Commanders Named 'Perfect' Landing Spot For Steelers Standout

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources.
As training camp nears, the Washington Commanders are one of many teams dealing with a key player holding out for a new contract. While they attempt to rectify their own situation, they've been tossed out as a possible landing spot for another disgruntled high-level talent.
Coming off a season where he notched 1,096 yards and a career-high 13 touchdowns, Terry McLaurin is in search of a new deal with the Commanders. He is currently in the final year of his contract and is seeking some form of long-term commitment from Washington. Though the franchise has been confident they'll work things out with the star receiver, recent updates suggest both sides are still far apart in discussions.

In a recent column for Fox Sports, David Helman tossed out potential landing spots for players currently holding out for new deals. While discussing Watt, the Commanders were viewed as a team that should pursue him if he's made available.
"If Washington were to trade Terry McLaurin, they'd be opening some financial wiggle room to add another lucrative player," Helman wrote. "They could get at least two, if not three, years of play out of Watt before they have to worry about extending Jayden Daniels. They definitely need the pass rush help. Watt would give Dan Quinn a blue chip player, which he doesn't really have right now, on his Commanders' defense. Adding him to a pass rush that currently includes Frankie Luvu, Dorance Armstrong, Deatrich Wise and Clelin Ferrell would upgrade the Washington pass rush from 'so-so' to outright dangerous."

Watt, a four-time All-Pro and former Defensive Player of the Year, is one of the top players in the NFL on that side of the ball. Adding a talent of his caliber would drastically raise Washington's ceiling as they attempt to contend in the NFC. Landing Watt could also help bolster the Commander's run defense, something they're trying to improve in 2025.
Seeing that he is still a high-impact player in the league, it's unlikely the Steelers move on from Watt this year. That said, it's still a situation worth monitoring for a team like Washington.

Former Penguins Forward Anthony Beauvillier Re-Signs With Capitals

The Anthony Beauvillier experiment was a success for the Pittsburgh Penguins during the 2024-25 season. They signed him to a one-year deal last July with the hopes that he would bounce back after a rough 2023-24 season, and he did exactly that, scoring 13 goals and finishing with 20 points in 63 games. He spent the rest of the season with the Washington Capitals after they acquired him at the trade deadline from the Penguins for a second-round pick. Advertisement Beauvillier had two goals and five points in 18 regular-season games with the Capitals before finishing the playoffs with two goals and six points in 10 games. The Capitals loved what they saw and signed him to a two-year, $5.5 million contract. The deal will carry an average annual value of $2.75 million. That's an excellent price for Beauvillier, who figures to slot into a middle-six role and can also play in the top six should injuries arise. The Capitals are coming off a second-round playoff exit at the hands of the Carolina Hurricanes. UFC confirms it's planning White House fight card after President Trump proposes idea

The UFC's White House card is officially in the works. A day after President Donald Trump floated the idea of hosting a UFC fight on the grounds of the White House, the promotion confirmed to NBC News that it plans to hold such an event next year. The card would be part of the government's America250 celebration of the United States' 250th birthday. Advertisement UFC CEO Dana White made his own commentary on Instagram, writing "This will be epic!!!" White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt had a similar statement on X, and reportedly said Trump was "dead serious" about the idea. The most notable volunteer among fighters was Conor McGregor, who has not competed in the UFC since 2021 but visited Trump at the White House in March, months after being found liable for rape in a case that ended a number of business relationships. The Irishman, who turns 37 this month, said "I would be honoured! Count me in!" As far as the scale of the event, Trump suggested a venue that could hold upward of 20,000 fans: "We're going to have a UFC fight, think of this, on the grounds of the White House. We have a lot of land there, we're going to build — we're not, Dana's going to do it. Dana's great, one of a kind. We're going to have a UFC fight — championship fight, full fight. Like 20, 25 thousand people. "We're going to that as part of 250, also. We're going to have some professional events, some amateur events, but the UFC fight is going to be a big deal too." The event would be the first professional sporting event hosted at the White House in U.S. history, though there have been many recreational events. The president is a frequent attendee of major UFC events, where he usually receives a warm reception from the sport's right-leaning fanbase. Advertisement White has also appeared at multiple events for Trump, such as introducing him at the 2024 Republican National Convention. Their private conversations have also come up in the past, such as when Trump said he proposed a UFC-style league just for migrants to White.

Cal Raleigh ties Ken Griffey Jr.'s Mariners record for home runs before All-Star break with 35

SEATTLE — On the spot, Cal Raleigh compiled a laundry list of players he would consider for a Mount Rushmore of Seattle Mariners following their 6-0 victory over Pittsburgh on Friday. Ichiro was one of the first names off the board, followed by the likes of stud starting pitchers Felix Hernandez and Randy Johnson. When identifying who is the face of the Mariners, though, Raleigh immediately landed on Ken Griffey Jr., who he tied for the franchise record for home runs before the All-Star break with 35 with a pair of blasts.
