Avondhu flawless in Duhallow demolition as they top first phase of Premier SHC Divisional/Colleges section

Cork Premier SHC (Divisional/Colleges): Avondhu 2-31 Duhallow 0-10 Avondhu's supremacy was never in doubt as they topped the first phase of the divisions and colleges section of the Co-op SuperStores Premier SHC with victory over Duhallow at Ballyhooly. While the prize — a meeting with county champions Imokilly next month — is not an entirely enticing one, the North Cork division were excellent in how they achieved it, taking control early and staying on top throughout. With Avondhu having beaten Carbery last week while Duhallow lost to Muskerry, there was an unusual knockout element in that there is no third round of fixtures in this league stage and so victory for the north-west side would have sent them through on head-to-head record. Such an eventuality never really looked likely, however. There were six wides — four for Avondhu — in the opening three minutes and, after Colin O'Brien and Luke Keating had them off the mark, a good point from wing-back Nicholas Linehan was the Duhallow response. It was as close as the teams would be all night. After Stephen Condon got the first of his ten points, Avondhu knitted together a great move as Liam Óg Hegarty, captain Liam Cronin and Johnnie Murphy linked to give Condon a goal chance. While Ben Newman saved well, Avondhu kept play alive and Paddy Walsh's pass allowed Hegarty to drill a shot to the top corner. Paddy Walsh in action for Avondhu. Picture: Larry Cummins With Eoin Carey and Joseph O'Sullivan superb as a midfield tandem and James Keating dominant at centre-back, the scores began to flow freely for Avondhu after that. Carey's pass allowed Hegarty to get his and his team's second goal on 16 minutes while Luke Keating, O'Brien and Murphy all had points during an unanswered run of 1-11. Evan Murphy did end a 15-minutes scoreless spell for Duhallow coming up to half-time, but, even so, a 2-17 to 0-4 interval lead was not in any danger of significant erosion. Duhallow's Barry O'Connor did have the opening score of the second half but Condon, Carey and Paddy Walsh stretched the Avondhu advantage. Not needed to build up scoring difference, they didn't chase too many more goals, though Hegarty was denied a hat-trick as Ben Newman saved well from him. O'Brien and Condon remained to the fore for Avondhu while subs Jack Twomey and Jamie and Jamie Sheehan also got on the scoresheet as the lead extended to 29 points near the end before a pair of frees by Duhallow's Fionn O'Connor. A bigger test awaits for Duhallow, but they go in with some measure of momentum. Strong second half showing sees Muskerry into Premier SHC Divisional/Colleges semis

Cork Premier SHC Divisional/Colleges quarter-final: Muskerry 3-16 Carbery 0-15 A strong second half display saw Muskerry advance to the Divisional/Colleges seeded section of the Co-Op SuperStores Cork Premier SHC at the expense of Carbery at Ovens on Tuesday evening. Diarmuid Kirwan's team will now meet UCC in the last four of the seeded section. There were only three points in it at half-time, with the eventual winners having their noses in front before they pushed on after the break in what was an impressive team performance in the second period. In a sluggish start, Muskerry did start positively with a goal after just 30 seconds when David Casey finished beautifully to the back of the net following a driving run. The sides traded early points in a game dominated by poor shooting. Liam Hourihane hit a great point for Carbery as they trailed by two points after eight minutes but a Shane Tarrant effort did settle Muskerry after a nervy start. A pair of Caolan O'Donovan points, one from a free, left Carbery a point adrift, but they were too reliant on him to get scores throughout. Muskerry put together three unanswered white flags with Mark O'Connell's effort the pick of the scores, 1-5 to 0-4 after 20 minutes. Carbery then scored three points on the trot of their own with O'Donovan slotting over two frees and a Shane Crowley effort. Muskerry did get the last two scores of the half through Adam Dinan and Tarrant, 1-7 to 0-7 at half-time. The Mid-Cork division were beginning to assert their dominance as they slotted over four of the first five points of the new half. Jack Devine of Muskerry and Michael O'Driscoll of Carbery do battle. Picture: Jim Coughlan O'Donovan was excellent for Carbery, very accurate from frees, as he landed another placed ball, 1-11 to 0-9 with 20 minutes remaining. Muskerry though were playing all the hurling as they were starting to show their quality. They hit two of the next three white flags before scoring two goals in the space of 50 seconds to put the game to bed. Bradley and Casey scoring the goals, with the first one eye catching after James Lane gave a great ball to the Aghabullogue marksman, 3-13 to 0-10 after 46 minutes. To Carbery's credit, they kept going right to the end as the players represented their clubs and division proudly. They landed five of the last eight points as they finished the game strongly even if the encounter had long slipped away from them. Paudie Crowley and Ciarán Dullea with two excellent scores for the West Cork outfit. It is the end of the road for them this year though as Muskerry march on. Matthew Bradley fires late winner to give Muskerry winning start in Cork Premier SHC Divisional/Colleges

Muskerry 1-23 Duhallow 2-19 It was lucky 13 for Matthew Bradley as he fired the late winner for Muskerry against Duhallow in the opening phase of the Co-op SuperStores Cork Premier SHC divisional section at Coachford on Tuesday night. After Duhallow had battled back to wipe out a four-point gap as the game ticked into injury time, Aghabullogue man Bradley replied with his 12th point of the night only for Cian Crowley to set up Brandon Murphy for another Duhallow leveller. There was still time for more, however, and when Muskerry won a free at midfield, Bradley converted to give Muskerry the points. While the mid-Cork divisional side – finalists in the divisions and colleges segment of the competition last year, losing to Imokilly – were picking from a reduced pool and had not had any time together, victory sets them up nice for the round-robin section, with a clash against Carbery next. For much of the first half, they were in control, with Bradley to the fore as they amassed an 0-8 to 0-3 lead that was augmented as Matt Brady's delivery was kept in by James Foley, who then drove goalwards along the endline before finishing well. With seven minutes left until half-time, they were up 1-10 to 0-5 but early Duhallow sub Evan Murphy pointed and then linked with Jack Murphy to set up Luke Philpott for a fine goal. By half-time, Duhallow were within three, 1-12 to 1-9, despite having had eight wides in the first half to their opponents' two, and they pushed on further on the restart. Excellent free-taking from Fionn O'Connor saw them reel Muskerry in and then push ahead, with Brandon Murphy's excellent point making it 1-15 to 1-13 on 42. While O'Connor answered a James Lane point for Muskerry, Duhallow would then endure a ten-minute scoreless spell as Muskerry settled again, with Bradley, Mark Lucey and Foley helping them to regain the upper hand. They looked safe when David Casey made it 1-21 to 1-17 in the 58th minute, but, after an O'Connor goal attempt from a free was saved, Cian Crowley's follow-up was brilliantly touched over by Muskerry goalkeeper James Walsh. Then, Rory Lynn managed to claim possession after a scramble in the Muskerry goalmouth and fired home to level. Muskerry kept their heads, however, and Bradley was on hand to be their match-winner. Scorers for Muskerry: M Bradley (0-13, 7f), J Foley (1-2), J Lane, O O'Driscoll (0-2 each), M Lucey, D Twomey, D Casey, J Devine (0-1 each). Avondhu outclass Carbery in Cork Premier SHC Divisional/Colleges opener

Avondhu 3-28 Carbery 0-20 Avondhu had too much class for Carbery as they romped to victory in the Co-Op SuperStores Cork Premier SHC Divisional/Colleges clash at Ballinlough on Tuesday evening. This opening round encounter was dominated by the North Cork outfit from start to finish. They had a very balanced team with a nice spread of scorers and a resolute defence. They have the potential to do well in this section, but stiffer tests lie ahead. Avondhu will now meet Duhallow in Round 2 while Carbery take on Muskerry. The winners set out their stall early on, showing incredible accuracy as they pushed into a 0-7 to 0-4 lead after the first quarter. Stephen Condon, Colin O'Brien and Luke Keating all influential in raising white flags. The latter extended Avondhu's advantage, but in fairness to Carbery, they were having a lot of the ball, but wayward shooting was leaving them down. Avondhu put together five unanswered points to lead 0-13 to 0-4 with nine minutes to the break. Caolan O'Donovan, Peter Collins and Conor O'Sullivan efforts did leave Carbery just six points adrift, 0-13 to 0-7. Avondhu finished the half the better though, hitting three of the last five points, 0-16 to 0-9 at half-time. The game was as good as over just a minute into the new half when Johnnie Murphy raised a green flag for the North Cork team. The game tipped along as the winners led 1-20 to 0-15 after the third quarter with the excellent O'Brien scoring some gorgeous points for Avondhu. They tacked on two more points before Carbery's best player, Caolan O'Donovan, sent over two great scores, 1-22 to 0-17 with 10 minutes to go. Avondhu dominated the closing stages in a free-flowing contest with very little bite or tackling. The North Cork men were 1-26 to 0-19 clear after 57 minutes before Murphy and Condon bagged goals in quick succession. Avondhu landed two of the last three points to run out easy winners.
