‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners' Season 2 Announced at Anime Expo 2025 With New Director, New Storyline, and a Whole Lot More Blood

Night City is calling once again. During Anime Expo 2025, Netflix and CD Projekt Red officially announced Cyberpunk: Edgerunners Season 2 — a brand-new installment of the acclaimed anime series set in the world of Cyberpunk 2077. Revealed during the 'Cyberpunk: Edgerunners — Behind the Scenes With its Creators' panel, the new season will feature 'an entirely new story, fresh characters, and a raw, realistic take on the most dangerous city of the dark future.' Bartosz Sztybor, story writer and producer of the original series, confirmed the news alongside voice actors Emi Lo (Lucy Kushinada) and Zach Aguilar (David Martinez), host Joey 'The Anime Man' Bizinger, and Edgerunners director Hiroyuki Imaishi. During the panel, fans were treated to exclusive reveals of the official Season 2 logo and poster artwork, according to The Verge. 'David's story might be over, but there's plenty more to discover in Night City,' Sztybor said. 'And to again have the legendary animation studio TRIGGER along for the ride makes us at CD PROJEKT RED so excited to introduce a raw, real chronicle of redemption and revenge, something unlike what we've done before.' Taking the reins this season is Kai Ikarashi, who directed Season 1's standout episode 'Girl on Fire.' Ikarashi was formally introduced as the new director in a video message shown during the panel, where he also debuted a 'Director's Voice' video, offering a glimpse into his creative vision for the next chapter. The new 10-episode standalone story is being described as 'sadder,' 'darker,' and 'more bloody,' according to Sztybor, who didn't hold back during the Trigger Studio panel: 'I just wanted to make the whole world sad… when people are sad, I'm a bit happy.' He added, 'It will be also darker, more bloody, and more raw.' A synopsis teases what's to come: Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 presents a new standalone 10-episode story from the world of Cyberpunk 2077 — a raw chronicle of redemption and revenge. In a city that thrives in the spotlight of violence, one question remains: when the world is blinded by spectacle, what extremes do you have to go to make your story matter? Ikarashi will be joined by returning Edgerunners collaborators Kanno Ichigo (Promare, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners) as lead character designer and Masahiko Otsuka (Gurren Lagann, Promare), who will handle the screenplay adaptation. While there's no premiere date just yet, fans lucky enough to attend the Peacock Theater panel later that night were treated to a closed-door viewing of new teaser footage, which you can peep here. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is currently in production, with a future release planned for Netflix. More updates will be shared via the official website, newsletter, and CD Projekt Red's social channels on X, Facebook, and Instagram.

Hell Yeah, ‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners II' is Happening

After repeated teases over the past year, Studio Trigger revealed it's making a sequel to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, its hit 2022 anime based on Cyberpunk 2077. At the show's AnimeExpo panel on Friday, returning showrunner Bartoz Sztybor and season one voice actors Zac Aguilar (David Martinez) and Emi Lo (Lucy Kushinada) revealed the new season with a tantalizing poster made by Trigger character designer Ichigo Kanno. The new series is said to be standalone—sorry, season one fans, Sztybor and the trailer itself very much confirm original Edgerunners protagonist David is still dead—and will provide 'a raw chronicle of redemption and revenge' across its 10-episode run. The logline for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners II asks, 'When the world is blinded by spectacle, what extremes do you have to go to make your story matter?' The original centered on David's transformation into an Edgerunner after surviving a drive-by shooting and gets a powerful spinal implant. Along with critical acclaim for its writing and animation, it's been remembered for its pretty brutal ending, which left David and nearly every other main character dead by the end of their adventure. But if you thought that was bad, Sztybor teased things would get even worse for this new set of characters. 'I just wanted to make the whole world sad,' he said during Friday's panel. 'When people are sad, I'm a bit happy. This new season will be, of course, sadder, but it will be also darker, more bloody, and more raw.' Edgerunners II will be directed by Kai Ikarashi, who helmed the original's sixth episode 'Girl on Fire' and previously worked on Delicious in Dungeon and Mob Psycho 100. No word on when Cyberpunk: Edgerunners II will arrive, but luckily, there's some stuff to tide you over. There's a manga prequel all about supporting character Rebecca, and the show's co-protagonist Lucy joins Guilty Gear Strive later this summer. And if you've been holding out for a Blu-Ray for season one, it's coming October 28, with pre-orders opening August 26. 💥Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 is in production! 💥 It presents a new standalone 10-episode story from the world of Cyberpunk 2077— a raw chronicle of redemption and revenge. ❓When the world is blinded by spectacle, what extremes do you have to go to make your story matter? 👀… — Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (@edgerunners) July 4, 2025Want more io9 news? CD Projekt Red Announces ‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2' at Anime Expo

CD Projekt Red is returning to the Cyberpunk: Edgerunners universe with a new stand-alone entry, which the game developer announced alongside the anime series' showrunner during a panel at Anime Expo on Friday. The video game developer will once again partner with the animation studio Trigger for Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, which, like its predecessor, will stream on Netflix. An official logo and poster art were shared as part of CD PROJEKT RED's 'Cyberpunk: Edgerunners — Behind the Scenes With its Creators,' with a promise that later in the day, Trigger would tease new footage for the series at the Peacock Theater as part of its own panel. More from The Hollywood Reporter Netflix Is Shark-Attacking Discovery and Nat Geo This Summer The Front Man Speaks: 'Squid Game' Star Lee Byung-hun Unpacks His Character's Mysterious Inner Thoughts 'The Residence' Was Mostly Good, But It Didn't Quite Earn a Second Season The series will serve as a new 10-episode stand-alone story set in the world of Cyberpunk 2077, and asks the question: in a city that thrives in the spotlight of violence and when the world is blinded by spectacle, what extremes will you go to in order to make your story matter? Described as a raw chronicle of redemption and revenge, Edgerunners 2 will, according to the series' story writer and producer Bartosz Sztybor, not only be a sadder and darker take, but 'more bloody, and more raw.' 'Night City has a lot of stories to tell. I have a dream that it won't end with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. There's more stories, more characters,' he added about his decision to pursue another series. 'I wasn't satisfied with the sadness I received from the audience so I want you to be even more sad now.' Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 will feature a new story and fresh characters, and while the series does not currently have a release date, it will be directed by Kai Ikarashi. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners director Hiroyuki Imaishi made a special appearance during the panel to pass the baton for Ikarashi's directorial debut on the series, after working together on the 2022 entry. Voice actors Emi Lo (Lucy Kushinada) and Zach Aguilar (David Martinez) also appeared on the panel, which saw cast and creatives take fans behind the scenes of the 2022 anime. Sztybor and Ikarashi will be joined on Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2 by lead character designer Kanno Ichigo and Masahiko Otsuka, who will be responsible for the screenplay adaptation. '[Cyberpunk: Edgerunner's] David [Martinez's] story might be over, but there's plenty more to discover in Night City. And to again have the legendary animation studio Trigger along for the ride makes us at CD Projekt Red so excited to introduce a raw, real chronicle of redemption and revenge, something unlike what we've done before,' Sztybor said in a statement. The Last of Us is over. Here are 5 more movies and TV shows to watch based on video games

HBO's hit adaptation of The Last of Us has finally reached the end of its second season, meaning that fans of the show will likely try to fill the void as they wait for season 3. Some may be looking to watch other top-tier adaptations of their favorite video games, which might be a challenge. For many years before The Last of Us, the film and television industries have struggled to develop high-quality adaptations of beloved video games. However, in recent years, there has been a growing number of film and TV adaptations like The Last of Us that respect and even build upon the source material. While the world holds its breath for The Last of Us season 3, here's a guide to five must-see movies and TV shows based on video games. Recommended Videos Need more recommendations? Then check out the best new shows to stream this week, as well as the best shows on Netflix, the best shows on Hulu, the best shows on Amazon Prime Video, the best shows on Max, and the best shows on Disney+. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners (2022) While Cyberpunk 2077 garnered controversy upon its release, one of the most notable outcomes was the creation of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners. The animated series follows David, a gifted teenager from Night City who resorts to a life of crime with the aid of cybernetic implants to make ends meet after his mother's death. Though David and his friends dream of making it big and escaping from their bleak lives in Night City, this thrilling sci-fi series depicts the harsh and timely realities of their world that they struggle to break free from, including violent gangs, sinister corporations, and addictive technology. Stream Cyberpunk: Edgerunners on Netflix. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (2024) Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is far more kid-friendly than The Last of Us (which should be refreshing to some viewers). However, the third movie is much darker than the previous Sonic films thanks to Shadow the Hedgehog, a character exceptionally voiced by Keanu Reeves. Much like Ellie, Shadow's life is marked by loss, grief, and a desire for revenge, and his conflict with Sonic brings out the darkness in the Blue Blur himself. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 leaves plenty of room for lighthearted humor in its tale of revenge, especially with Jim Carrey playing two Doctor Robotniks. It also features some spectacular anime-style action carried out by its superpowered hedgehogs, making it the most faithful and thrilling Sonic film yet. Stream Sonic the Hedgehog 3 on Paramount+. Castlevania (2017-2021) Long before The Last of Us hit HBO, Netflix showed how video game adaptations could be taken seriously with Castlevania. This animated hit depicts the hellish war between humans and vampires unleashed by Dracula (Graham McTavish) after his human wife is burned at the stake. Similar to The Last of Us, Castlevania portrays characters searching for meaning and happiness in a bleak world while battling monsters, both human and undead. Such a dark and bold series delves into heavy issues of religious oppression, grief, and depression, all while delivering some of the most compelling characters ever seen in a video game adaptation. On top of that, the action is thrilling, the animation is breathtaking, and the voice acting is music to the ears. Stream Castlevania on Netflix. Arcane (2021-2024) Based on League of Legends, Arcane is a mature animated series centered around sisters Vi (Hailee Steinfeld) and Jinx (Ella Purnell), who ultimately turn on each other while caught up in the violent war between two cities. Both Arcane and The Last of Us explore the cycle of violence that unfolds in a world seemingly determined to destroy itself, while also telling a story about finding love in the unlikeliest of places. Also, with incredible voice acting and animation on par with the Spider-Verse films, Arcane delivered a dazzling and immersive video game adaptation in a league of its own. Stream Arcane on Netflix. Fallout (2024-present) Prime Video's Fallout follows Lucy (Ella Purnell), who, after living in an underground bunker her whole life, ventures out into the radioactive wasteland to rescue her father from raiders. Like The Last of Us, this vast and dense series takes place in a post-apocalyptic version of America filled with monsters, albeit one created by a nuclear war. The show's characters face several horrors and dark truths about the world they once knew and the people they love. However, Fallout takes a more comedic approach to its dark, sprawling story. As the naive Lucy and her allies face a world plagued by vicious marauders, horrific 'ghouls,' and evil corporations, the upbeat fantasy fed to her and the other Vault dwellers burns away in a haunting satire of American society at the height of the Atomic Age. This all makes for a bold, thrilling, but enjoyable dystopian drama that does justice to its acclaimed source material. Stream Fallout on Prime Video.
