Newcastle United coach vows to 'do everything I can' to play S. Korean teen in preseason match

Newcastle United head coach Eddie Howe said Tuesday he will do "everything I can" to put the club's new South Korean signing, Park Seung-soo, into their preseason game on Park's home soil this week. Newcastle United will take on Team K League, made up of All-Stars from the top South Korean league, at 8 p.m. Wednesday at Suwon World Cup Stadium in Suwon, about 30 kilometers south of Seoul. It will be the first of two matches for Newcastle for this year's Coupang Play Series, run by the namesake local streaming service. The Magpies, the reigning English Football League Cup champions, will play UEFA Europa League winners Tottenham Hotspur, captained by South Korean superstar Son Heung-min, at 8 p.m. Sunday at Seoul World Cup Stadium Before arriving in South Korea, Newcastle announced their signing of Park. Though the 18-year-old hadn't initially been on the club's Asian traveling squad, he was on the bench for Newcastle's friendly against Arsenal in Singapore on Sunday. Wednesday's match will be at Park's old stomping ground, with his ex-K League 2 club, Suwon Samsung Bluewings, based at Suwon World Cup Stadium. Asked about his plans for Park at the prematch presser Tuesday, Howe said: "I think that I'll do everything I can to try and get him on the pitch because I think that would be important for everyone that comes to see him. So I'll certainly do my best." The coach also said it was "slightly unclear" what will happen to Park in the short term. The club had said last week he would be joining their under-21 squad. "I think we're going to have to make an assessment on where we see him fitting in the best," Howe said. "Currently, I think we've had only a very short-term impression. I think he's been very popular so far. Seems like a very good person fundamentally and new experiences for him, but I'm sure he'll do very, very well." Defender Dan Burn said he and his teammates will try to "make it as comfortable as possible" for Park as he tries to learn the new league. Howe said he will try not to overwhelm the teenager with information and added, "I think it would just be a case to go out and play his normal game." Park is the 20th South Korean player to sign with a Premier League club, and Newcastle would be ecstatic if the young forward can follow in the footsteps of Son, by far the most successful South Korean player in the top English competition. "His direct running style, his goal scoring ability ... I think he's an unbelievable player at top," Howe said of Son. "He's a player that I've always really admired, and also he tends to do everything with a smile on his face, with a really good attitude, and I really admire that in any player. So if you can take on a lot of those characteristics, you will go on to have an unbelievable career." While South Korean fans will understandably be focused on whether Park plays or not, Burn said a few of his teammates will also deserve attention Wednesday. "I think hopefully, it's a game where we can get forward players on the ball as much as possible," he said. "Anthony Elanga, from experience playing against him, is very, very quick, so keep an eye on him. Jacob Murphy scored a great goal against Arsenal. Wingers Anthon Gordon, Harvey Barnes and William Osula have done really well." Howe has brought most of his regular players, with the exception of his top scorer from last season, Alexander Isak, due to a minor thigh injury. Isak is also being linked to Liverpool, though Howe kept mum on the forward's future. "There's been no change I'm aware of," Howe said when asked if there had been any change to Isak's status over the weekend. The Coupang Play Series has brought popular European football clubs to South Korea for preseason matches each year since 2022. Manchester City, Atletico Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich and Sevilla FC have also played here. (Yonhap)

Newcastle United fans, there's a K League team you can adopt - South Korea's Magpies

English Premier League side and 2025-2026 Carabao Cup winners Newcastle United FC will travel to South Korea this summer for pre-season, where they will play Team K League and Tottenham Hotspur in the 2025 Coupang Play Series. Newcastle United's fans should know a few things about Korean football before arriving in Korea, one of which is the existence of a similar club on the outskirts of the capital region, which shares the same nickname and a similar history, Seongnam FC. Fans of Newcastle United should consider adopting Seongnam FC as an "affiliate club," and the reasons are below. Nickname "The Magpies" and Team Identity Both clubs share the same nickname, but for different reasons. Newcastle United adopted the nickname "The Magpies" due to the famous black and white stripes on their jersey, similar to the plumage of the magpie. On the other hand, Seongnam FC adopted the same nickname when they moved from Cheonan to Seongnam. The city of Seongnam is heavily linked with the bird magpie, and so, the then newly relocated Seongnam Ilhwa Chunma changed their identity, from the logo going from a Pegasus to a magpie and the jersey going from a bright yellow to a black and white striped jersey. Early Success In The Early Years Newcastle and Seongnam enjoyed some success shortly after their foundation. The English club went on to win three English first division titles and one FA Cup in the first 20 years of existence and then many more titles throughout the 1920s, 1950s, and 1960s, including two minor continental trophies. Seongnam also had a great start to life. In the first 20 years of their existence, Seongnam FC won seven K League titles (Korean first division), one Korean FA Cup, three Korean League Cups, one Super Cup, and three major continental titles, two of them being the AFC Champions League and the other one being the Asian Super Cup. The "Sleeping Giant" Newcastle United and Seongnam FC had a beautiful start to life, but both fell away somewhat. Both clubs have played second division football multiple times; Newcastle most recently in the 2016-17 season, and Seongnam has been playing in K League 2 since 2023. The South Korean magpies are struggling to come back to the K League, finishing rock bottom in K League 2 in 2024 and being in the middle of the pack so far in the 2025 season. The lack of major silverware in recent years has taken its toll on the team's reputation, but, much like Newcastle, who ended their trophy drought last season with the Carabao Cup, without a doubt, both teams have a special place in their respective countries' football history. Easy and Free Access To Seongnam FC and Korean Football Matches Newcastle's fans who really want to give it a go to this "affiliate club" idea have the possibility to watch and follow Seongnam FC matches for free and very easily with Every single match from the K League and the K League 2 is streamed for free. For any Geordies who are travelling over to South Korea, Seongnam FC are away to Bucheon FC 1995 the day before the friendly with Tottenham Hotspur. Bucheon is also located in the capital area of South Korea. More information on how to get to Bucheon from Seoul can be foundhere.

A guide to Team K League for Newcastle United fans

Team K League will return later this week to take on English Premier League side Newcastle United in the first match of the Coupang Play Series. But for any Magpies fans wondering what Team K League is, K League United has put together a comprehensive guide. How is Team K League picked? Team K League is put together through a fan vote for 11 players plus one young player, then the rest is picked by the coaching team in charge. First of all, in late June, 12 young player candidates were put up for a vote. Pohang Steelers centre back Han Hyeon-seo received the most votes with 24.6% ensuring his place in the squad. From July 4th to 13th, fans voted for who else they want to see, with the top-voted goalkeeper, top four voted defenders, three midfielders, and three forwards making it into the squad. Then the head coach of Team K League, Kim Pan-gon, who is the current manager of reigning champions Ulsan HD, along with Gwangju FC manager Lee Jung-hyo, who'll serve as his assistant, picked the remaining players to flesh out the squad. So, because of how most of the squad has been selected, Team K League is not an "all-star" team as such. What complicates things this year is the visit of FC Barcelona, who will take on FC Seoul on July 31st, then Daegu FC on August 3rd. There is only one FC Seoul player involved, and it's not Jesse Lingard. Full squad Who has Team K League played before? As 'Team K League," and not K League All-Stars as it has been in the past, Team K League has played four matches, winning one, drawing one, and losing two. The first in 2019 became a global news story on account of the Cristiano Ronaldo no-show, but the motley collection of K League stars earned a very credible and pride-boosting 3-3 draw that night. Team K League's only win came against Atletico Madrid in 2023. Team K League Results 2019, Juventus, 3-3 draw 2022, Tottenham Hotspur 6-3 loss 2023, Atletico Madrid 3-2 win 2024, Tottenham Hotspur 4-3 loss Who are the standout players from Team K League? Keep tabs on number seven, right winger, Jasir Asani, who likes to cut in from the right and shoot from outside the box. He's a full Albania international and has a good record for his country, even representing them at the Euros. Goalkeeper Jo Hyeon-woo will prove a tough nut to crack for Newcastle's forwards, while veteran attacking midfielder Cesinha is a player for the big occasion and likes to shoot from distance. Any players who've played in Europe? Team K League has a few European players who have had solid careers in their own countries and elsewhere on the continent. Right winger Jasir Asani has won the Albanian top division, the Albanian Super Cup, as well as the Macedonia league title. Darijan Bojanic has won three Swedish Cups, and Anton Kryvotsyuk has won the Azerbaijan top division title. Aside from the Europeans, attacking midfielder Lee Dong-gyeong made the move to Schalke 04 in January 2021 but only made one appearance due to injury, and went on loan to Hansa Rostock, making 12 appearances and registering one assist, before returning to K League to complete his military service. Things didn't go to plan for Lee Dong-gyeong, but he's a very talented player and, since returning to K League in 2023, has scored 22 and assisted 13 in 69 matches. Not Europe, but right back Kim Moon-hwan played 28 times for LAFC in Major League Soccer Which players are in the national team? There are a handful of players who have racked up a lot of appearances for the national team. Jo Hyeon-woo shot to fame during the 2018 World Cup for his impressive performances between the sticks, while Kim Young-gwon scored in the 2-0 win over Germany in Kazan, and against Portugal in Qatar in 2022. Jo Hyeon-woo (Ulsan) - 44 caps Lee Tae-seok (Pohang) - 7 caps Byun Jun-soo (Gwangju) - 1 cap Kim Moon-hwan (Daejeon) - 30 caps Kim Young-gwon (Ulsan) - 112 caps, 7 goals Park Jin-seop (Jeonbuk) - 8 caps, 1 goal Kim Jin-gyu (Jeonbuk) - 12 caps, 3 goals Lee Dong-gyeong (Gimcheon) - 12 caps, 2 goals Jeon Jin-woo (Jeonbuk) - 2 caps Any young players worth keeping an eye on? Technical midfielder Hwang Do-yoon, 22, is very tidy on the ball, has good vision and technique, and has broken into the FC Seoul team properly this season, becoming one of the first names on the teamsheet. He has four assists in 21 appearances this season. Pohang Steelers centre back, Han Hyeon-seo, who won the young player vote, has seen his stock rise rapidly over the last few months. Injuries and suspensions at the heart of Pohang's defense led to Han getting thrust into the first team, and he has become a regular. Who normally uses the stadiums? The match against Team K League will be played at Suwon World Cup Stadium, just south of Seoul, but still in the greater capital region. It is the home of one of K League's most successful clubs, Suwon Samsung Bluewings, although the Bluewings have fallen off their perch of late and on hard times, finding themselves in K League 2 following a shock relegation in 2023. "Big Bird," as it is commonly referred to, due to the large wing-like structure above the main stand. The South Korea women's team recently lifted the EAFF E-1 Football Championship tophy (East Asian Cup) at this stadium. The match against Tottenham Hotspur will be played at Seoul World Cup Stadium, the home of FC Seoul and the South Korean national team. As the names suggest, both were used in the 2002 World Cup. None of them hosted England matches, but Suwon World Cup Stadium hosted the Republic of Ireland's 1-1 (2-3 pens) match with Spain. It's nicknamed Big Bird due to the large wing-like structure on the roof of the main stand. No one knows what kind of bird it is, but no one has ruled out magpie... Seoul World Cup Stadium hosted three matches at the World Cup, including South Korea's 1-0 loss to Germany in the semifinals. How can I watch K League? Watch K League live, for free, and in HD Four matches per round will have English commentary. The season is heading into the business end of things, and there's lots to play for at both ends of the table with Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors looking to win a first league title since 2021 and their 10th overall, not to mention the ever-tense but nonetheless entertaining for the neutral relegation battle and promotion-relegation playoffs.

Son Heung-Min brings Europa League trophy to South Korea; K-Pop group to perform in his match in Seoul

Tottenham Hotspur and South Korea forward Son Heung-Min will bring the Europa League trophy to his home country when his club plays a pre-season match in Seoul in August. Son, who moved to Spurs a decade ago, is the highest Asian goalscorer in the Premier League and helped the side win its first major trophy in 17 years, beating Manchester United in the Europa League final. Spurs, however, has had a change in guard in management since, replacing coach Ange Postecoglou with Thomas Frank. The former Brentford manager's latest stint will begin with a pre-season in Asia. Tottenham has a friendly planned in China, South Korea, Germany and then back in the United Kingdom before starting the Premier League. In Seoul, Tottenham will play Newcastle United — Europa League winner versus EFL League Cup winner — in the Coupang Play Series at the Seoul World Cup Stadium. Both teams, which won silverware after long periods, will exhibit their trophies before the game. There's another caveat planned during this game. Popular K-Pop group 2NE1 is officially returning to the big stage. The girl band, comprising CL, Park Bom, Sandara Park, and Minzy, disbanded in 2016, and its last song, titled 'Goodbye', was released eight years ago. 'We are huge fans of Son Heung-Min. It's such an honour to be part of this event. We hope our stage gives fans an unforgettable memory,' 2NE1 said in a statement. 2NE1 will perform during the half-time show of the match, giving fans of South Korean music and football a perfect opportunity to witness both under the same roof.
