get a ticket,' the City stated. Signage warning motorists about the coming cameras had been in place for the required 90 days before activation. Motorists will now notice replacement signs reading 'Speed Camera in Use.' Tickets are issued if a speed camera captures a vehicle exceeding the posted limit. The photo is then reviewed by a Provincial Offences Officer, and a ticket is sent, along with the image, to the registered plate owner, which must be paid or disputed within 30 days. The penalty is a fine, no demerit points are applied. The Westmount Drive South automated speed camera is not active at this time. The City didn't provide a timeline for when it would be operational. Orillia seeks public feedback on city's response after historic ice storm

The City of Orillia is asking residents and businesses to share their experiences from the historic and destructive ice storm that hit the region at the end of March. Officials say the feedback will help improve the city's emergency response for future crises. The March storm is described as one of the worst weather events in Orillia's history. Heavy ice caused trees to snap and downed hydro lines, leaving thousands without power or phone service. It damaged roads, properties and other infrastructure. In the aftermath, the City declared a State of Emergency and activated its Emergency Operations Centre to coordinate relief efforts. Mayor Don McIsaac praised the community's resilience after the ice storm unleashed devastation. 'Our community showed incredible strength during the ice storm, and City staff and partners worked tirelessly to respond and recover,' the mayor stated. McIsaac emphasized the importance of reflecting on how the emergency unfolded and what can be learned from the event. 'Hearing directly from residents and businesses will help us strengthen our emergency response planning and will directly inform how we plan and respond to future emergencies,' the mayor added. To gather public input, the City launched an Ice Storm City Resident Survey, asking residents about their satisfaction with city communications, the effectiveness of services, whether any needs went unmet, and what challenges they faced. The City is also looking for suggestions on how to improve. Paper copies of the survey are available at the library at 36 Mississaga Street West, the Orillia City Centre at 50 Andrew Street South, and the rec centre at 255 West Street South. The survey will remain open until July 15.
