Chinese national Chun Lai Yuen granted bail after Caitlyn Dickson struck in high-speed crash
A Chinese national allegedly behind the wheel of a speeding vehicle which struck a teenage girl following a car cruise event has been granted bail despite police concerns he is a flight risk. Chun Lai Yuen, 25, appeared today in the Perth Magistrates Court charged with dangerous driving, after 17-year-old Caitlyn Dickson sustained serious injuries at a car meet on Monday night. Police allege Mr Yuen was driving a black Honda Civic at more than 90 kilometres per hour on Camfield Drive near Crown Casino when it struck Ms Dickson. Police prosecutor Sgt Simon Chan opposed bail, saying Mr Yuen was on a temporary student visa and did not have a stable base in Perth. Magistrate Elizabeth Langdon granted bail with a $20,000 surety, and conditions including Mr Yuen not drive a motor vehicle. He is due back in court on August 15.

To improve your experience update it here A 17-year-old girl is in the "fight of her life" in hospital after she was hit by an allegedly speeding car during a cruise meet in inner-city Perth , sparking criticism by car enthusiasts of "hooning". Caitlyn Dickson was leaving an organised car meet near Crown Casino in Burswood when she was hit last night and rushed to hospital, where she remains in a serious condition. (9News) Caitlyn's parents, Paul and Bec Dickson, tonight said they were still in shock. "We are so very grateful to the first responders," they said, in a statement. "It is a miracle that our beautiful girl is still alive – thanks to your efforts. "Caitlyn is a fighter and we know is in for the fight of her life." Caitlyn was on foot when she was hit by a Honda Civic on Camfield Drive about 9.55pm (11.55pm AEST) yesterday. She suffered internal bleeding and broken bones and was rushed to Royal Perth Hospital in a critical condition. The impact shattered the car's windscreen but the driver was uninjured. Police weren't on site at the time but had been there earlier in the night. An Ascot man has been charged with dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm, in circumstances of aggravation. It's alleged he was speeding when he hit the teen pedestrian. Car enthusiasts say anti-social behaviour is becoming more common at meets like this and they've had enough, some now fearing for their safety and choosing to stay away. "You want to be able to go out and have a good night out with your mates and not have to look over your shoulder in fear," witness Michael Wood said. "We know the reason why these events are so popular amongst young people is because they film it, they post it online, they make it popular, which continues to drive that risky behaviour," he said. Locals say it's another reason the Burswood race track shouldn't go ahead. "This is going to impact and escalate the hooning that's already happening on Canfield drive with the race track happening," Save Burswood Park co-convenor Robin Harvey said. The Honourable Julie Bishop has revealed what it's like to be a "big-time parliament powerhouse" in a new interview with close friend Tyra Banks. The 68-year-old Australian politician, who was the first female Minister for Foreign Affairs from 2013 to 2018 and the first female deputy leader of the Liberal Party from 2007 to 2018, sat down for an interview with the American supermodel on Sunday. It's understood that the pair became fast friends after Banks moved to Australia with her family, including her nine-year-old son, York, and partner, Louis Bélanger-Martin, in late 2023. The unlikely duo were recently spotted dining together at Nobu in Sydney's Crown Casino, sharing happy snaps from the outing on social media. "I have a confession," the former America's Next Top Model judge told Bishop during the interview for The Daily Telegraph. "I kept forgetting you were this big-time parliament powerhouse because you were just so warm, inviting, lovely … and FUN! "It felt like girlfriends catching up – not a government icon and a retired-but-not-really-retired-now supermodel-turned-businesswoman. Ha!" When Banks asked Bishop what the most unexpected thing was in her handbag, the former MP offered a peek into her current work as the United Nations' Special Envoy to Myanmar. "My United Nations ID and the business cards of some very interesting people!" she revealed. Reflecting on her 21-year political career, the Perth-based former politician, who was MP for Curtin from 1998 to 2019, also served as Minister for Education, Science and Training, Minister for Women's Issues and Minister for Ageing. Banks asked her to recall the most unexpected "Julie Bishop flex" she'd ever pulled in a room full of "men in suits". "Sitting around a table with all men to discuss a proposal and trying unsuccessfully to get a word in," Bishop replied. "So waiting until they all agree with each other and are about to move on, then putting my hand up to say, 'There's a fundamental flaw in this. We'll need to start from the beginning, and here's why'." When asked about a time she nearly lost composure in Parliament from laughing, Bishop recounted being caught on live TV playing "rock-paper-scissors-lizard-Spock" with former Cabinet Minister Christopher Pyne while waiting for Question Time. "We then received a text from staff saying, 'You're on TV – stop it!'" she said. Banks, who recently launched her SMiZE & DREAM ice cream brand with a flagship store in Sydney's Darling Harbour, ended the chat by making plans with Bishop for their next girls' getaway. "I bonded with you in such a beautiful way when we had that first dinner at Nobu at the Crown. What should we do on our next girls' hangout?" she asked. Bishop replied: "I love that we connected so easily with lots to talk about, so I can't wait for our trip to Margaret River to explore the wine region and just hang out for a few relaxing days."

Casino giant slapped down in latest push to install pokies as machine profits hit all-time high of $8 billion
Australia's largest casino group will not be permitted to run pokies as fallout continues from a damning report into a major poker machine regulator. NSW Premier Chris Minns on Friday ruled out legislation to allow Crown's Sydney casino to install poker machines. It followed reports the gaming giant was lobbying MPs to overcome the legal obstacle as their licence does not permit pokies. 'This is a legislative imposition that's been put in place in the state for over a decade,' the premier said. 'It would require a bill, presumably, from the government, to knock over that restriction, and I'm not going to do it.' The government did not indicate its position if a non-government MP tried to move legislation supporting Crown's position. But there is no suggestion any MP would make that move. Independent Sydney MP Alex Greenwich said allowing pokies in Crown's waterfront casino at Barangaroo would betray the community's agreement to give away public land for a restricted gaming facility without poker machines. Gaming tables at the towering complex opened a year late in 2022 after an inquiry found Crown was not fit to operate a casino, forcing it into three years of remediation. 'With gambling harm on the rise, we need less venues with large poker machine floors, not new ones right on the harbour,' Greenwich said. He referenced a NSW auditor-general report released on Thursday that found regulators were failing in harm-minimisation efforts. The report also found licence conditions were not being pro-actively reviewed and little was done to force pokie venues to take meaningful actions when problem gambling was noticed. Poker machine numbers have increased under the state Labor government, with NSW having half of all Australian pokies in 2022/23. Profits from the machines hit all-time highs of $8.4 billion in the 2023/24 financial year. That delivered $2.3 billion in tax revenue, a figure tipped to hit $2.9 billion by 2027/28. Gambling reform advocates found the report unsurprising and lamented government inaction in the reform space. An independent panel in 2024 recommended mandatory cashless gaming be introduced state-wide, but the government has not followed through. 'This inaction privileges the special pleading of a harmful and predatory industry over and above the health and wellbeing of the people of NSW,' Wesley Mission chief executive Reverend Stu Cameron said.

Wayne Carey caught in explosive late-night physical altercation
North Melbourne legend Wayne Carey has been filmed in a heated altercation with a man he described as an 'antagonist' outside a Melbourne pub. The 54-year-old was captured tussling with one man while another, who appears to be Carey's friend, tries to diffuse the situation, in a physical exchange that spilled out onto the streets surrounding Albert Park Hotel on Thursday night. In the video, the champion AFL goalkicker and ex-commentator can be seen grabbing at the man's shirt before another man yells out, 'Wayne, Wayne, relax'. The struggle continues as the man attempting to keep peace then speaks to the third man directly, telling him to 'f*** off' and to 'shut the f*** up and go'. A female voice is then heard yelling from somewhere across the road, saying, 'Guys, walk away, people live here. Keep walking. Move it on'. It's the latest in a string of controversies littered throughout Carey's life since his playing days. In 2022, Carey was cleared of any wrongdoing after having a bag of white powder spill out of his pocket at Crown Casino in Perth. He insisted the bag contained crushed-up anti-inflammatory medication. His most infamous controversy was the extramarital affair he had with Kelli Stevens, the wife of former teammate Anthony Stevens, in 2002. Carey and Anthony Stevens have had a long-running feud in the 23 years since, but are set to be reunited at the Kangaroos' 100-year celebration later this year. Carey, Stevens and North great Glenn Archer will all be present for the Round 20 clash against the Western Bulldogs, which takes place in prime time on Thursday night. The trio will show a united front, nearly 25 years since Carey's messy exit from the club. It comes just six months after the club unveiled a video celebration of the centenary year that interestingly excluded Carey. Former teammate Corey McKernan was vocal at the time, but Carey and other North Melbourne greats, including Stevens and Archer will all be present for the special night. Channel 7's Caroline Wilson revealed the exclusive details of Carey's return on 7NEWS Melbourne and The Agenda Setters last month. 'All three men (Carey, Stevens, Archer) are well aware that they will be there together and united for the first time,' Wilson said 'There was speculation last year when North unveiled their centenary jumper. And if you remember, there were North champions from through the eras and there was no Wayne Carey, and Corey McKernan was very upset about this. 'In 2022, a year later, they had a 25-year premiership reunion for the '96 flag, and there was an altercation at a pub between Anthony Stevens and Wayne Carey. We know the history there. 'They had to be separated. I don't think it was physical, but it was not nice. 'And when there was a motorcade the next day at Marvel Stadium, Anthony Stevens wasn't there and Wayne Carey was. 'So the club has worked really hard to get all these guys within the fold. And clearly you can't celebrate your 100th anniversary without Wayne Carey being there.'
