"Wrong Perspective": Chief Minister On US' Meghalaya Travel Advisory

NDTV4 days ago

Shillong:
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Tuesday said that the travel advisory issued by the US administration linking the state and other northeastern states with terrorism and violence is wrong, asserting that he would take up the matter with the US Ambassador to India.
"The US Embassy has given a totally wrong perspective to Meghalaya and the other northeastern states. I do not believe the advisory is correct," the Chief Minister told the media.
Mr Sangma said that he would be meeting the US Ambassador to India soon and discuss the matter with facts and figures concerning the situation in Meghalaya.
The Chief Minister said that he would take up the matter with the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Ministry of External Affairs as well.
The US government had recently issued an advisory asking its citizens to reconsider visiting Meghalaya and other northeastern states due to terrorism and violence.
"Do not travel to Manipur due to the threat of violence and crime. There have been no recent reports of violence in Assam, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Sikkim, or Tripura. U.S. government employees working in India require prior approval before visiting the states of Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh, as well as when visiting any areas outside of the capital cities of Assam, Mizoram, Nagaland, Meghalaya, and Tripura," the US advisory said.
Responding to the US advisory, Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said that it is unfortunate that the US has issued such an advisory with a wrong perception.
"We don't know where they (US) collect the information about Meghalaya and the northeast region. Meghalaya is the safest place, and the hospitality of the state is well known," said Tynsong, who also holds the Home portfolio.
He said those people who have not visited Meghalaya and met the tourist-friendly people may have all sorts of misgivings and doubts.
Meghalaya Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh said the state is expected to host 20 lakh visitors this year, and the tourism department has declared a calendar of events and festivals for the entire year, including the annual Cherry Blossom Festivals.
The state government plans to invest over Rs 1,000 crore to develop the tourism-related infrastructure across the state, an official said.
According to the official, the tourism sector provides direct and indirect employment to over 50,000 people and is one of the largest job providers in Meghalaya, second only to the state government, which employs over 85,000 people.

Tripura needs stronger security due to current situation in Bangladesh: CM

Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Saturday exhorted various agencies to enhance security and surveillance in the state, given the current situation in Bangladesh. Tripura is surrounded by Bangladesh on three sides. Therefore, strengthening of security is needed, the chief minister said after inaugurating the state's first cyber police station here. "We all know the present situation in Bangladesh. There is a need to enhance security arrangements. The northeastern state has been made into a corridor for the smuggling of drugs and narcotic items. Infiltration from across the border is also another problem," he said. "There are reports that a section of people go close to the international border (Indian side) and have conversations with people living on the other side of the international border. The situation may turn ugly once AI-enabled 5G service is available," he said. Referring to the shift from conventional warfare during 'Operation Sindoor', the chief minister said cannons and the presence of forces were not seen in the conflict (With Pakistan). "Modern warfare requires a click," he said. "A mobile phone has become more dangerous than AK-47 rifles. Advanced technology has changed the form of battle, conflict or war," he said. Terming cybercrime a kind of shadow warfare, he said the security forces need to fight the criminals digitally to prevent fraudulent activities. Emphasising awareness among the people about cyber fraud activities, Saha said the security agencies are also required to upgrade their skills to foil fraudulent activities on digital platforms. The Director General of Police (DGP), Anurag Dhankar, urged the people to contact the newly inaugurated cyber police station if they encounter any incident related to cybercrime. The cyber police station is located in Agartala's AD Nagar and it will deal with all cyber-related crimes across the state. The Centre has given Rs 45 lakh out of the total outlay of Rs 5 crore. Delhi govt seeks central funds to boost road infrastructure

New Delhi: Delhi govt has decided to seek Rs 950 crore from central govt under Central Road Fund (CRF) to upgrade the city's road infrastructure. Public Works Department minister Parvesh Verma said that of the 1,400km stretches under his department's jurisdiction, nearly 415km will be taken up for strengthening under this project. Verma added that a number of these roads were lying in a state of disrepair for seven-eight years and were full of potholes and broken stretches. Despite central assistance being available for strengthening the roads, the previous govt never availed of the funds to carry out the work, he alleged. "We have decided to completely change the face of the city's roads by taking up massive road strengthening work. We have already repaired over 150km of PWD roads since we formed govt this Feb while another 100km will be completed soon. Our target is to repair at least 500km of city roads this financial year," the minister said. He added that Delhi govt was spending a lot of funds from its own coffers while central assistance had also been sought. While the money under CRF is available for new projects, officials said, the strengthening of roads can also be taken up under this scheme. PWD has prepared a long list of roads spread across its circles and divisions in the city that will be repaired and resurfaced from the central funds and sent it to the Union ministry of roads, transport and highways for its approval. Various stretches of Ring Road and Outer Ring Road, parts of Mathura Road, Mehrauli-Badarpur Road, Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road, Africa Avenue, Barapullah Road, all arterial roads in Najafgarh and various flyovers have been included in the project. The department has mentioned the length of each road, the month and the year it was last repaired and the due date of their resurfacing or strengthening in the project file. While some of these roads are long, measuring 2-5km, many are also small stretches of a few hundred metres. According to the minister, PWD will simultaneously repair footpaths and drains with the state funds. "Earlier, the contractors first used to repair the road, then another contractor would come and repair the footpath, and a third one would dig up the drain to repair it. Now we have decided to give a comprehensive tender to the contractors to repair the roads, footpaths and drains," Verma said. It will be the responsibility of the contractor to carry out the regular maintenance work for the next three-five years, till the time of their next restrengthening, he added.

Congress president Gogoi writes to Modi, flags ‘political favouritism' in Assam dairy scheme implementation

GUWAHATI: Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, raising concerns over alleged favouritism and irregularities in the implementation of a government-backed dairy scheme. In his letter, Gogoi stated that the scheme provides a subsidy of up to Rs 50 lakh for each beneficiary. 'The objective is to promote genuine entrepreneurship in the dairy sector and strengthen milk production. However, multiple reports and official documentation point to irregularities in the selection of beneficiaries,' Gogoi, also the Jorhat MP, wrote. He pointed out that several recipients of the scheme's benefits appeared to be family members or associates of ministers and MLAs, while long-standing dairy farmers were reportedly overlooked despite having applied multiple times and fulfilling eligibility requirements. He said the exclusion of experienced dairy entrepreneurs raised concerns about fairness and transparency in the selection process.
