Flight Forced On 8-Hour Detour After Missing Munich Airport Curfew By 10 Seconds

The passengers on Condor Flight 1513 earlier this month were mere seconds from touching down before their trip was suddenly extended by eight hours. The German airline's Airbus A321 was on final approach to Munich Airport with its landing gear down when the flight crew was denied permission to land. The flight had missed the last possible landing time after a midnight curfew by just ten seconds and was forced to land at a diversion airport 233 miles away. Admittedly, the debacle was sparked by the Condor flight running extremely late due to a prior delay with the plane, according to One Mile At A Time. Departure from Palma de Mallorca Airport in Spain was originally scheduled for 8:35 p.m. but didn't take off until 10:52 p.m., 12 minutes after its planned arrival. The flight received a 30-minute extension to allow for a 12:30 a.m. landing but fell just seconds short. Hahn Airport, 75 miles outside of Frankfurt, was the closest diversion without a curfew. Condor Flight 1513 finally landed at 1:13 a.m., where the passengers endured a lengthy deplaning process. By 3:00 a.m., they were loaded onto a bus for a 90-minute trip to Frankfurt Airport. Condor then booked the passengers on a 6:50 a.m. flight to Munich. Surprisingly, Condor was able to get the diverted flight's Airbus A321 to Munich by 5:47 a.m., over two hours before the passengers made it there. While one can attribute a portion of the blame to German aviation regulations, Condor's operations didn't help itself in this scenario. With such a tight window to complete the flight, the airline should have just cancelled the service and put the passengers up in a hotel overnight. Poor airline scheduling isn't anything new. Southwest Airlines still holds the infamous crown in that category for its complete meltdown in December 2022. The Dallas-based carrier cancelled around 16,900 flights over the holiday season. The U.S. Department of Transportation levied a record $140 million fine against Southwest in the meltdown's aftermath. The penalty was in addition to nearly $600 million in refunds and reimbursements. The nationwide incident led the Biden administration to reform airline passenger protection laws, making refunds for cancellations and severe delays automatic. Want more like this? Ryanair's challenge to Covid-19 aid for German airline Condor rejected by European court

A legal challenge by Ryanair against the European Commission's approval of Covid-19 aid granted by Germany to charter airline Condor has been dismissed by the Court of Justice of the European Union. Two loans were granted by German bank Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau and accompanied by a State guarantee in 2020 after the pandemic restrictions grounded air travel. The move was later approved by the European Commission. The loans consisted of a total nominal amount of €400 million, while the aid element amounted to €144.1 million. At the time of the first decision, the two loans amounted to a total of €550 million with the aid element was €267.1 million. Condor was part of the Thomas Cook Group, which collapsed in 2019, forcing the airline to file for insolvency. Those proceedings were extended to April 2020 when an investor lined up to rescue the airline pulled out of the deal. READ MORE Ryanair's action argued the commission failed to take into account the damage caused to Condor's business by its own insolvency when it ruled that the aid from the German state did not breach EU law. Following that action, the General Court of the European Union annulled the commission's decision to allow the aid the following year, but suspended its ruling pending a further decision by officials. The court rejected Ryanair's evidence contesting the commission's view that Germany's aid to the airline was compatible with EU law as it was meant to compensate Condor for damage caused by natural disasters and exceptional circumstances. The court said Condor was a 'sound and viable' undertaking whose difficulties were linked to those of its parent company. 'The commission could therefore expect the investors to express an interest in its purchase,' it said. [ Ryanair's O'Leary got €3.8 million pay package last year Opens in new window ] It also rejected Ryanair's argument that the European Commission failed to ensure the aid at issue compensated only the costs generated by the travel restrictions linked to the pandemic and not the costs associated with Condor's pre-existing difficulties. Similarly, Ryanair's arguments alleging the commission failed to take into consideration a potential risk of double compensation as a result of the rescue aid from which Condor previously benefited were rejected. Ryanair also failed to demonstrate that the aid at issue is discriminatory in relation to other airlines operating in Germany, in particular Ryanair itself.

EU General Court dismisses Ryanair's action on EU aid to Germany's Condor

BRUSSELS, June 25 (Reuters) - The Court of Justice of the European Union dismissed on Wednesday Ryanair's action against the European Commission's approval of COVID-19 aid granted by Germany to German charter airline Condor. "The General Court finds ... that Ryanair has not demonstrated that it is individually concerned by the Commission's decision, with the result that it cannot challenge the merits of that decision," the court said.

This action-crime series just crashed the Prime Video top 10 — and now's the perfect time to binge-watch

Sometimes shows enter Prime Video's top 10 for reasons beyond being new. For example, the 2018 spy thriller 'Condor' recently surged in popularity as it's about to leave the streaming service. Similarly, the action-crime series 'Blue Ridge' (released in 2024) is climbing the charts because season 2 recently dropped. At the time of writing, it's sitting in the No. 9 spot, just behind the recent drama 'Motorheads.' 'Blue Ridge' (the series) is actually a continuation that takes place after the events of the 2020 movie of the same name. It picks up the story of Sheriff Justin Wise as he faces new challenges in the same Appalachian setting, expanding on characters and plotlines that have already been introduced. So it's essentially moved the story forward into a serialized format. Season 2 actually premiered yesterday (June 22) on the Western Bound channel, making this the perfect time to stream the first season on Prime Video. However, if you need more context before adding it to your watchlist, here's everything to know about 'Blue Ridge.' 'Blue Ridge' follows Sheriff Justin Wise (Johnathon Schaech), a former Green Beret who takes on law enforcement in a small Appalachian town after moving there to be closer to his ex-wife, Elli (Sarah Lancaster), and daughter, Maddie (Taegen Burns). Shortly after his arrival, the local police station is mysteriously burned down, and he quickly discovers the town is riddled with crime, corruption, and violence. He works closely with his deputies, Maxx (Avianna Mynhier) and RP (Greg Perrow), to tackle those violent crimes and escalating threats. Throughout six episodes, each case pushes Justin's resolve as he strives to protect Blue Ridge and bring justice to the community. Get instant access to breaking news, the hottest reviews, great deals and helpful tips. 'Blue Ridge' is one of those background shows that's super easy to watch (or even just listen to), but it's not essential viewing, given there are so many more shows that are worth your time. This action-crime drama isn't the flashiest show out there, but that doesn't mean you should totally avoid it. It's still got a solid mix of suspense and family drama that makes it surprisingly easy to get hooked on. You don't need to have seen the 2020 movie to watch the series either. It works as a standalone story, reintroducing Sheriff Justin Wise and his world in a way that new viewers can easily follow. While the show continues from where the movie left off (with some returning characters and backstory) it doesn't rely on the movie for context. Any important details are re-established early on. At its core, 'Blue Ridge' follows a sheriff who's fresh in town, trying to clean up a community tangled in crime and corruption. What makes it appealing is its unpretentious quality, the kind of show where you really get a sense of place, thanks to the Appalachian mountain setting, and a cast of characters who feel real, with flaws and all. It's not a high-octane thriller with explosions, but it does keep the tension simmering just right, episode after episode. Season 2 is now streaming, which means there's plenty of new content if you binge the first six episodes. The mysteries and cases are mostly self-contained, making it easy to jump in without feeling lost, yet there's enough ongoing story with the sheriff's family and the local crime boss to keep things interesting. Of course, it's not perfect, and doesn't match the level of quality you'd see in a Netflix original. Some of the dialogue can lean a bit on the cliché side, and the pacing isn't lightning fast. But if you like shows with a slower burn and a fun mix of crime-solving plus personal drama, it's a good pick. So, if you enjoy small-town crime dramas with a Western vibe and don't mind a bit of predictability, I'd say the 'Blue Ridge' series is worth watching. It's a quieter kind of thrill that might just surprise you, and sometimes all you need is an easy binge-watch. Stream 'Blue Ridge: The Series' season 1 on Prime Video now. You can watch season 2 on the Western Bound channel.
