AP witnesses decline in crime rate by 10.36% in one year
Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh saw a significant decline in major crimes over the past year as the total number of cases came down from 1,11,186 between June 2023 and May 2024 to 99,675 between June 2024 and May 2025, marking a 10.36% decrease.
Property crimes like house break-ins, theft, robbery, and dacoity reduced considerably. Violent crimes, including murder, rioting, and attempt to murder, also showed a steady fall. Crimes against women, such as rape and kidnap, peaked around 2021-2022 but declined in the recent years. Economic crimes like cheating and breach of trust came down as well. The sharpest drop was observed in the 'other IPC' category, which contributed the most to the overall decline.
In what appears to be a significant shift in the law and order landscape, Andhra Pradesh recorded a steady decline in major crimes over a six-year period from June 2019 to May 2025, according to official data from the Crime and Criminal Tracking and Network System. The total number of major crimes, which stood at 1,86,386 cases in 2019-2020, dropped sharply to 99,675 cases by 2024-2025, indicating nearly a 47% overall reduction.

The consistent year-on-year dip across various crime heads paints an optimistic picture for the state's policing efforts and public safety mechanisms.
Property-related crimes, which traditionally contributed significantly to the state's crime burden, showed remarkable reductions. House break-ins by day, which numbered 744 cases in 2019-2020, fell to 747 cases in 2024-2025 after hitting a low of 522 cases in 2022-2023.
Night-time house break-ins also decreased from 2,876 cases to 2,792 cases over the same period, despite minor fluctuations. Theft, a persistent concern for both urban and rural communities, showed an overall decline but with intermittent spikes.
From 11,014 theft cases in 2023-2024, the numbers rose to 12,349 cases in 2024-2025, suggesting a need for continued vigilance despite a largely downward trend.
Dacoity and robbery cases also presented a declining trajectory.
Dacoity incidents stood at 39 cases in 2019-2020, and later rose to 62, 68, 45, and 27 in the later years. However, the number again rose to 35 in 2024-2025, while robbery cases dropped from 300 to 238 cases over the six-year span. Crimes involving bodily harm and fatal outcomes also saw a significant reduction. Murder (homicide) cases declined from 800 cases in 2019-2020 to 601 cases in 2024-2025, after it peaked in 2020-2021 (929) and 2021-2022 (923).
Attempt to murder cases, which stood at 1,485 cases in 2019-2020, fell to 933 cases in 2024-2025, reinforcing the downward trend in life-threatening offences.
Rioting cases saw an even steeper drop, from 336 incidents in 2023-2024 to 214 cases in 2024-2025. Grievous hurt and simple hurt cases also trended downward, indicating fewer incidents of severe physical assaults. Simple hurt cases, which once crossed 18,195 cases, decreased to 13,015 cases in the most recent reporting year.
Kidnapping cases rose from 889 in 2019-2020 to a peak of 1,213 in 2021-2022 before dropping steadily to 600 cases in 2024-2025.
Similarly, rape cases increased from 1,232 in 2019-2020 to 1,651 cases in 2021-2022, before decreasing to 1,219 cases in the most recent year.
White-collar crimes, including cheating and criminal breach of trust, also reduced over time. Cheating cases rose from 5,763 cases in 2023-2024 to 5,858 cases in 2024-2025.
Cases of criminal breach of trust did not observe much drop; while it was 1,097 in the past, it is 1,096 in 2024-2025. Interestingly, cases involving counterfeit currency, which were already low, continued to decrease from 48 cases to just 15 cases in six years, though it peaked in 2021-2022 with 71 cases, indicating possibly improved financial scrutiny or a shift in criminal preferences.
The most significant contribution to the overall drop in crime comes from the category labeled 'other IPC' cases.
These cases, which often encompass miscellaneous criminal activities not classified under major heads, fell drastically from 70,605 in 2023-2024 to 58,680 cases in 2024-2025. This alone accounts for a majority of the total decline observed during the reporting period.
DGP Harish Kumar Gupta said several factors contribute to this sharp decline. Enhanced community policing, installation of CCTV networks in urban and semi-urban areas, use of technology in crime detection, and the establishment of command control centres across districts may have played pivotal roles, he added.
