Calicut varsity V-C attends RSS affiliate's event
P. Raveendran, Vice-Chancellor (V-C), University of Calicut, on Sunday (July 6) attended an event organised by Seva Bharati, an affiliate of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, in Malappuram district. This comes against the backdrop of the tussle between Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar and Registrar K.S. Anil Kumar of the University of Kerala over the use of a 'Bharat Mata' portrait at a recent private event at the university's Senate hall. Mr. Raveendran, a former functionary of the Congress-aligned Calicut University Teachers' Association, was appointed to the post of V-C in 2024 by the then Governor Arif Mohammed Khan, apparently against the wishes of the Left Democratic Front government. On Sunday, he opened the Malappuram district delegates' conference of the Seva Bharati at Parappanangadi. He is also reported to have praised the works undertaken by the organisation. 'I get invitations to attend many social events. If time permits, I attend them. There is nothing more to it,' Mr. Raveendran told The Hindu.

KPCTA to launch stir against FYUGP ‘lapses' in Calicut varsity
The Congress-aligned Kerala Private College Teachers' Association (KPCTA) is launching an agitation against the alleged deficiencies in the implementation of the four-year undergraduate programme (FYUGP) in colleges affiliated with the University of Calicut. According to the Senate and Syndicate members of the KPCTA, the university recently revised a clause related to selection of minor (subsidiary) courses in the regulations for the FYUGP. They claimed on Wednesday that this would deprive students an option to decide the minor course of their choice. They said that the students pursuing undergraduate courses in 33 subjects, including commerce and Afzal-ul-Ulama, would be forced to pick minor courses that they may not like to study. The Senate and Syndicate members alleged that though the original clause in the regulations was more student-friendly, it was changed on the direction of the State Higher Education Council. Syndicate members T.J. Martin and P. Madhu and Senate members V.M. Chacko, Manoj Mathews, P. Sulfi, E. Sreelatha, R. Jayakumar, and G. Sunil Kumar sent letters to Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, also the Chancellor of the university, expressing their concerns. The KPCTA regional committee will organise a protest outside the academic block of the university on July 3.

Calicut varsity Senate nod for revision of FYUGP clause on minor courses
The Senate of the University of Calicut on Wednesday approved the revision of a clause in the regulations of the four-year undergraduate programme (FYUGP) related to the selection of minor courses amid opposition by members affiliated to the Congress and the Indian Union Muslim League. Vice-Chancellor P. Raveendran, who presided over the meeting held on the university campus at Tenhipalam in Malappuram district, said that a committee would be set up to address the concerns to be raised by students and colleges with respect to the revision. Clause 7.2.13 of the regulations earlier said, 'Students in major with minor pathway shall choose all the courses from two minor groups offered by a discipline other than their major discipline. In some cases, students are allowed to take both the major and minor courses offered by the same teaching department, provided that the said minor courses belong to a discipline other than the major discipline.' It was revised to 'Students in major with minor pathway shall choose all the courses from two minor groups offered by a discipline other than their major discipline.' The members aligned with the Congress-aligned Kerala Private College Teachers' Association (KPCTA) and the IUML-aligned Confederation of Kerala College Teachers (CKCT), however, objected to the revision claiming that it would deprive students the freedom to choose courses of their choice. They claimed that the students would not be able to select minor courses from the same department from where they were pursuing their major courses. The CKCT members also alleged that some pro-Left members snatched away and tore apart their dissent note. The KPCTA members staged a protest against the revision of the clause.

Higher Education dept. meddling with autonomy of Calicut varsity: KPCTA
The Congress-aligned Kerala Private College Teachers' Association (KPCTA) has accused the State Higher Education department of meddling with the autonomy of the University of Calicut. This comes in the wake of the department's recent order asking the university to revoke the implementation of the policy that allowed students to choose minor courses from the major discipline they have already selected. A release quoting KPCTA's regional committee said here on Thursday that the department was trying to interfere in the academic affairs of the university by asking it to withdraw the option. This was in violation of the various orders of the Supreme Court as well, the committee functionaries pointed out.

Cong gains majority in Manmul board, court halts VP result
Mandya: Congress gained an upper hand in the JD(S) stronghold of Mandya as its supporter Shivakumar , was elected unopposed as the president of Mandya District Co-operative Milk Producers' Union (Manmul). However, the election for the post of vice president was halted as JD(S) approached the high court. Two candidates, Krishnegowda from Congress and Raghunandan from JD(S), contested the polls. Although the election process was conducted, the result is awaited as JD(S) brought a stay from the high court. The stay was granted in response to a petition challenging Krishnegowda's election during the polls to elect the director of Manmul. As the case remains under judicial consideration, the returning officer withheld further processes, including the counting of votes. Despite the legal uncertainties, both Shivakumar and Krishnegowda will continue serving as directors until the court delivers its final verdict. In a twist to what was expected to be a straightforward victory for Congress-backed candidates, the JD(S) fielded a last-minute nomination, turning the vice president race into an unexpected contest. Initial expectations were that Congress candidates would be elected unopposed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Click Here - This Might Save You From Losing Money Expertinspector Click Here Undo Additional DC also confirmed the stay. Manmul board elections was held on Feb 2, for the 12 director posts. Of these, six were won by Congress-backed candidates, three by JD(S), and one by a BJP-supported candidate. Additionally, two JD(S) rebels—K Ravi and MB Harish from KR Pete taluk, have since pledged support to Congress, effectively raising the Congress-aligned tally to eight. Alongside the 12 elected directors, five other members hold voting rights: one nominated director (RN Vishwas from Malavalli) and representatives from the registrar of co-operative societies, Karnataka milk federation, department of animal husbandry, and the national dairy development board. These officials typically align with the ruling party, further boosting Congress' influence to a 13-member majority on the board. Mandya district minister N Cheluvarayaswamy spearheaded the Congress campaign in the region, particularly in his home constituency of Nagamangala, where Congress candidates won both director seats. On Thursday, a key strategy meeting in Bengaluru, led by district Congress committee president CD Gangadhar and Cheluvarayaswamy finalised Shivakumar and Krishnegowda as candidates for the top posts. Meanwhile, Congress supporters began celebrations following the unofficial results. The festivities were led by local MLA Ravikumar, even though the leadership change awaits formal confirmation due to the ongoing court case.
