‘A beacon to the field': OpenAI advisers urge robust role for nonprofit

The company's board of directors thanked the commission and the community leaders who gave input in a statement, saying it was valuable in ensuring OpenAI's technology benefits everyone. 'As we carry this mission forward, we remain committed to listening, learning, and building in partnership with those on the front lines of change,' as part of the board's commitment to the nonprofit, the statement said. Vision for the nonprofit OpenAI announced last year it would make its nonprofit parent company a shareholder of a for-profit parent company, and tasked the commission with advising on how the new nonprofit could be most impactful. The company later changed course in May amid public pressure, saying its nonprofit would instead oversee a for-profit public benefit corporation. 'Even if those external things hadn't been in motion … we still would have landed on 'a nonprofit is a good thing in AI. We need more of them,'' Zingale said. 'Putting the nonprofit in charge is even better.' Bonta is already responsible for regulating the state's charities and making sure their resources aren't misused. But the commission — whose report repeatedly references the importance of the California and Delaware attorney generals' oversight over the nonprofit, due to where it's headquartered and incorporated — thinks Bonta should get more involved in the AI industry's development, much of which is housed in his state. 'We think it should be over AI more broadly, not just the one who chose to be a nonprofit,' said Zingale. 'We'd like to see that kind of oversight more evenly distributed across the sector.' The commission's vision for the nonprofit is far more ambitious than that of a traditional grant-making organization. It argues OpenAI's nonprofit should fund various democratic, economic and social causes to prepare society for AI's future disruptions, while also nurturing human pursuits in arts and culture. Those ideas span investments in statewide advocacy networks to gather public input on AI deployment, initiatives focused on algorithmic fairness in the workplace, apprenticeship pipelines within unions and AI literacy programs at libraries. They also want support for local museums, influencer cohorts and offline spaces. Among the more risk-focused proposals are that OpenAI fund environmental groups exploring the harms of AI, as well as independent safety research and efforts to pressure-test AI systems by mimicking hackers. Behind the scenes The commission has been holding meetings and taking written comments from California nonprofits, civic groups, faith-based institutions and others over the past three months. Altogether, more than 500 people and 100 organizations gave their feedback, including the YMCA, the Clinton Foundation and the Greenlining Institute.

Kevin Spacey calls for release of Epstein files: ‘Truth can't come soon enough'

Kevin Spacey has called for the Jeffrey Epstein files to be made public — saying 'the truth can't come soon enough' to help clear his name. 'Release the Epstein files. All of them,' tweeted Spacey, 65, who once flew on Epstein's 'Lolita Express' jet and posed on a Buckingham Palace throne with the pedophile's madam, Ghislaine Maxwell. 'For those of us with nothing to fear, the truth can't come soon enough,' stated 'The Usual Suspects' star. The Telegraph The Academy Award winner joined public clamor demanding the Department of Justice follow through on its promise to release troves of documents related to its investigation into the late pedophile, his associates and his death. Spacey previously addressed his connection to Epstein and the pedophile's madam, Maxwell, whom he was pictured with in 2002 in the throne room at Buckingham Palace after they were allegedly invited there by disgraced Epstein associate Prince Andrew. Advertisement He claimed he had not met the pair before they flew to London with President Bill Clinton on Epstein's private jet after a humanitarian event in Africa with 'young girls.' 'I didn't know him. I have never spent any time with him. I was with the Clinton Foundation people, that's who I was with,' he told Piers Morgan. 4 Kevin Spacey spoke to Piers Morgan about his connection to Epstein last year. Piers Morgan Uncensored Advertisement 'This Maxwell woman, she was one of many people to sit down next to me in that throne room. I have no relationship with her. I had no relationship with him. I mean he's not my friend. I am not a confidant. I've never spent time with him,' he continued. Spacey confirmed that there were 'young girls' on board the plane but claimed he never visited Epstein's island. 'I never went to Jeffrey Epstein's island. I did not know him and I never saw him or her after that morning at Buckingham Palace. He didn't even come to Buckingham Palace, she was only there,' he said. Spacey was also among the elites named in a trove of previously sealed court documents related to Jeffrey Epstein that were released in January. Advertisement 4 Epstein's 2019 death in a New York City jail has sparked years of conspiracy theories. US District Court for the Southe The Trump administration had promised to release the full files from Epstein's federal investigation as conspiracies swirled over the financier's associates and how he died after he was found dead in his Manhattan jail cell in 2019. But the Attorney General Pam Bondi last week announced that the government would not be releasing the records after all — with the President on Wednesday dismissing the outrcy for the documents the 'Epstein HOAX' as his MAGA-base demands answers. 4 The late financier's death was ruled a suicide by hanging. AP Trump spent months vowing to release all of the government's findings on Epstein and his associates — even publishing 'The Epstein Files: Phase 1 in February, although next to nothing new was revealed in those files. Spacey was accused of committing sex crimes against four men between 2004 and 2013 while he was serving as artistic director at London's historic Old Vic Theatre. He was ultimately acquitted of all nine counts in July 2023. The 'American Beauty' star also won a sexual abuse case against alleged victim and fellow actor Anthony Rapp in 2022.

Megyn Kelly, Chelsea Clinton spar in heated clash over flood relief, Epstein files: 'Family of grifters'

Megyn Kelly ripped into Chelsea Clinton after the former first daughter boasted about her Texas flood relief efforts – calling her a 'fake philanthropist' and the Clintons a 'family of grifters.' The former Fox News anchor, who hosts the 'The Megyn Kelly Show' podcast, tore into Bill and Hillary's only child after she posted on X last Wednesday that a subsidiary of the Clinton Foundation was 'on the ground in Texas, supporting families, communities and ongoing search and rescue efforts.' 4 Chelsea Clinton speaks onstage during the World Eating Disorder Action Day Summit in June. Getty Images for National Alliance for Eating Disorders Advertisement Social media users quickly jumped on Chelsea's call to action, accusing her family of defrauding governments through the Clinton Foundation and noting its ties to convicted pedophile Jeffrey Epstein. 'Why, are you guys planning on stealing money like you did in Haiti? To anyone out there please don't give to this organization. Give to local organizations only, like the Community Foundation of Texas Hill Country,' one user wrote in a post on X, referring to claims that the Clinton Foundation had pocketed millions of dollars for relief efforts in Haiti after a devastating earthquake struck in 2010. Kelly picked up on the growing backlash, posting on X: 'The replies to this post are AMAZING,' Kelly wrote on X. Advertisement Chelsea Clinton attempted to defuse the maelstrom. 'I'm sure any of the organizations I mentioned which are on the ground in Texas would welcome your support,' she replied to Kelly's post. 4 Megyn Kelly, host of 'The Megyn Kelly Show' podcast. Advertisement 'Chelsea, what we are seeing in the replies to your post is that while you love to play fake philanthropist, absolutely no one wants your family of grifters anywhere near those suffering in Texas, Haiti or anywhere else,' Kelly responded. In a final retort, Clinton defended her family's foundation. 'Hi Megyn – we're proud to partner with & support these organizations. I don't receive a cent & never have from these or @ClintonFdn. Supporting vital work in Texas matters most now. Hope you will highlight relief efforts on your @x timeline – apologies if I missed them – & show.' 4 Jeffrey Epstein with Bill Clinton. The Clinton Foundation directed The Post to a fact-check page on its website. 'The facts are clear and well-documented — all money collected by the Clinton Foundation for Haiti was immediately directed to help in the wake of the devastating earthquake in 2010,' the foundation said on its website. 'The Clinton Foundation worked with our partners to deploy resources on the ground, and we did not take a penny for overhead or charge any administrative fee.' 4 A destroyed vehicle sits next to the Guadalupe River in Hunt, Texas after flash floods devastated the area. AP Some social media users also nodded to the family's ties to Epstein, who 'was part of the original group that conceived the Clinton Global Initiative,' according to a letter written by Epstein's attorneys to federal prosecutors in 2007. That letter was part of plea negotiations concerning sex abuse allegations filed by Virginia Giuffre, who claimed she was lured into a sex-trafficking ring by Epstein when she was 15 and working at Trump's Mar-a-Lago club. Giuffre died by suicide in April at 41 at her farm in western Australia. A spokesman for Bill Clinton previously said he took 'four trips' on Epstein's plane, all included stops related to the work of the Clinton Foundation. Advertisement Kelly is one of several conservatives who have blasted the Trump administration after it recently claimed Epstein did not have a 'client list' – after Attorney General Pam Bondi earlier this year replied to a question about the list that 'it's sitting on my desk right now to review.' 'She [Bondi] repeatedly misled on Epstein. Then didn't have the courage to explain herself. Suddenly, she's camera shy & no Qs allowed. Good luck!' Kelly wrote in a post on X over the weekend.

Chelsea Clinton And Megyn Kelly Go To War Over Texas Relief Efforts

and just went head-to-head in a heated exchange that erupted over social media, and it's safe to say, the gloves came off. The former Fox News anchor took aim at Clinton after the former First Daughter posted about her family's philanthropic response to . The clash between Megyn Kelly and Chelsea Clinton unfolded on X (formerly Twitter) in a heated showdown last week. "Members of the @ClintonGlobal community are on the ground in Texas, supporting families, communities, and ongoing search and rescue efforts," Chelsea wrote in a post, listing several organizations participating in the relief. But it didn't take long for critics to flood the replies with accusations. Social media users slammed the Clinton Foundation, reviving decade-old claims about alleged misuse of funds in post-earthquake Haiti and questioning the family's historic ties to , who, according to his lawyers, helped conceive the Clinton Global Initiative back in 2005. Megyn Kelly clearly enjoyed the pile-on, reposting Clinton's message with a jab of her own, 'The responses to this is AMAZING.' Chelsea didn't back down, tagging Kelly in a direct clapback. 'Hi Megyn, I'm sure any of the organizations I mentioned which are on the ground in Texas would welcome your support," she said. "I'd be happy to put you in touch directly. We all need to support those impacted by the tragic floods in Kerr County and surrounding areas.' That only fueled Kelly's fire. 'Chelsea, what we are seeing in the replies to your post is that while you love to play fake philanthropist, absolutely no one wants your family of grifters anywhere near those suffering in Texas, Haiti or anywhere else,' she wrote. In a final attempt to defend herself and the foundation, Clinton replied, 'I don't receive a cent & never have from these or @ClintonFdn. Supporting vital work in Texas matters most now. Hope you will highlight relief efforts on your @x timeline, apologies if I missed them, and show.' Kelly didn't respond further, but the replies to Clinton's post stayed lit with criticism. Many doubled down on long-standing conspiracy theories, despite the fact that the Clinton Foundation was exonerated in 2019 following several federal investigations. As for the Epstein connection, his legal team once admitted he had a hand in launching the Clinton Global Initiative during plea negotiations in 2007. 'Mr. Epstein was part of the original group that conceived the Clinton Global Initiative, which is described as a project 'bringing together a community of global leaders to devise and implement innovative solutions to some of the world's most pressing challenges,'' attorneys Alan Dershowitz and Gerald Lefcourt wrote in a letter, per Daily Caller, that resurfaced years later. While Epstein's name was never officially listed in CGI's founding documents, Lefcourt doubled down on his client's role in the initiative's formation during a 2016 interview with ABC News. The initiative, launched in 2005 as a branch of the Clinton Foundation, was designed to connect world leaders to address major global issues. Epstein also donated $25,000 to the Clinton Foundation in 2006 through his own charity, following a close personal relationship with Bill Clinton that began during a high-profile trip to Africa in 2002. Epstein died in 2019 while awaiting trial for sex trafficking charges. While the online war of words between Megyn Kelly and Chelsea Clinton grabbed national attention, the situation on the ground in Texas remains dire. Just 10 days after catastrophic flooding claimed at least 132 lives across the state, central Texas was hit with another round of relentless rain over the weekend. In Kerr County alone, where Chelsea initially directed her relief message, 106 people were killed after the Guadalupe River surged more than 20 feet on July 4. The devastation has only continued. Over the weekend, an additional 6 to 10 inches of rainfall caused rivers like the Llano, Lampasas, and San Saba to overflow, prompting more evacuations and stalling ongoing search and rescue operations. As the flood crisis unfolds, it's clear the focus must return to the lives lost, the people still missing, and the families in urgent need of help.

Megyn Kelly and Chelsea Clinton clash in furious online spat over flood relief and Epstein files

Megyn Kelly and Chelsea Clinton had a fiery back-and-forth over the former First Daughter's social media posts about disaster relief in flood-stricken central Texas. Kelly, 54, kicked off the war of the words by responding to Clinton's X post about her family's philanthropic work in the area. 'Members of the @ClintonGlobal community are on the ground in Texas, supporting families, communities and ongoing search and rescue efforts,' Clinton wrote on Wednesday, while listing several other relief agencies responding to the disaster. Commenters were quick to pile on to Clinton's posts, accusing her family of everything from stealing government funds to having links to Jeffrey Epstein. Several revived claims that the Clinton Foundation cashed in on development projects in the aftermath of a catastrophic earthquake that hit Haiti in 2010. Others brought up the Clintons' connection to Epstein, who was part of the original group that conceived of the Clinton Global Initiative. 'The responses to this is AMAZING,' Kelly wrote on X alongside Clinton's original post. Clinton then ratcheted things up by addressing Kelly directly. 'Hi Megyn - I'm sure any of the organizations I mentioned which are on the ground in Texas would welcome your support. I would be happy to put you in touch directly. We all need to support those impacted by the tragic floods in Kerr county and surrounding areas.' Kelly then took the opportunity to rip into Clinton and her family. 'Chelsea, what we are seeing in the replies to your post is that while you love to play fake philanthropist, absolutely no one wants your family of grifters anywhere near those suffering in Texas, Haiti or anywhere else,' the former Fox News host wrote. Clinton responded again, appearing to defend herself against any accusations. 'I don't receive a cent & never have from these or @ClintonFdn,' she wrote. 'Supporting vital work in Texas matters most now. Hope you will highlight relief efforts on your @x timeline - apologies if I missed them - & show.' Kelly - one of several conservatives to express frustration last week after the Justice Department's findings that Epstein never even kept a 'client list' - decided to end the feud there. Comments blasting the Clinton Global Initiative and Clinton Foundation continued in the replies. The foundation was accused of wrongdoing in Haiti, including a bribery and pay-to-play scheme. 'Chelsea, what we are seeing in the replies to your post is that while you love to play fake philanthropist, absolutely no one wants your family of grifters anywhere near those suffering in Texas, Haiti or anywhere else,' Kelly wrote in one post It was exonerated following several federal investigation in 2019.
