Chargers' new uniforms: 3 alternates revealed, old Color Rush retired

A team spokesman told USA TODAY Sports that both Color Rush versions used from 2020 to '24, one navy and the other Royal Blue, were retired in favor of the new alternates. This will mark the first time since 2006, when they were still based in San Diego, that the Chargers will don blue helmets. "We've always considered ourselves to be leaders in the uniform space," said team president of business operations A.G. Spanos said in a statement. "We take pride in the fact that the Chargers are widely considered to have the best uniforms in the NFL; some even argue in all of sports. One of the main reasons for that is our continued push to evolve, authentically, with every opportunity." (No argument there.) Shop new LA Chargers NFL jerseys just hits, no misses — Los Angeles Chargers (@chargers) July 15, 2025 Since changing their uniforms in 2007, the Chargers have exclusively worn white helmets, albeit different variations depending on whether or not jersey numbers were included and/or the color of the lightning bolt. Prior to 2007, the Bolts mostly featured what is now called the "Super Chargers" uniform - the team dubbed it as a "modern throwback" - a design that had succeeded the Air Coryell version, which featured Royal Blue, in 1988. Led by Seau, the team made its lone Super Bowl appearance in the predominantly navy look to cap the 1994 season. Tomlinson scored a single-season NFL record 31 touchdowns in it in 2006, when he was also named the league's MVP. And yet since joining the NFL in 1970, the Chargers' best run arguably occurred under Hall of Fame coach Don Coryell and quarterback Dan Fouts, who led the team to four consecutive playoff berths from 1979 to '82, losing the AFC championship game twice during that stretch - including the notorious "Freezer Bowl" in Cincinnati, when a minus-59 degree wind chill grounded an offense which ranked No. 1 overall five times between the 1980 and '85 campaigns. RANKING NFL UNIFORMS WORST TO BEST: Who looks good? Who doesn't? Where do Chargers, Bucs check in after new reveals? Those teams helped revolutionize the passing game in the NFL, Fouts throwing for 4,802 yards in 1981, a record at the time. "It was wonderful. It really was," Fouts said via a team news release Tuesday. "As a quarterback, one of the great, unique things you can do is quiet your own crowd. I had to do that so often so the team could hear my signals at the line of scrimmage. Charger Power was real, it wasn't just a slogan on a T-shirt. That stadium was absolutely alive every time we took the field. We had to calm everyone down, they were so excited." While the team hasn't reproduced uniforms like the ones Fouts and his teammates wore - think Kellen Winslow, Charlie Joiner, John Jefferson, Wes Chandler and Chuck Muncie, among others - the club said of the new "Charger Power" look: "While the all-gold 'Charger Power' uniforms are the first of their kind to be worn by the Bolts, they manage to still evoke a sense of familiarity and capture the energy of a revolutionary chapter in Chargers football." The organization has never worn the NFL crown, blown out 49-26 by the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl 29. However, prior to the merger in 1970, the Bolts did win the AFL title in 1963. the best got better. again. — Los Angeles Chargers (@chargers) July 15, 2025 The "Charger Power" uniforms will be initially worn for Legends Weekend against the Indianapolis Colts on Oct. 19. The "Super Chargers" navy throwbacks will debut four days later against the Minnesota Vikings on "Thursday Night Football," when former Bolts safety Rodney Harrison will be inducted into the team's Hall of Fame. Since updating their current uniforms, which coincided with the club's move into SoFi Stadium in 2020, the Chargers have worn six different uniform combinations, including the new-defunct Color Rush options. They were 0-6 in those navy alternates, which featured dark pants, jerseys and lightning bolts on the white helmet. Spanos said the new powder blue pants cater to a request from fans. "Pretty soon after our 2020 uniform launch we began getting the question, 'Why don't you have powder blue pants?' We heard it from fans and players alike," he said. "Everyone wanted what we knew was probably a missing look, but rules only allowed for so many pant options and we were at our limit. We knew this time around we needed to be creative in how we could incorporate them into our uniform kit, and we're excited to bring even more versatility to our primary look for 2025 and beyond." Surprise: Saints tease new uniforms reveal sure to please Cameron Jordan

As previously reported, Saints schedule the reveal for July 22 First, the white next? 🤔#Saints | @CaesarsEnt It's been a bit of a roller coaster for the New Orleans Saints uniforms beat this offseason. It was previously reported that the Saints would be introducing alternate uniforms and matching new helmets on July 22 -- only for that date to be moved up to July 9 with the reveal of white-and-gold lids to go with the team's popular "Color Rush" jerseys. For a time, it looked like the Saints wouldn't be getting new uniforms after all. But that might not be the case. On Tuesday, July 15, the Saints shared a promo video teasing something else. Cameron Jordan, who has long lobbied for the team to bring back the gold jerseys they last wore in 2002, is seen strutting into the locker room carrying a Saints-branded gold duffel bag, lit from the inside with a flashing amber light. A strobing effect obscures a shadowy figure wearing a helmet and uniform. Take these hints together and it sure looks like the team is rolling out new jerseys (and maybe another helmet) on July 22. See for yourself: A soft rebrand with fresh white helmets to go with the "Color Rush" uniforms and an all-new gold set would be a welcome change. The Saints are going in a new direction without any of Sean Payton's influence on the team; it's taken some time but they're finally getting out from under his shadow. Ushering in a new era with new jerseys isn't a bad idea. And it's not like the team is getting rid of their usual home and away uniforms. This just helps distance themselves from the last four years of futile football. And bringing back the gold uniforms Jordan has always wanted could signal the end of the line for him, too. This is his last year under contract with the team and he figures to play more of a pass-rush specialist role with young guys like Chase Young and Carl Granderson taking over as starters, giving Jordan opportunities to sack a couple of quarterbacks and help his Hall of Fame resume. He leads all active players with 121.5 sacks (Von Miller is technically ahead of him with 129.5, but has not signed with a team for 2025) and ranks 22nd all-time. Giving Jordan what he's asked for could be a nice sendoff. We'll find out what the Saints have been cooking up on July 22.

New Orleans Saints to debut white alternate helmet during 2025 season

The New Orleans Saints have a new head coach, a new quarterback and now a new alternate helmet. The Saints unveiled the white helmet Wednesday and announced that they will pair it with their all-white, throwback-inspired "Color Rush" uniforms. The white shell is adorned with tiny black flakes, and the heart of the tricolor stripe down the middle seems to be the old gold that matches the one used in the Saints' "Color Rush" jerseys. The helmet stripe, outlined in black, as well as in a thinner set of white lines, also features faint, mini fleur-de-lis. Advertisement The primary fleur-de-lis logo is gold — as opposed to its usual black color — with the thick, Sharpie-like black outline we're accustomed to seeing. The front bumper reads "SAINTS," whereas the back says "NEW ORLEANS" in a larger font. And, notably, the face mask is gold, too. The helmet is widely being received as a major upgrade to the black alternate the Saints introduced to their wardrobe in 2022. That one had a tapered stripe of distinct, gold mini fleur-de-lis. The stripe itself was much wider in the front than this year's alternate. It also had a black cage to match the black shell. Advertisement A white helmet is a first for the Saints, and so is a gold mask. The team has yet to announce which games it will wear the alternate helmet in 2025. New Orleans is embarking on a new chapter under head coach Kellen Moore, who won the Super Bowl this past season as the Philadelphia Eagles' offensive coordinator. The Saints drafted 25-year-old quarterback Tyler Shough in the second round of this year's draft, and there's a good chance he's New Orleans' Week 1 starter now that Derek Carr is retired. Together, they signify the next era of Saints football. The white alternate helmet will be part of the fold as well.

Saints won't be getting new jerseys after all, but these alternate helmets are a hit

New uniforms are coming as soon as 2026 Let's start with the good news -- the New Orleans Saints released a first look at their very clean white helmets for the 2025 season, a breath of fresh air for a team in need of a new look. These white-and-gold helmets are almost a palette swap of the black alternate helmets they rolled out a few years ago, but after going 0-4 in them, change was needed. Now the bad news. Contrary to previous reporting, the Saints are not getting new uniforms to go with them. So fans will have the same jersey options as before. But it's not all bad. These helmets were specifically designed to match the popular "Color Rush" jerseys that have become a mainstay for New Orleans, and they'll be worn together exclusively this season, per Nick Underhill. And now some more good news. New uniforms are coming, eventually, as part of the NFL's new "Rivalries" program with Nike. They'll receive fresh jerseys with the rest of the NFC South as soon as 2026, but the initiative is planned to run through 2028 until all 32 NFL teams have been included. So we'll just have to practice patience. That's a good decision. While the Saints' initial black alternate helmets may have looked a little overbaked, the main problem with them was how they clashed with the teams' "Color Rush" kits. By keeping a similar design philosophy but inverting the colors to match the jerseys, you've got a much better fit. Look good, feel good, play good. Let's hope a small change like this pays off when the season starts on Sept. 7.
